Nah, Ken Horowitz has said in the past that Crackers was most likely a submission ROM, which were pitches to demonstrate new concepts to management. I also doubt Sega would try to sever ties with Naka given that he was churning out hit after hit in the early '90s and was offered a producer role right after finishing Sonic & Knuckles in '94.

Sonic Retro used to force its users to take a test before registering to demonstrate a level of competence, and then there was a 20-post trial period where moderators would have to make a conscious effort let people in. You don't build walls that high if your fanbase was civil.

There was a community somewhere (I can't remember its name) who spent their days posting, in graphic detail, how they wanted to forcefully impregnate Sonic characters. Reading this stuff was like taking part in a scientific study, at a time where Sega were releasing, and people defending, Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 06. I'm not sure that's toxicity in the sense you're describing, but it was wise to keep your distance.

Whether other communities are better or worse... I mean when you've got a board whose raison d'etre is just to post opinions on something, it will degrade into bored children shouting at each other. Sonic Retro was generally better than that because there were things to actually discuss - "explore this wacky prototype of Sonic 2 I've found". People used to dig and find things... and it was fascinating. Most of this occurs on Sega Retro/NEC Retro now, which is why I gravitate over there.

Everyone thinks their community is the worst. I’ve browsed and been a part of a bunch of them, Call of Duty, James Bond, Mario, Zelda, Star Wars, the list goes on.

Basically, people are generally just wankers, and it really doesn’t matter what community one goes to. The issue with Sonic is that, because it borders so many genres and encapsulates so many themes that it draws so many types of people in. There are other series that do the same, but Sonic is also fairly mainstream and covers a range of ages, so it gets the attention.

Sonic Retro is far better than other places though, in my opinion, anyway.

Actually, my first thought when I saw Sonic at the top of the list wasn't that it was toxic due to mean/offensive fans but due to sheer furry creepiness. Because (while I'm sure not going to research it), I suspect Sonic is the franchise on that list with the most fan-made porn, and almost certainly the one with the most porn involving animals (pleasepleaseplease don't tell me that Animal Crossing fans have gone down that path as well...)

It's sort of true, though. I saw this the other day. At the 1:25 mark...

Wouldn't that make the fandom horny/creepy/sick rather than toxic?

Granted, I've seen plenty of toxicity come from it regardless.

Depends on your definition. Typing "toxic fandom" into google, this is the definition that pops up at the top of the screen:

"Toxic fandom is a buzzword that has been used in recent years by journalists, news outlets, and others to identify popular culture fans who engage in behaviors that are considered negative and unacceptable."

So if you consider enjoying bestiality negative and unacceptable, then yeah, parts of the community are pretty darn toxic.

So Xbox twitter just posted this and... it's got a few eyebrows raised.

    https://twitter.com/Xbox/status/1508232467051864076

It looks just like a joke tweet at the Oscars right? Except... it has a rating watermark on the bottom left...

Suggesting it's from trailer footage but... What trailer footage?

Is this the a potential origins trailer? Or is it old trailer footage?

It could be from Origins, but at the same time I wouldn't read too much into it. It's a Sonic 2 meme, that's all that's important.

Oh yes, I completely understand and fully approve of Sonic 2 being used to slightly dunk on the OSCARS.

But... The fact it's a video and not a twitter gif as well as the ESRB rating on it suggests it's from a media library on the social media side, and they wouldn't put a rating on it would they?

Yeah, the rating is very intriguing. Thing is, even it being from a potential Origins trailer doesn’t really explain things, so I wouldn’t read too much into it personally.

Worth remembering Sonic 2 is available to buy on Xbox, and given the similar name for the upcoming film...

The subject of the rating, someone has mentioned to me that "Because Microsoft is in part a games platform distributor, they have to post ratings on all video containing game footage."

That could maybe explain it but... It's very hard to verify on the twitter account itself since it's mostly trailer clips.

As far as I can tell, it appears to be a recording of the 2013 version, but it's very heavily edited to force Sonic in the center of the shot.

The version on the Xbox store is the MD version, not 2013.

Hmm, so it matches up to the 2013 version which only released on mobile, but has been posted by an official Xbox Twitter account? Very interesting - wonder why they'd have footage of that version specifically...?

This detail, combined with the weird ESRB rating overlay, makes me wonder if this could be our first proper hint that Origins may use the existing Whitehead/Headcannon remakes for Sonic 1/2/CD? I know quite a few people were hoping this would be the case - if so, presumably the Xbox Twitter account has used this footage in this tweet before they're technically supposed to have released it? Guess all we can do is wait and see either way, but it's interesting to speculate.

I'd be really happy if this turns out to be the case - particularly if split-screen multiplayer has been reimplemented for Sonic 2, as I'd love to do some local VS. play with the expanded multiplayer options the mobile version had. If they really are reusing the existing remakes, though, then I just hope that Sonic 3 & Knuckles has been given the same level of care and attention...!

I really would be surprised to see any new content from Whitehead/Headcannon in this compilation. Bridges seemed to be burned a little after Mania's release.

When Origins Collection was first announced, Iizuka was asked if Christian Whitehead & co. were involved with it, and Iizuka was non-committal on an answer on that question.

So, if indeed Whitehead is involved, I do have to wonder whether they made a bigger push to involve Whitehead due to not expecting that question in the interview and realizing that's what people want.

Still, my gut feeling is that Taxman/Stealth are a no-show on this project, not necessarily by choice. However that doesn't preclude the Taxman versions of Sonic 1/2/CD being the versions released on the compilation.

Oh, absolutely. I'd be pleasantly surprised if they are directly involved, but my current expectation is SEGA using their existing remasters and making a widescreen Sonic 3 & Knuckles of their own to complete the set - hence my comment about hoping that game is given the care and attention it deserves, which I'd have no worries about if I knew Taxman and Stealth were onboard.

Admittedly my comment about adding split screen support probably muddied the waters, but I'd love for them to find a way if at all possible. Sonic 2 just wouldn't be Sonic 2 without local 2P VS!

Honestly, if SEGA got a license for the Mania fork of the engine (which I imagine is quite likely given it was also used for S1, 2 and CD) and the code is well documented, then I see no reason why they wouldn't be capable of at least clearing the bar of giving us a faithful Sonic 3 & Knuckles remake.
