I bought my little brother a Sega Genesis for Christmas and gave it to him early, and I've become addicted to Sonic again. Now I only need Sonic and Knuckles to make my life complete. Plus, I finally got the Sonic 3 level select code to work yesterday! But my little brother had to play the damn Xbox so I lost the awesomemest achievement of my life.

I just kinda figured something out that may or may not be true, but I think it's very likely.

Masayuki Nagao (many people are mistaking this as an alias for Naofumi Hataya but I'm pretty sure these are two totally different people) composed music for Shinobi 3 around the same time as Sonic 3, or he might've come off from working on the project to work on Sonic 3. I'm sure that since Flying Battery Zone really sounds like something from the Shinobi, the programmed instruments and ninja like sound, he had some influence in the song. I'm not saying it was composed by him (since we still don't really know everything that Howard did for Sonic 3 since anything he did for the game was Sonic Team's choice), but he had a part with it in someway or form. Tokuhiku Uwabo is also a likely candidate for Flying Battery as well, since the instruments sound exactly to what he was using while programming The Super Shinobi music.

My guess it might be like this:

    Music by: Masayuki Nagao
    Programmed by: Tokuhiku Uwabo

Or the other way around, who knows.

  5. Is it just me or has there been an increase in the number of theories posted in this thread? As I see it, "theories" =/= "knowledge"... When I come here I expect to see (preferably mindblowing :v: ) facts I didn't know about, not things that may or may not be true and we will most likely never find out.

It looks like getting the good ending in Sonic 3D automatically enables the level select (wait until it ends though, don't reset or it won't work). Doesn't this add up to three ways to enable the level select?

Yea, I dislike the Masayuki Nagao/Naofumi Hataya confusion! They MUST be two different persons.

Well, as for the "supreme topic of guessing":
I listened to Shinobi 3's music, but none could be linked (easily) to any Sonic 3 music. It is just so different music. Here are all my stuff on the matter (I wish I could update it, but I am 'in check' with the current information out there):
    http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?sho...st&p=270176

And this is what the Google translator could give me from that archived Wave-Master 2004 staff site posted a couple of pages back:
It is NOT the full credits, as I was only interested in those games myself. Tatsuyuki Maeda only says he worked on Sonic 3, where the others worked on both Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles, which I find useless, as ALL the music in Sonic & Knuckles were already in Sonic 3, except for the ones that were replaced by Howard Drossin.
I have put ?? for Tomonori Sawada because he/she should have been credited for Sonic 3, but was not on the staff page!
Masaru Setsumaru in Sonic 2? I didn't know that. The game didn't say, or did it?
Forget Tomoko Sasaki, I just had to put her in my notes so that she won't mess up anything in the future.
Jun Senoue did more than that, but I don't care.
Naofumi Hataya, dual personality, why would he hide his awesome work for Sonic 3. Because he MUST not be Masayuki Nagao, for the love of god please update the wiki with proof.

About a month back I looked on that album that had the Sonic 3 remix of the Data Selection screen from the game, which was done by Naofumi Hataya for Sonic Gems Collection. It has liner notes, but when I gave them to someone to translate it seems like it was just a favorite track of his that he had nothing to do with it originally. So yeah, he didn't do anything for the game - Naofumi Hataya and Masayuki Nagao are two different people.

As for the Masayuki Nagao bit, I did listen to the Shinobi 3 soundtrack as well and I couldn't find anything that sounded like it either. But of course, there were 2 other composers that worked along side him on the project as well. There was a soundtrack of a lot of Shinobi music released last year, but it doesn't credit anyone specifically for the Shinobi 3 tracks. But Flying Battery Act 1 definitely sounds like something Bo had a hand in since it uses the same programmed instruments from when he programmed the music for the earliest Shinobi game for the Megadrive. I did find where Bo works but I couldn't find a way to contact him to ask. :(

If it means anything, I originally thought he had a hand in the Gum Ball bonus stage since it sounds a lot like something from Castle of Illusion, another game Bo programmed for - but the Sonic 3D blast credits say that Jun Senoue did the programming and the arranging for the track. The slots bonus stage music sounds like it might've been done by Bo as well, because I can't think of anyone else who can compose happy tunes that isn't Jun Senoue apparently.

There is no indication or documentation of Nagao ever being an actual person. Prove to me that he has a documented existence separate from Hataya and I will consider removing the information. At this point, though, the ridiculous number of factors that connect the two as the same person are too overbearing for me to consider them a coincidence.

Well, it would kinda make sense that they are different people because the games Nagao were credited for often times had other people along side him - and their named are fully revealed and aren't aliases. In fact, none of the employees listed in the Shinobi 3 credits are using aliases (I know Milpo was an odd ball on the Sonic 3 credits list where he had his alias used everywhere he went, but still - in this case I think it's obvious that none of the names provided are aliases):

    http://www.mobygames.com/game/genesis/shin...-master/credits

Also, he has other aliases listed as well that play around with this name. So to me at least, it would be weird to have an alias of another alias. But I can understand why it would be weird to say that Nagao is a different person, because like Bo, he just "disappeared" after 1994 and didn't work anywhere in the gaming industry again.

That album I mentioned with the Shinobi 3 music also credited Nagao and the two other composers who worked on it by this name. But it also still gave credit to tracks by people's aliases as well, so that might not be the documentation you're looking for. :\

But I mean, if Hataya's old WAVE Master page doesn't have any of the games that Nagao was credited for listed, it can't be him:

Tried to translate that list to best of my Google Translate-based abilities (with some help from no-intro and what I found for Sega Retro) :U Absolutely certain about the game titles but not entirely certain about the roles (see notes):

Just something I thought worth mentioning since no one responded:
    Indeed there is, and Tiddles implemented it in this exact context in <a href="http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic 3 Complete (hack)" target="_blank" style="background: url(http://info.sonicretro.org/images/5/50/Reticon.png) right no-repeat; padding-right: 20px; border-bottom: 1px dotted #3366BB; color: #3366BB; cursor:pointer; text-decoration:none;" class="wiki">Sonic 3 Complete (hack)</a>.

To be precise, the one I use in FBZ is edited, cobbled together mostly from the ending sprite mentioned here, but also the normal EggRobo boss sprite - since the ending version doesn't have any hit/explosion states, and faces absolutely straight on, which would make it harder to see where the boss is intending to move.

It wouldn't have made sense for the original creators to use the exact ending artwork for that boss, but there's plenty of room to fit another copy like I did without removing anything, and it doesn't take much artistry to do, so there isn't really much excuse for missing it IMO - especially since EggRobo does have unique graphics for the boss before that.

Sonic CD's engine is basically copypasta of Sonic 1's, yet Yuji Naka isn't listed as "programmer" in the credits. Worse yet, he doesn't even get a special thanks credit! (Bo gets special thanks in Phantasy Star 4 because they remixed 2 of his songs - you'd think Yuji would get credit for making almost the whole engine!)

Likewise, Ohshima isn't thanked in Sonic 2, even though a lot of the sprites are practically verbatim. Was there a bit of sour rivalry going on at the time or were these omissions merely oversights? :tinfoil:

I don't think it's that, but rather at the time crediting your developers wasn't exactly standard practice and some devs didn't WANT to be listed. It seems like an easy enough oversight to me.

    Life.
Didn't know where else to put this.

    EVERY LITTLE COUNTS

OVA composer Mitsuhiro Tada's blog. He seems rather active on it. "Sonic the Hedgehog BGM" is listed among his works, but that's about it in relation. Nearly all in Japanese (obviously).

Just putting it here so we know we have it.
