Unpopular Sonic Opinions

Discussion in 'General Sonic Discussion' started by Londinium, Jun 17, 2022.

  1. This actually makes a lot of sense and coincides with the change to how media is distributed nowadays. If Prime was a weekly show, people... would probably still be annoyed, but less so given they'd have a week to cool off and mull it over. But since we get all of the episodes at once, we just binge and take it all at once.

Prime feels like a Saturday Morning Cartoon show... except we got all of the episodes at once as opposed to waking up every Saturday to see what happens next.
What's the best approximation of what you think the ideal movement for Sonic to be then? I think most default to the Adventure games.

There's not one right answer IMO, but several. I can see a Sonic game with the homing attack being good with a lot of tweaking, but I don't think it's necessary to make a fun 3D Sonic game. I like Sonic Adventure but thinking of it as the end all be all is a bit stifling imo.

An aside: SRB2 has been updated with an option for 3D models for most objects. They look quite nice.

Playing SRB2 with the 3D models turned on and also using physics mods that slow it down, it's far easier to manage than the base game, yet I still think a Homing Attack is handy / recommended. I don't need it, no, but I'm someone used to playing Sonics and Sonic-likes for years. And I can't ask everyone to have me or the average Sonic player's level of skill when going in.

And we could call sticking to what the Adventure formula made stifling, sure, but can't we say the same of the classics? The years of different gameplay styles have shown we don't need rolling or Spindashing either. But I think they offer important things to the gameplay, which is why I'd want them to be used. IMO, same goes for the Homing Attack.

Of course Sonic is for kids. When did we all become fans? As kids. We just never grew out of it.

And regarding SRB2, I love the 3D models I just wish they’d make the things like springs and item monitors a bit bigger. Why are they so tiny?

Not gonna lie guys, but some of you seem like you'd be willing to wear a hooded robe with a sunglasses+mask combo at the local Nofrills just to avoid being caught buying Trix.

The homing attack isn't really a problem in 3D, which, by itself, throws the whole "momentum-based platforming" thing out of the window due to all the issues with depth perception, handling, orientation, etc. And I think the homing attack compliments a certain sense of wonder very well:

If you have to be constantly handling Sonic to perfectly land on a badnik or any other object, this sense is hampered. If you're looking for targets, it gets heightened. The problem is more about being thrown into pits or, more or less, neutralizing any difference between threats. Why don't yu have a second chance if you fumble a homing attack? Why aren't there more badniks that behave differently when interacting with it, even if they're destroyed? In Classic Sonic, it isn't all that important that the badniks will hit you. It's very important, however, that you'll play a certain way so that you don't get hit, and each stage -- with badniks as well as the geometry and gimmmicks -- makes you use Sonic's speed a little differently. If each stage in an Adventure game makes using the homing attack feel a little differently -- which doesn't happen -- I think you don't really need to do away with it.

Just like there are shows only for adults, there are shows only for kids. The best example being Tik-Tak. Popular with kids, but to an adult it's no longer appealing.

As much as I might welcome the gender-equal Eggpeople Empire, Sega know full well what they would unleash on the Internet if there were ever an official Egg-lady.

Yeaa I’m voting against Eggwoman god knows what the internet would do with that. Sage is fine let’s keep her and call it a day lol.

SAGE's arc in Frontiers fell flat for me. I wanted to like her, but the game doesn't give you enough to work off of.

The in-world interactions with the Sonic cast do a solid job of her development, on the "I want to be alive" side of things. You can see Sonic start to break through her shell in Ares Island, and after that, her development is very believable. I especially loved Tails' and SAGE's interaction on Chaos Island, where Tails says it's not a matter of faith, that he has a lifetime of data to back up his beliefs.

It's the Eggman relationship where things get weird. Am I really supposed to believe SAGE and Eggman got that attached to each other when the only interactions we see with them are "do this thing, thanks for helping me, i'm stuck in cyberspace wah". The revelation that SAGE and Eggman are secretly affectionate for each other kinda comes out of nowhere, if you're not listening to the Egg Memos.

I have two proposals for making this better (I am not a writer, your mileage may vary):
    1. Develop SAGE and Eggman's relationship more. Cutscenes of them interacting, exploring Cyber Space, or even just shooting the shit. Let us get to KNOW their relationship instead of just saying "they love each other" in a flashback with comically unfitting music. Ideally, you could do this by making some of the Egg Memos mandatory cutscenes (or make them obtainable in-game collectibles to make them more accessible)
    2. Develop Eggman's arc differently. Push back his attachment to SAGE a bit more, and make it unreciprocated for a bit. Let Eggman warm up to SAGE a lot more slowly (or at least make it less obvious)

Concerning Eggman's relationship with Sage: The harder I think about it, the less I buy into it.

Instead, the plot could be about Eggman going on a self-discovery journey. He sets up an AI (Sage) to trick Sonic into thinking that he had love in him. In the end, Eggman realizes that even in the face of an enemy that presumably wiped out the former users of the Chaos Emeralds (how intimidating), Sonic will still get the upper hand of him, corrupt his AI-generated simulation and bring a happy ending to the story.

Sonic knows Eggman better than Eggman himself.

  20. The main thing that makes Eggman and Sage's dynamic falls apart, aside from the lack of substance to it, is the fact they don't even really do anything interesting with it.

The game contrasts the relationship Sonic has with his friends, with the one Eggman has with Sage. To the point where a key moment in Sage's development (and the most unintentionally funny scene in the game, you know the one.) Is seeing Sonic & Tails relationship a realizing that's what she wants. But at no point does Eggman ever mistreat her in anyway to make that work. It's a relationship that goes from nothing to something we're supposed to care about.

The game never really leverages Eggman as a foil to Sonic; not only are their interactions limited, it's never used to tell a much more fuller story. That's one of the biggest sins of Frontiers imo; not having the main hero and villain bounce off each other.

At least when they did it in Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow was a good enough foil to Sonic to make up for it, but Sage just lacks that same presence imo. Especially since they're definitely going for similar beats in story points.

I'd either have more interactions between Sonic and Sage or actually properly make Eggman a foil here; have Eggman act cold and indifferent towards Sage, treating her like any other of his creations while she's only trying to reach out, and only when she sacrifices herself does he realize what he lost. That's how you make that relationship actually matter.

It's just meaningless fluff as it is now.
