Things in Sonic Games you misinterpreted when you were younger...

I had the problem with the rolling enemies in Spring Yard Zone. I also thought Tails was a girl until I played Sonic Adventure on Dreamcast.
I also had trouble pronouncing nearly every zone that had an "opolis" in it. Sometimes I would read Labyrinth Zone as "Library Zone", for some odd reason. Oh, and I only just recently found out how to pronounce Hydrocity Zone. Come on, a kid playing the game back then totally wouldn't expect it to be Hydro City Zone. I always thought Dr. Robotnik was a robot himself, given his name.

When Sonic Adventure 2 first came out, one of the commercials led me to believe that Shadow was Sonic's evil twin brother. I'm not sure if anyone remembers, but it was a commercial where they would put two hedgehogs through a testing maze, like lab mice, and then they'd show clips of Sonic and Shadow running through their stages. I swear it confused me to no end, until I actually played the game and found who Shadow was.. then I just felt stupid.

Once, I thought the monitor in the center of the screen with Robotnik's face in it, on Death Egg Zone in Sonic 2 was a box that I could hit, and beat the game, but it never worked. Also, one more thing. I thought that somehow, Robotnik could run faster than Sonic, because after you beat Silver Sonic, you chase him into his last machine, and no matter how fast you go, you can't catch him. I seriously pissed off about that.

 

Damn, I remember that. I remember thinking how excited I was when Mom said she was making spaghetti for dinner, then:

"Wait, did you say Spaghetti-O's?"
"No, spaghetti."
"Awwww."

Was I the only kid stupid enough to totally buy into the idea that gimmicky foods like Spaghetti-Os and McDonalds tasted better than real foods like spaghetti and restaurant hamburgers, even after trying both?

 

Before Sonic Adventure 2 came out for Dreamcast, I thought Shadow was "evil Sonic."

 

Nope! To this day I find nothing more satisfying than a big, fat, greasy Hardee's Monsterburger. Screw restaurant burgers and their lettuce and shit.

 

I thought Tails was a girl until I played Adventure 2 (I didn't play Adventure 1 until later).

 

when I first got Sonic and Knuckles (2006) I thought I had some pirated version of it, or some weird pirating cartridge, because of the connector on the top (hey, I was 10) and that blue sphere was something I discovered. I used to think the restaurant, the sports team, and the sonic boom were named after sonic the hedgehog, I used to think sonic heroes was a good game, and I used to pronounce chao as "chay-oh"(I was 6)

 

Not specifically Sonic related, but when I saw games for all the various Sega platforms (Genesis, Game Gear, Saturn), I used to believe that they were all just slightly different consoles, in the way that PCs by different manufacturers were different, yet for some reason were completely incompatible with one another. So naturally, when I saw that Sonic 3D Blast for Saturn was about 20 dollars cheaper than the one for Genesis, I thought it was totally unfair.

 

I thought Mystic Cave was made of chewed up gum or set in the intestines of some giant monster. Yeah, don't ask.

 

Reminds me of the Gum monster in Pac-Man 2 :P

 

Until I got a Genesis, I always thought that Tails was a girl, due to his yawn animation in Sonic 3D looking like he had lipstick.

 

When I was young and was playing Sonic games, I was sure Amy was Sonic's sister. I don't remember how that started, but it took me at least 5 years to finally discover the truth.

 

Because we know only a girl would wear lipstick, right? ;P

Another thing I misinterpreted was the role of Heavy and Bomb in Knuckles Chaotix. Because I read the Archie Comics adaption first, where they were portrayed as good guys, I always assumed they were. It was only later that I realised that they were meant to be plants of Robotnik's that want to slow you down. (I didn't read the manual as thoroughly as I should have, I guess.)

 

Since I had done the same back then and haven't given it a thought since I was younger, I'm only just now saying to myself "Shit. They were the bad guys!?" God, I am officially behind the times. :v:

 

Alright, this thread has made me unsure of my current beliefs.

For clarification, is Hydrocity Zone pronounced "Hydro City" or "Hydrocity (Hi-drah-si-tee)"?

Likewise, how is Chao pronounced? (In reference to the little creatures of a pudding-like consistency)

 

I'd always thought of it as "Hi-drah-si-tee" myself, with it being one word. Although I believe the same game lists "Icecap" too, so who knows...

And I used to think it was "K.O." 'til Omochao hammered it into my brain during SA2/B, but it's definitely "Chow".

 

I'm pretty sure it's "Hydro City". I read the stuff about the velocity pun, but that's not exactly in line with EVERY OTHER LEVEL NAME EVER which wasn't a pun, so I'm lead to doubt it.

 

~I used to think that Mystic Cave had a secret second boss in a different part that, if you beat it, would take you to Minty Mines in Spyro 2: Season of Flame. It took me a few years to realise that Genesis and GBA are not the same thing.

~Another thing is, I used to think that if you let Tails catch up to you in Sonic 2 after he falls down a hole or dies or something, he'd take all your rings and throw you into the nearest enemy or spike pit or whatever as revenge. I know I would...

~Come to think of it, when, in the games, do they eat? I've always wondered- if the characters find themselves starving, like in Sandopolis or whatever, would Tails eat Sonic (since foxes have been known to eat hedgehogs), or would it be the other way around because Sonic's bigger?

~In 2D games with Tails and/or Cream in, HOW DO HER EARS AND HIS TAILS STAY IN ONE PLACE WHEN SPINDASHING?! That's always got to me...

~Finally, it's played upon my mind for some time: why doesn't Sonic just marry Amy (besides, you know, the four-year age gap)? No other character as far as I know expresses such devotion to him? I've boiled it down to this: If he does marry Amy, he'll be arrested for paedophilia (a 16-year-old marrying a 12-year old?!) and if he doesn't, he'll be alone forever, since he won't go back to Amy in the forseeable future, or when she grows into a marryable person.

 

In the same way, how does anyone spin on the spot?
