I'm always keeping my eye out for the controller that was used for Whac-a-Critter (aka Mallet Legend), and found an interesting description on Amazon. "Designed for years of bashing and thrashing, the Smash Controller is incredibly intense with Realtec's Whac-A-Critter and Video Simon." I can't find anything on this Video Simon. Considering there is nothing on SEGA Retro I'm assuming it's unreleased. Did a prototype ever exist though?
First time I've heard of it, and this is probably something unreleased. The only Realtec releases I know of are Whac-a-Critter/Mallet Legend, Earth Defense, Funny World & Balloon Boy, a Taiwan-only Chinese Chess game, and a cheat device called the Genipak. Maybe someone here would know; I can bring up the discussion myself if you'd like.
I'll register over there and ask them sometime over the weekend. Heading back home for the holidays, after I get off work today. Thanks for the tip though!
I still haven't gone to that forum, but I can actually confirm that the game was at least suppose to be made. A buddy of mine came across a lot of new old stock for these controllers and naturally we bought them all! There it is on the back it mentions this controller is for Whac a Critter and Video Simon. If anyone is curious about anything else with the controller since it's considered to be fairly difficult to find, let me know.
WOAH SHIT WHAT Could you provide scans and pics of the thing or donate one to the MD research community? That would be very much appreciated! Thanks! Did your friend just find the controllers, or was there any other stuff? Though I can already guess from looking at the Whac-a-Critter game code that the controllers are probably just an IC chip (PIC?) that produce 3-button compatible controller output...
I will provide as much stuff as I can once we get them all. We're getting 8 total, (only 2 arrived today another box with 6 is coming tomorrow) and I'll see what he wants to do since he found them, and purchased them. I'm just buying 2 at the price of the total cost divided up. Looking at one it's just phillips screws holding it together so I can do a tear-down and take pics sometime tomorrow possibly. I'm leaving town tomorrow night till the 26th so I'm trying to get x-mas stuff in order... This is all we found just happened to come across a seller that had them, and we got lucky!
