Yeah, but is that a good reason? Sure, it was popular. But who looked at it and went: "that's a good fit for a Sonic game"? It's such a pace breaker. If the combat was at least fun... But no. It's repetitive and slow as all hell. Even the look of the stages. There's only so much you can do with nightesque environments before it starts to overstate its welcome. "Oh, but SA1 had fishing!" Yeah and that sucks. But it's probably less than 5% of the game and you can choose to avoid big for as much as you want. You're not forced to switch between the fun and the boring every 15 minutes...
We're just coming off Sonic BotW because the industry is still suffering from the damage that BotW has caused. You don't need a good reason when you're chasing money.
Here's another hot(ish) take: Martin Burke is the best Sonic voice of all time, and Ryan Drummond is extremely overrated.
I love Martin for the same reasons I like Jason. Nostalgia. How weird and goofy the tones are (in an endearing way.) And it’s distinct energy.
Pretty based tbh. I always found Martin's Sonic voice really endearing, I think he sounds pretty cool in his own way. The OVA has so many great lines that I permanently associate with Martin's voice, but I guess it might sound weird to someone who doesn't have any nostalgia for it, though. God, I'm just now remembering how much I loved the OVA as a little kid, I would rewatch low resolution Youtube uploads of the dub all the time when I was like 8 because I thought it was the coolest thing ever... I wonder how many kids today are experiencing the exact same thing I did with it? I'm getting off track, aha.
Yeah im definitely on the other side of that coin, i definitely do not like Martin's sonic. It probably doesn't help that I discovered the OVA in my teens rather than as a younger kid, but Martins voice was always INCREDIBLY grating for me. Some of those lines are great, or at least very memorable, but frankly I find his voice borderline insufferable
I can't agree with the second statement, but I respect the first. Martin Burke was good. Sonic's Japanese voice in the OVA (can't remember his name) is still one of my favorites, alongside Kanemaru and Drummond. The new guy in Sonic Prime sounds really good so far.
When I think of the character of Dr. Eggman, I always compare him to that of Dr. Wily of the Mega Man franchise (besides the obvious) As a character, Dr. Wily is egotistical and incredibly narcissistic, only doing things for his own benefit. The Mega Man series is compromised into multiple series forming a timeline, meaning nothing in say the Mega Man Classic series can change the course of events in the Mega Man X series. In Mega Man X, the world is overrun with a computer virus that turns robots rouge, and we learn that this was a last-ditch attempt at taking over the world by Dr. Wily before his death. What I'm trying to say is, even though the Mega Man games like to tease with a sympathetic Dr. Wily, he is destined to never turn over a new leaf. He's made to be maniacal, unforgiving. That's just who he is, and who he was since the beginning. Going back to Dr. Eggman, someone who is sentimental towards life or sympathetic about other's well being doesn't just commit for over 30 years of this franchise existing to things like unleashing a virus that makes people lose their sense of self just to have them be subservient to him, or destroy the world just to have control over it, just to go "oops, didn't mean for that to happen, how cruel of me " or the sort. Now I feel embarrassed for replying to an old post, I just wanted to get my thoughts out.
Ngl, the only time I have truly understood the appeal everyone says Eggman has was in the movie. People always talk about how he can go from entertaining in a comedic way to genuinely threatening the next second. Well… The only other time he has felt threatening to me is some scenes in SA2 and IDW. I don’t generally find him amusing at all. And the movie accomplishes both. And even there he is only mildly amusing. Though I haven’t bothered to watch the sequal yet. EDIT: I feel like I have already said this before. On this very thread, actually. Can we trash this please?
Now that you've brought up the movies, i have to say that the movies are probably my favorite depictions of Eggman that treat him with more of a character, and that's thanks to Jim Carrey's surprisingly thoughtful interpretation of him. I recommend watching this Youtube video on Carrey's Eggman (which compares him to Elon Musk) by Maggie Maefish. What i like the most about Eggman in these movies is how his relation with the world around him is depicted. He has die hard fans who just love to see him do shit, he has the government basically just allowing to do what he does. We can recognize Eggman's actions as bad and villainous and just to fuel his own giant ego, but also the world around him allows it, it's why he does the things he does, the world wants him and allows him to do awful acts, and that fuels his ego, in a warped way, the things he does can be viewed as good and required service to the world around him, have him be this megalomaniac, while the world around him praises him. There are elements of these in the games already, Eggman is responsible for amusement parks, casinos and military equipment used or copied by other military groups, he has a presence all around the world. All you have to do is have more emphasis on them, what if we did see people going into the park in Sonic colors and having a great time, while completely oblivious to the cruelty the aliens face and etc. . Have Eggman's villainy be much more evasive to the world, to his followers, and to himself. Spoiler That way we can have Sage still be a sympathetic figure, but also someone who just can't see her father's wrong doings for what they are. I don't know how people would think of this idea, or even if the franchise has a place for this kind villain and themes, but i like it, and would like to give it a try.
Well since we're on the subject; Ian Flynn basically said Sage would cause Eggman to act even worse as a villain as he would destroy anything that made her upset.
One day, Elon Musk is going to follow his dad's message of 'being born to breed' (or whatever nonsense he said) and make a shitty joke about his eggs and sausage down there. 80% chance he'll adopt Eggman as his new nickname. Where the fuck is our blue walking hedgehog?
