October 1987, just one or two months after Mastertronic released the SMS in the UK, and predating the 1988 date currently cited in the wiki. And from the beginning of the SMS in the UK, to the end (along with Game Gear, Mega CD, and 32X). This news is also documented online here (dated 16 April 1996).
1996, and the website's still up? That must be rivaling the Space Jam website for Internet longevity.

S: The Sega Magazine Issue 10 (September 1990) PDF Images Note; S was quite a bit wider than A4 size, so I had to crop the side of these. Fortunately most pages had a very wide border with no content so not much was lost except for on the the cover and a couple of other pages.
