You can do this with the 2D Mario games too.

I certainly hope you guys aren't being serious about those of us who don't know about every minute detail of S3K. When you get out of mommy and daddy's house and start working, paying your own bills, and tending other errands, you'll suddenly start finding less time to examin video games 24/7.

Already doing all that, have been for quite some time, but yeah, most of us found all of this stuff back when we were a lot younger.

I knew how to get there from the left, but not from the right.

Well, I wasn't being that serious, but it does seem that absolutely everything is new to some people.

Oh, and while I still live with my father, and I'm not working yet, I'm only 19, going to University, and I am paying my own bills. Also, most of these things are directly off the main route through the level, and require very little exploration to find, let alone "examining video games 24/7".

I found out about this when I first played the game. I was 10, maybe younger. Oops?

You might want to examine the structure in which you are currently sitting. I believe it is not a high horse, but rather a pile of bullshit.

So I was messing with the time over code in sonic 1, and while I waited for a time over I noticed something. If you have no rings, of course the HUD flashes red. Same when you are running out of time. If you collect rings while the Time in the HUD flashes red, it stops flashing red along with the RINGS in the HUD. o.O I did this in a non-hacked rom, and it does the same thing.

Nice find! They fixed it in Sonic 2, though. :argh:

Did they? Interesting, and after looking in the code it looks as though both the RINGS and TIME HUD uses the same VRAM address, but I have no clue if that has anything to do with this though. :v:

You're late by approximately two years :v:

edit: you know what? I'm going to put this on the wiki, since it's not there yet

Are you sure that was there before? I'm pretty sure I would've remembered reading it. :v:

Yeah, I encountered that bug when I made it possible to change the time limit in my hack, so I had to fix it :)
I think I even released the fixed code some time ago... And if I didn't I can dig it up now.
    Replace
    Code (Text):
    1. Obj21_Flash:            ; XREF: Obj21_Main
    2.         tst.w    ($FFFFFE20).w; do you have any rings?
    3.         beq.s    Obj21_Flash2; if not, branch
    4.         clr.b    $1A(a0)    ; make all counters yellow
    5.         jmp    DisplaySprite
    6. ; ===========================================================================
    7.
    8. Obj21_Flash2:
    9.         moveq    #0,d0
    10.         btst    #3,($FFFFFE05).w
    11.         bne.s    Obj21_Display
    12.         addq.w    #1,d0    ; make ring counter flash red
    13.         cmpi.b    #9,($FFFFFE23).w; have    9 minutes elapsed?
    14.         bne.s    Obj21_Display; if not, branch
    15.         addq.w    #2,d0    ; make time counter flash red
    With
    Code (Text):
    1. Obj21_Flash:
    2.         tst.w    ($FFFFFE20).w; do you have any rings?
    3.         beq.s    Obj21_Flash2; if not, branch
    4.         moveq    #0,d0
    5.         btst    #3,($FFFFFE05).w
    6.         bne.s    Obj21_Display
    7.         cmpi.b    #9,($FFFFFE23).w; have    9 minutes elapsed?
    8.         bne.s    Obj21_Display; if not, branch
    9.         addq.w    #2,d0    ; make time counter flash red
    10.         bra.s    Obj21_Display
    11. ; ===========================================================================
    12.
    13. Obj21_Flash2:
    14.         moveq    #0,d0
    15.         btst    #3,($FFFFFE05).w
    16.         bne.s    Obj21_Display
    17.         addq.w    #1,d0    ; make ring counter flash red
    18.         cmpi.b    #9,($FFFFFE23).w; have    9 minutes elapsed?
    19.         bne.s    Obj21_Display; if not, branch
    20.         addq.w    #2,d0    ; make time counter flash red

Oh whoops, I probably should have read the thread more. :v: And I noticed that I mentioned that the VRAM addresses were the same, in which they aren't even located in the same VRAM address. :v:

Interesting that I read this again back on page 17, because I came across a version which fixed this bug but right now can't remember where I played it, it was either on my copy of the xbla sonic 2 or the megadrive collection on the same console, both are probably the same roms but as I tried ducking the gunk, it hurt me still. In a rom I played via kega fusion I can still become immune to the blue stuff robotnik drops, so I think they fixed it at some point.

Anyone know which revision? I have no idea if the xbla/collection versions had tweaks to them or not compared to the original roms on cart back in the day.

It's ironic; I independently fixed this bug for my hack just the other day.

My solution was somewhat less elegant than yours, though... :ssh:

It took until last year to realise that were actually Special Stage Rings beyond Lava Reef 1. I thought they ended there.

Yeah, you can do this in Casino Night too, if you stick to the boss wall quick enough.

    W00T! Vid pimpage for me!

    found that yonks ago, funsies.

Don't mind it myself, although I do get a ridiculous amount of people ask how I got the Sonic CD jump sound into S&K.

I found something in a Sega magazine from Finland that might be interesting. There's a picture of Michael Jackson playing Sonic 2, and somehow in the passage you can see the words "SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3", so...

I'm sure the picture itself is very familiar. But also note, this is from the April 1993 issue of Sega Force. That's pretty early for Sonic 3 standards. Also notice that in this picture, Michael seems to be in Japan. I know he did some weird space simulation for Sega's arcades over in Japan, but I'm wondering if he had other things on his agenda while he was down there?
