But that's not what he's saying, he's saying that if Sonic Advance 1 were named Sonic 4 it would have been more harshly criticized in comparison to the console titles it would've been claiming to follow-up on for lacking core features that the previous title had featured. Naming it it's own seperate series allows it a lighter perception because it's being judged as it's own thing. It wouldn't have made the game bad, just more heavily criticized.

This was the realisation made after launch, but in the original trailer:

    console console console

I think the mobile versions were announced later(?). But it doesn't really matter - they released it for 360 and PS3, and it's difficult to argue Sonic 4 takes advantage of those systems in the same way Sonic Advance does for the GBA.

I mean Sega were using the super low power "multi-boot" mode for the GBA for transporting Chao around from events. You can probably name the developers who used that feature of the hardware on one hand.

Advance 1 undoubtedly would have been more harshly criticized had it been named Sonic 4, for many of the reasons stated. But I don't think it would have been nearly as harshly criticized as Sonic the Portable was. In terms of gamefeel and moveset, nothing from Sonic 1 is missing (the litmus test I am partial to). The same cannot be said for the 2010 game.

RE that barrel: does the timeline and location line up for the UK shoots for To Be This Good... advertising campaign? He says some of the video was shot in the UK, and it has an industrial feel to a lot of the shooting locations for the campaign...

I had a quick look this morning to see if there were any obvious barrels in UK adverts but... no. Sting's video also came out in 1993 (I didn't have time to check a specific month), which was before a fair number of these Sega adverts aired.

It's not in the Wonder Man video either... though again, that was 1994 so

Total guesswork, but considering the surfer and rastafari-adjacent aesthetics of Riders, my assumption was always that it just got used since it's a word used a lot in that culture and religion.

  10. Yeah I've been sifting through Sega's UK TV spots from 1991-1994, which is a total cringe-fest and seems intended to turn up my ADHD to 11. Haven't found anything yet.

The single came out on the 7th June, 1993. Apparently the song is about his house and/or wife, who he married in August 1992, so a 10 month window where the video was recorded.

p.s. I think it's meant to be a non-descript PERIOD OF THE PAST. I didn't find the barrel but I did find the car (I think that's old-style P-reg from 1975-1976), and those "BP Super" pumps are of 1960s vintage.

    I'm a riot at parties.

I checked the music video again. I don't see Sting in the barrel footage. I mean he's composited in, but the barrel looks like it exists in New York.
He's both speaking generally and not specifying a country here. Given the above, he likely means a New York-based supply house. Which probably had access to a UK-tagged vehicle (it is a film set after all).

Anyone looking into UK commercials might want to check US commercials instead ;)

  16. I was wondering this whole time if I was looking in the right place. A barrel of this shape seems like it'd be perfect for a Sonic Spinball promo...

I was just on the wiki to check who published AoStH on VHS in the UK...

Did you know that Silvio Berlusconi Communications held the original European distribution rights to AoStH? As in, future primer minister of Italy, Silvio Berlusconi.

We sort-of did, but we're not tracking the history of this relationship. His company had some deals with DiC, and while I assume they went their separate ways at some point... it could be that AoStH indirectly paid for his election campaign(s) and is thus responsible for the governance of Italy.

I mean granted I'm sure a lot of things "indirectly" pay for political campaigns but hey, something to think about maybe.

Presenting the magical world of PolyGram - there was a cassette released in 1997 with (at least) two different labels. Are the contents different? Probably not, but it can't be ruled out I guess.

I'll leave Wikipedia to have the final say on PolyGram's recent history
so they sold it but they didn't, except they did, but there's another one.

    well done
