I used to translate and subtitle Sonic Songs in my own language (and used stolen fanart) when i was 14.
I'm going to say that Sonic music, ESPECIALLY vocal Sonic music plays a strong appeal in gaming circles because of how recognizable (and good) they tend to be. Unbroken streak.
Edit: For example, Sonic Symphony. Even folks who don't like the series were watching that live stream (I still remember tweets saying stuff like "heh, imagine getting excited for Unleashed".)

Anyone remember that time in mid-2022 when we got two mentions of planet Mobius? Being the first officially licensed uses of that name since 2013?

Did Sega approve the use of that name on either occasion, or did they simply not see a reason to care if they did or not?

I imagine they just didnt care in these instances given the former is from a different continuity and the latter is probably something they just made an intern give a vague glance to make sure nothing is super horribly wrong before giving it the ok.

Fall Guys is now available on iOS in the European Union™ and Android Worldwide™
This is Sonic related because Sonic items are in Fall Guys, and this is definitely going to kill any chance Sonic Rumble originally had, if Stumble Guys didn't do it first.

So the other day the Spanish Sonic twitter account posted an image containing a bunch of seemingly new (or at least unseen) renders of the modern cast (except for Charmy): GVF3aHhWIAAeUjw.jpg
I think the posing/line of action here is a decent step up from most of the stuff you'd find in the modern style guide (it's nice to see Eggman laughing in an extravagant pose for once instead of just sort of standing there), but man, these models and lighting need updating. If you told me these have been sitting on a hard drive since 2006 I'd believe you lmao

Modern Sonic has had this one art/model style since 2008, which is kind of crazy to think about when you consider how basically every 3D game prior had a different art style from the last. I don't really wanna go through a rollercoaster of styles like that again but can't help but wish we'd get some kind of revision soon.

In terms of art styles, I do wish we could "go through a rollercoaster of styles like that" again. Keep things fresh, Sega.

I would love to see 2000’s Uekawa style somehow translated into 3D. I wonder if it would work?

We had a few different styles for 2D Sonic at least. Riders, Battle, that awful chronicles Sonic X tracing character portraits…

Oh! I totally forgot about early Dreamcast stuff! It actually looks pretty good, a bit dated of course, but with a few tweaks?

Now I want a game with Uekawa 3D Sonic.

Art is in the eye of the beholder - I think that looks hideous. Modern Sonic's art style got a lot better once they were past this.

2000’s Uekawa style looks better in 2D, sorry.

I'm more in the boat of thinking Uekawa's style works best in 2D, and honestly I do wish Sonic Team would return to having him make box art instead of keeping him in calendar art purgatory. But I also think there's potential for his style to work in 3D, with the Adventure 1 renders being a decent start although very clearly a product of late 90's CGI.

Those old Uekawa-inspired renders have a lot more personality than the bland models we have today :colbert:

"Personality" can only do so much. Whenever I'm looking at those renders, I cannot look away from that gross, leathery fur texture, the lighting reminiscent of Ken Penders' airbrushing or those ridiculous clown shoes.

Whatever the original vision behind those renders might have been, they were at the very least ruined by shortcomings in either rendering technology or the know-how of the people who used it.

I honestly think it's the posing and cutscene direction that makes the current models look bland, doesn't matter how good your model is if you never do anything interesting with it. The stuff I like about those old renders isn't the models but the exaggerated foreshortening, it's simply a more interesting pose than any of the current renders.

It's that time of the year again when random stock images show up in the wild and I can't help but think, "Haven't I seen this before?"

Though heavily obscured, I'm pretty sure that's Bridge Island Zone and the cave from Green Hill Zone in the second and third picture.

  19. Not sure where else to put this, so I'll put it here: I've recently completed a full remake of ORKAL/GoldS's classic Sonic 3 and Knuckles Glitches and Oversights series! Having everything in 1080p60 makes some of the visual bugs shown off a lot easier to decipher, and I was even able to recreate the Megaglitch in an up-to-date emulator. This series was super formative to me growing up, so I felt it was only right to pay it forward and enhance it for the modern age :)

    Super pedant fun time:

In Sonic 1, and probably other games, Sonic does not have "lives". If you get 100 rings, 50,000 points or hit that suspicious Sonic monitor, you are not awarded a "life".

In Japan, you are awarded a "1up", and in the West, it is a "chance" (though curious the US manual still claims Sonic can "die"). Thus when you start the game, Sonic has "three chances".

    Hyper pedant fun time:

Sega of America eventually settled on the "lives" terminology for games, and recommended that any counter dictated the "lives remaining" (aka "0 counts as a life" was recommended policy.). Sonic would fail their recommendations, because the x3 dictates the lives you have, including the current life you're using right now.

But... by specifiying it's a "chance" counter, I guess you avoid that.

    Don't you love them.
