That's pretty insane. So that's two Sonic tracks (Ice Cap and Gigalopolis) based on some (non-SEGA) prior work. Both of these are from tracks that ended up getting replaced in their ports, too. Makes me wonder if any other tracks have such dubious origins. Turquoise Hill was also slightly different, but these changes seem small enough that it was probably just to make it sound better.
I'm not sure anyone noticed this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ebio2mu0YAs the NEW NEW NEW NEW sounds just like the first second of Splash hill, and I can't help but start thinking about the rest of the bgm when ever I hear that bit of promotional bumper.

Did a super-quick search and it didn't appear that this had been pointed out yet: Glam Slam by Prince sounds an awful lot like Chemical Plant at just around 3:52 minutes in.
Sky Chase Zone in Sonic 2 sounds like "Ironic" by Alanis Morrisette in some parts, Mainly the first few seconds & around the 25 seconds mark in the song. Even though the Song came out 3 years later after Sonic 2 Metropolis Zone in Sonic 2 has a strong resemblance to "1999" by Prince Lava Reef Zone Act 1 sounds slightly similar to "When Doves Cry" by Prince Marble Garden Act 2 sounds vaguely like "If I Had No Loot" By Tony! Toni! Tone! The Game Over Theme from Sonic 3/& Knuckles sounds like the final few notes from "Let's Go Crazy" by Prince
Indeed, I have observed the 1999 to Metropolis and the Lets Go Crazy to 3K's game over. Nice catches!

S3&K's Marble Garden Zone theme, no? Also, Nigel Butler's "Danger In The Shadows" sounds like it's inspired by S3&K's Death Egg theme a lot.
Ehhh... the opening baseline is similar, but the chord progression and melody are totally different. A lot of folk are saying Marble Garden was based on this, but it smells more like a coincidence to me.
While Outrun and Space Harrier OST were made by Hiro, Outrun 3D's original tracks were composed by Chikako Katamani. It's interesting she chose one of his tracks as an inspiration for this, it's melody is even more interesting than the original!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYhAgaSmkRc These two aren't really super similar (though there are a few places where rhythms are the same) but I had to make this mashup after thinking of it.
I'm surprised no one noticed that the main melody of the Rush Adventure Boss theme: sounds almost exactly like that of Push the Tempo by Fatboy Slim:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo_4R17gYSY http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YgcWQtaXbY Dino Esposito's "Summer Girls" Sounds vaguely similar to S&K's Lava Reef Zone Act 1.
Curtosy of my commute to work http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WRKwin65cs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnuIEeLMDjM EDIT: or the Death Egg stage from Sonic the Fighters... which I should have posted but now I'm on a phone and meh. (The attract screen is Vogue by Madonna IIRC)
Listening to Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes' Bad Luck, almost immediately made Chaotix' Electoria came to mind. I guess it uses Bad Luck's base in a different key and tempo. Check for yourself. EDIT: Couldn't get video to display inside post. Still can't. EDIT2: Ok, got it, short URL without the s from https.
The riff from Stardust Speedway JP is nearly identical to 1988's Walk the Walk by Shakatak At the 47 secs mark At the 13 secs mark Source
I like to think that Stardust Speedway Act 1 from Mania kind of gives a nod to this. The melody is slightly different from the original variations, but still retains enough to not sound exactly like Walk the Walk.
At 0:47, I can't help but thinking that it sounds really familiar to E.T's theme. 0:00 to 0:36
