After beating Sonic Unleahsed HD I've come to believe that IGN's score for the game and criticisms were all completely justified.

I loved the HD Daytime levels and think they're some of the best in the entire franchise. Eggmanland HD is probably my favorite Sonic final level ever as it really made you use everything you learned.

I liked the Hubworlds. I liked the different people you could interact with. I liked the shops.

But there was a lot more I straight up didn't like.

Werehog wasn't fun for me. I didn't come for this type of gameplay. If I wanted to play this style of game I'd play God of War or Devil May Cry.

I also didn't like medal collecting. Especially when the Daytimes controls are NOT made for going back and some are hidden in very weird locations you will definitely miss your first time.

Medal collecting and Werehog levels frustrated me so much that they ruined the entire game for me. It took me a week to beat it because I hated going through them so much.

I hated how long they were, I hated how I was forced to learn and engage in this gameplay style I wasn't here for, and I hated how I had to collect medals to sometimes UNLOCK these werehog levels I didn't even like!

If someone felt they ruined the game SO MUCH for them that it was a 4.5/10 because the werehog and medal collecting weren't just minor inconveniences but pace breaking and frustrating then it's a justified score.

I'd even say I'd give it around a 4.5-5.9 as well. Glad I got that off my chest.

Does that include the one where they deliberately jumped over a ramp and claimed it was a glitch?

I'm going to assume you're an adult and smart enough to realize that I was talking about their criticisms towards the wrehog levels and progression systems and have no clue why you thought this little "gotcha" would somehow discredit their criticisms towards the game or mine either but I won't bother actually responding to this the way you wanted.

Then just... don't do it? I don't think you're forced to.

Did you forget they were progression gated forcing you to collect a certain amount in order to progress, with a particularly big spike occurring right towards the end of the game in Adabat?

You do realize you have to collect 120 Sun AND Moon medals (separately at that 120 sun and 120 moon) in order to unlock the final boss right? And you have to collect them to unlock werehog and daytime levels even before that? Something I clearly mentioned in my post?

Did you even read what I wrote?

In Duck's defense, your post was prefaced saying their "criticisms were all completely justified", so I can understand the confusion.

I don't, it feels like a "gothca" when I was very clear I was talking about their werehog and medal progression criticisms which are pretty well known to anyone who read the review.

It didn't add to anything to the discussion or change anything else I said so it feels less like someone trying to have an actual conversation with me and more like they felt that "gotcha" would somehow discredited everything else I said.

It's a disingenuous point to even bring up at best because I doubt most people even remember that part of the review especially when it mainly focused on the two points I mentioned.

I don't even see a part of my post where what duck mentioned would have been relevant to any of m subsequent paragraphs to the point where even if I HAD known about it then i wouldn't have mentioned it anyways.

I don't think it discredits anything you said, just that the opening sentence is at odds with the bulk of the post, which left you open for the "gotcha". Not a big deal.

So I just read the review and that thing he mentioned isn't even in it. I'm going to assume it's in the video review which nothing in m post stated I saw and should have been very obvious I was talking about the written review.

So not only is it a flawed "gotcha " it is as disingenuous as I said before because I clearly was talking about the text and I think that grown man knew that.

Edit : And they never said the ramp was glitched they said Sonic's reactions in the game are a second delayed, which is OBJECTIVELY true for the 360 version which ran at 30fps and the person was reviewing. That was and still is a common criticism of the 360/PS3 level boost levels.

For what it's worth, this is actually not what DigitalDuck was referring to with "jumping over a ramp and claiming it was glitched". In the video, Sonic quite literally just jumps over a ramp and falls to his death. It's honestly pretty funny.

It doesn't change your critique, but I just felt the need to inform and clear up some confusion. I thought it was pretty obvious you were referring strictly to the written review and nothing else.

I mean, I don't think referring to "IGN's score for the game and criticisms" tells anybody if you're talking about their written review, their video review, or both. It was ambiguous in that regard. jubbalub may have understood, but I sure didn't. And DigitalDuck (maybe) didn't either. But I just rewatched the infamous part in question, and yeah, they don't say it's a glitch. So the gotcha is flawed indeed!

All that aside, and talking now about the video review itself since it's been brought up, I think that what they say in it is fine; they even praise the Daytime stages for the most part. I'll bet that what riled so many people up back in 2008 was the frankly amateurish gameplay shown onscreen being paired with the words. They talk about trial and error gameplay as if that's inherently bad, while showing a disproportionate amount of the "error" part, and not very much of what the game looks like after you've learned it. And like, showing how the game is while you're learning it is valid. But the part where they fail the QTE? Where they gotta press three buttons, with that much time, and they don't hit a single one? It's hard to see that as footage from when they were still learning, and not just footage of them playing bad on purpose. And when paired with their words, it has the effect of coloring how those words are interpreted: as deliberately dishonest. But, again, the words themselves are still fine, I think.

I've only played the Wii version, so I assumed you were collecting them to unlock optional levels. I don't recall progress being gated, but it's been years.

I said I was talking about Unleahsed HD in my initial post. I also said very clearly you were required to unlock levels which you don't do in Unwiished at all.

I ask again did you actually read anything in my post.

Why do you think I mentioned that I had played the Wii version? Because I read that you were playing the HD version. I assumed that when it came to unlocking things that it functioned the same.

Can you please drop this passive aggressive tone, now?

I'm not being rude or passive aggressive. You responded to my posts trying to discredit my criticisms with methods that are literally impossible to do because of how the game is structured.

Me asking you if you actually read anything I wrote wasn't me trying to be mean, it was a legitimate question because how your responses keep going into things I already covered.

The only thing I can do when you respond to me questioning my posts is respond with the correct information. If it comes off as passive agreessive then I apologize but please understand how it feels on my end.

I love how of all Sonic games it's the one where they (checks notes) turned him into a werewolf that people lose their minds over when someone suggests it might not be good or might not be bad
