Yeah, that's much more plausible. Sometimes you just forget Sonic 3 was supposed to be this big two parter from the get go. Sonic 3's development page has the following to say:

  2. An interesting thing between the concept to final for that artwork is Sonic's other hand going from a "finger gun" in the concept:
    upload_2024-10-18_12-34-1.png
To only the single finger in the final:
    upload_2024-10-18_12-34-36.png

I've got to imagine this was intentional to indicate the "Part One" visually as well (even in the final cover, which doesn't have the text), or maybe I'm just reaching :psyduck:

Does it not combine with the fingers he's holding up in his other hand to equal 3?

  4. The more involved Carnival Night background on the concept inadvertently looks a whole lot like the 80’s pop art of the Japanese boxes, that’s pretty neat it’s a shame the final art ending up being so bland in comparison.

I actually feel the exact opposite. The early cover looks really messy and incoherent to me, while I really appreciate the final cover's more subdued recreation of CNZ, mainly because it's extremely accurate to the game itself.

  6. Is the sketch supposed to be Carnival Night? It's rather cluttered.

His other hand has 3 fingers. So his hands say 3 and 1 (ie Sonic 3 Part 1).

I'm a pretty big fan of Sonic 3's PAL box. Makes me wish we could've seen what they had planned for SK/S3P2. However I do have a very soft spot for the current SK box art because the lock-on silhouettes is genius.

  9. I think so just based off either some early concept art or just being told the game has a carnival level.
Yeah the final is almost like a HD remake of the level art but I think it clashes with how off Sonic and Knuckles look in comparison.

This is issue 265 of Retro Gamer. It has a six page feature in which Takashi Iizuka talks about the creation of Sonic Generations, and then two pages in which he talks about expanding and remastering the game as Sonic X Shadow Generations. Once again, this is a feature that I have written so this is very much a shill post. With your support, I can keep on getting away with this. =P

Anyway, the magazine went on sale at UK retailers today. For those who prefer to buy online, you can do so at Magazines Direct whether you're in the UK or elsewhere. If you visit a US store that carries the magazine regularly, this issue should arrive about a month from now.

Working on ripping models from Sonic Gens 3DS for my SxSG mod, and I got a neat unused find. Under TARGET.cpk/GAME/ENEMY/BOSS2_ENE.amb is a resource file called B_BIO_EGG_SET.BCRES, which constains a model called B_BIO_egg_dummy. These seem to have been used in development to figure out where Biolizard's bubbles, or eggs as this game calls them, should spawn.

Edit turns out it's not just the eggs, we've also got the node Sonic homing attacks onto to grind on the Biolizard:

And the spline points on the Biolizard's rail:

My subs copy arrived this week and while I'm only halfway through the mag, that does include the cover article. A sterling job as usual, hearing some insight into the original game's development is as fascinating as always.

Imagine a world where after all this time, there were still Sonic Adventure guide books that haven't been documented...

    Sonic Adventure (book)

You may have noticed, but I tend to just dump things on Sonic Retro these days, because there's a forum's worth of Sonic fans that can fill in the details. I tend to prioritise the wikis that don't have that advantage.

Never be afraid to do something similar - you don't have to be an expert in every field to contribute, as long as it's vaguely marked as being incomplete so it doesn't get lost in the system.

Look at that Dark Chao. What is he up to? And Omega getting maintenance at Tails' garage? Neat!

Something interesting I realized while reading the second revision of the SatAM Bible (the earliest one that we have).

It's almost entirely written from the perspective of the characters themselves, and includes a segment where Robotnik describes his Badniks. Here's how he describes a Buzz Bomber:

    IMG_20241102_090629.jpg
Nothing unusual, right? (Aside from describing a machine as a "mutant", that is.) Well, here's how a nondescript bee-like Badnik is described in Archie Sonic issue #51:

    IMG_20241102_205948(1).jpg
Pretty wild, right? It seems that Archie was still using extremely early SatAM production material as reference in 1997. Also of note is how Nate Morgan, a friendly human wizard described in the SatAM Bible, lended his name to an Overlander scientist introduced in 1998's Archie Sonic issue #64.

Curious that he'd say "laser cannons" while showing missiles.

Maybe it was just foreshadowing for Sonic Superstars.

Little blunders like this happened all the time in the comic's early years, presumably due to lack of communication between the writer and the artists.

Perhaps the most infamous example of this is issue #25, where Spaz correctly illustrated Metal Sonic flying with his jet engine, yet Gallagher's script described his destruction being due to excessive friction on his legs from running too fast.

How on earth does one misinterpret Buzzbomber as a dragonfly? Even as a kid playing Sonic 1 on a small CRT TV I could tell it was a bee.

I swear, sometimes I wonder if the old localizers and cartoon producers were playing dense and deliberately getting everything about the games wrong because they thought it was funny.

    Also...
Is it just me or does one of the two Sonic reflections in that Buzzbomber's eyes appear to have "hair"?

This one is a bit of a tangent, but if you ever wanted to know how much power was in the Space Colony Ark's laser, this gives a pretty good comparison.
