    I was looking at the graphics from that Sonic mobile game and found out something quite surprising. First we had the pink flowers that could have been just taken from the ending sequence, but this is more intriguing...

    So turns out that these guys might indeed have access to material from older builds.

    This is legit? Sure it isn't in the final build?

    Great find, but I don't know where we can go from there. It's sort of strange...I just find it hard to believe that Sega saved all those graphics from the early builds in the source code they gave to the people who ported it.

    I know it's unrelated and absolutely incorrect, but I have to mention that I thought of that maybe-prototype wrecking ball when I saw the lightpost animations on the small screen. XP

    Edit: Waitaminute...which UFO are you talking about? The only ones I knew about were from the Marble Zone background, and that sprite is definately not the same...

    I probably should get back to work on my site someday...
    Are you sure that's not like just some tile from a wall? You just may think it looks like a UFO because of the lower resolution.

    Yes, those. Different animation frame.

    Yeah, it sure doesn't look like one of those Marble Garden UFOs.

    It doesn't? It's a small blue sphere with sky in the background and something in the middle that resembles the rotating ring outside them. So how does it not look like it?

    It can't be any other thing.

    Maybe there are more to the MZ UFOs than we know. Perhaps UFOs were to appear in more places, originally? These could be from a completely different part of the game.

    Nothing that concerns this place in the least.
    Marble Garden is on Sonic 3, not Sonic 1. :P

    Hmm. Upon closer observation, I believe you may be correct after all. This Sonic Mobile game is piqueing my interest more and more.

    Argh, Mystical Ninja, I know that. Dumb typo on my part :disgust:

  13. Argh, and I can't even get that damn game working on my cell!

    And for my comment on that sprite finding, omgtehbeta.

    I hate to spend one of my trial post on this one.
    Can this be confirmed to be real by anyone else than ICEknight?

    BECAUSE I HATE APRIL FOOLS DAY! Looks like ICEknight's drawing style to me.

    Yup, double-confirmed. =P Just redownloaded the game to check this out myself, and it's right there.

    Such a shame the 16x16's were scaled down to 12x12's for this game.. x_x I would've preferred to see this at its' original resolution, but I guess seeing it at all is great - and raises some interesting questions about the development of the mobile version of Sonic 1.

    From the looks of the tiles, it looks like although there are four 16x16 tiles, they could have been made up from only eight 8x8 tiles altogether. How? Simple - the two 'right-half' 16x16's seem to perhaps have been mirror versions of the 'left-half' tiles. Look how the clouds in the background, and the UFO itself, are symmetrical (well, not quite exactly, but close as dammit - I'd assume the difference is due to them being scaled down from 16x16 to 12x12). Interesting..

    BTW, on a side note, anyone else notice the files for the levels in the mobile version seem to be numbered after the originally intended level order, rather than the final level order? The files in the mobile version Part 1 are numbered as follows:

    GHZ = Zone 1
    MZ = Zone 3
    SYZ = Zone 5

    This corresponds directly with the originally intended Zone order (illustrated by both the US/EU version's level select and the assignment of level IDs in the Megadrive version), which is as follows:

    GHZ = 00 (Slot 1)
    LZ = 01 (Slot 2)
    MZ = 02 (Slot 3)
    SLZ = 03 (Slot 4)
    SYZ = 04 (Slot 5)
    SBZ = 05 (Slot 6)

    Just thought this was worth noting; it's not particularly interesting (else I'd have given it its' own topic), but you'd have thought they'd have re-ordered the levels to be in the correct order given that this seems to be a rewrite rather than a port. Then again, you wouldn't have expected one frame of the UFO graphics to turn up, either..

    Mmmmmh... If they ported the game, probably they were too lazy to fix the internal order of the levels :P But did they need to call them in that order? I noticed that the order was scrambled, but for some stupid reason I didn't relate it to that and then ignored it...

    Oh, well... What somebody can find simply looking at the files of the games :P

    Wow, this does suggest that SEGA might actually have old Sonic 1 code, which surprises me, considering that in the Gamespy interview with Naka he said they couldn't find Sonic 2's HPZ code anywhere.

    So, whos up for contacting the developers of Sonic mobile? :(
