I've done a bit of research and searching around in Ristar for music data, and finally I got a legitimate hit. After this, I searched for a pointer set, and found that as well. The music pointers are located at offset $C852A. Anyway, after looking at it a bit, I found out that the Ristar music engine is the Sonic 1 music engine! It handles voices the same way, and all the coordination flags are the same. Because of this, music is fully editable in Ristar and I will be promptly forcing fuzzbuzz to add Ristar support to SOME!

This makes me think now... Ristar and Sonic are obviously closely connected in some way, which might explain it's appearance in Sonic Mega Collection. What do you guys think?

Note: The music header format is slightly different, so it is giving me problems porting Ristar music to Sonic 1. Give it time and you can have the best music evar in Sonic 1. Yay! ^_^

I think that now you need to prod the music in every game in SMC+. =P.
    Nice work, really interesting too.

I guess this points again to the possibility of Sonic and Ristar being programmed based on the same preliminary engine... Does anybody know if the mappings work the same way in both games as well?

The engine is not the same, or even close. Different programmers. Different ways of handling data and scrolling.

Why can't ICEknight ask the art director of Sonic 2 about the art compression name? I say that's the only thing that's shared between Ristar and Sonic and other Sega of Japan productions.

    Praise the lord!

I've always wanted to do a hack of Ristar, but I never had the time.

I rank Knuckles Chaotix above Ristar... So you know how low I rank Ristar. And I rank Sonic Spinball above Knuckles Chaotix... So you know it's very low already!

Knuckles Chaotix - Ristar - Sonic Advance 3 - Windows XP = too playhouse colorful for my eyes!

    Yea Spinball owns.

I'm not really complaining about the number of colors. What I mean is it is using a bad combination of colors in the palette that makes it look okay, but too playhouse... And a little bit gay (applies to Sonic Advance 3)

Sad. Once again, you completely ignore the gameplay and expect beautiful eye candy to satisfy you. I pray that you will eventually stop thinking this way.

The art in Ristar was actually quite well done. I've looked at it, and it's pure quality. It's just not done in the same style as the art in Sonic games.

Bad colors means bad game (or OS)? I'm sorry you feel that way.

In any case, Ristar certainly looks a lot like Chaotix. It's obviously what the art was inspired from.

EDIT: The connection? It's basically what SOnic was originally intended to be if not for the fact that such mechanics would have made the game move slower.

IIRC, one of the ideas for a SEGA mascot before they thought of Sonic was a rabbit with stretchable ears. And that Ristar prototype looks kinda like a rabbit, but it stretches its arms instead. Does anyone think that SEGA could have re-used the rabbit idea?

Nothing that concerns this place in the least.
I've also noticed that Ristar has some of the same sound-effects as the ones in Sonic the Hedgehog 3/Sonic & Knuckles. During the final battle with Greedy, once Ristar enters the stage, it makes the same sound-effect as the elevators in the Death Egg. When Greedy first opens the portal, it makes the sound-effect from when Sonic is turning into Super/Hyper Sonic.

Planet Freon also is kinda like ICZ in a way. Freon is the 5th level, IceCap is the fifth level, Freon is an ice level, IceCap is an ice level, Freon has Ristar going down a mountain at the beginning, IceCap has Sonic going down a mountain at the beginning.

Actually, that snowboarding section's only in the US / EU version of Ristar; it's interesting to note, though, that Ristar's snowboarding sprites are also present in the Japanese ROM, despite never being used...

That "hey" voice played in some of the BGM made an appearance in SCD J in SSZ also. (TOO MANY ACRONYMS!!!)

EDIT: Furthermore, it seems that the sound for deleting a letter in the password area gives the sound of a mess up in "bop-it".

I have asked Rhonda Van about that and she says it is not cos ristar is based on sonic. its cos there is a basic sound libary developers got.
and jesus just cos ristar grabs things and his original design had 2points and red and white shoes etc does not mean he is related to the bunny idea! I would add it to my site but untill get more info on feel I am not gonna add it to the site. I might make a theories page one day..

Oh I have done a bit of image tile/text research in ristar and found some odd things.
Check the backup site http://ristar.chaosx.org/ (ristar-cluster.com is down due to hosting issues) and look in research/ the news for the unbuttoned section in the classic Test, Tiles and Oddities page.
