About the hidden monitors, there's no need to memorize their positions if you use an emulator. I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up yet.
If you enable sprites always on top, or disable the scroll B high layer, the monitors will show up underground.
...Well, I just tested before sending this, and it's very awkward... At first, nothing appeared, then, a static monitor appeared underground once I popped the water shield monitor on the end of AIZ1. I also remember that in some stages, the monitors peak a little. Some people know a lot about how buried monitors work, better than I do.

Also, as we're sort of in the topic of randomnesses, how is the bonus stage decided in Sonic 3 and/or Sonic 3 & Knuckles?

In Sonic 3, 50+ rings get you to the gumball bonus stage.
In Sonic & Knuckles, 20 rings get you to the slot machine bonus stage and 35 rings will get you to the vertical rise. I don't remember how it works after 50 though, it might be every 20 and every 35 alternating.
In Sonic 3 & Knuckles, 20 rings get you to the slot machine, 35 to the bonus rise, 50 to the gumball machine, 70 to the slot machine, 85 to the vertical rise, and 100 to the gumball machine... so on and so forth.

    Close, but not quite...

In both S&K and S3&K, the stage selected changes every 15 rings.

    In S3&K:
    20-34 - Slot
    35-49 - Pinball
    50-64 - Gumball
    65-79 - Slot
    80-94 - Pinball
    95-109 - Gumball
    And so on.

In S&K it's the same but with Gumball missing from the rotation, so:
    20-34 - Slot
    35-49 - Pinball
    50-64 - Slot
    65-79 - Pinball
    And so on.

One thing that is definitely known in general, but a surprising number of people don't seem to know, is that you can tell which stage you're going to get from the colour of the stars above the starpole - white for gumball, red for pinball, yellow for slot.

And on the subject of known but mildly obscure bonus stage trivia - in Sonic 3, any rings you collect after hitting a starpole and before entering its bonus stage are discarded at the start of the bonus stage, as is your previous shield. You can also jump in mid-air at the start of the bonus stage - Tails can also use this to fly and hence cheat significantly. All of these were fixed in S3&K.

Gathering information on Sega World Sydney and collecting Sonic merchandise.
I just found a very obscure Sonic cameo in Sega's Vocaloid game, Hatsune Miku: Project Diva. In the game, you can collect old Sega consoles to decorate Miku's room, and guess what game's in the MegaDrive? [IMG]

I have another question. It is not mentioned in the SR wiki. How is the music for the Genesis games in Sonic Jam done? Is it redbook audio? PCM? Specially written module files that utilize the synth in the Saturn?

Hey, I've never read through this topic before and I don't plan to read every page anytime soon, but I just wanted a simple answer to this question.

Has anyone theorized that the Mystic Caves and the Old Hidden Place (S2Beta) could be located in the Mystic Ruins and could be the former resting place of Angle Island before it took to the skys?

  9. I'm pretty sure Mystic Cave and Hidden Palace were supposed to be on West Side Island like the rest of Sonic 2.

I doubt Angel Island could fit inside them anyway.

Oh, wow. I'm WAY out of touch with my old-school Sonic knowledge. Thanks for clearing that up.

Not worthy it's own topic, but...

This seems to be official Japanese Sonic merchandise:

Yeah, they are real. I remember them from Channel a few years ago. They're supposed to be for friendship, but the hearts really give a different impression.

Something I haven't seen mentioned before in Sonic 2006, though I'm sure some people know about it.

In Sonic's Wave Ocean, there's a part where you have to switch to Tails to activate a switch. If you've beaten the game and have Sonic's <strike>Action Replay</strike> Power-Up Gems, you can skip this area and get to the island with the switch on it using the Purple one.

On the island, behind a few crates IIRC, there's a tunnel that's partially used in Shadow's Wave Ocean, with the rest of his level visible beyond it. Using the Cyan or Purple gem, you can get over to the loop, which has no speed panels or anything because of the lack of layout data. As a result it's also unscripted, but the gravity is still missing.

Just something I found interesting while <strike>trying to break the game even further</strike> messing around :v:

The same is true of that partially submerged corkscrew for Omega and Blaze (and Tails in his own act? not sure) in Wave Ocean.

  15. You might know that several websites have the Konami Code hidden in them. As part of a viral marketing campaign for the new Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World home release, Fark.com does, too, but it leads to a series of trivia questions that will let you unlock one code, then another, etc.

A code from Sonic 1 is included, but it's not the one you're probably thinking of: <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>the secret Japanese credits code, cccccc<up><down><left><right>. The wiki has an extra two <down>s for some reason, but GameFAQs doesn't</span>.

The extra Down presses are only required in the Japanese version, if I remember correctly.

Funny little trivia game, by the way...

In Sonic 4 you can't get a life from getting 100 rings as Super Sonic. Another fun little thing they overlooked in that game.

Yes you can, I just did.

Are you sure you weren't playing Time Attack mode?

Hey, wait a second. I just tested it again, and it works on the 360 but not the iPod.

EDIT: Never mind. I was testing it on Casino Street Act 2 and I think I got an extra life and 100 rings at the same time from the cards, 'cause it didn't work on Splash Hill.

Maybe they did that on purpose so you couldn't hoard lives in Casino Street Act 1 with the constant jackpots as Super Sonic. But that's unlikely, because...well, Act 2.

If they wanted you to not hoard lives then why is the life cap 999? Seriously I have 460 lives. I'm not getting a game over anytime soon

Because now they can use variable types larger than an unsigned byte? But seriously, I still think they may have done it on purpose. There's no way they could miss something that big.

Speaking of Sonic 4's Super Sonic, he can break monitors when he's not spinning as long as he's airborne, and has water breathing capabilities. But you probably already knew both of those.
