Apparently it plays totally differently, where you have to line up columns (like uh...Columns) instead of the weird color grouping Bros had.
Oh hey, I see someone beat me to the punch with the Puzzle Construction twitter thread. I had hacked on the game a little while back, and did some more tonight. Basically all the graphics files are standard 8x8 Sega MD tiles with a 0x100 byte header of the color palette (3 bit RGB spread across three bytes). Posted some pictures here, including rips of the Sonic and Eggman art: https://twitter.com/suddendesu/status/1264153217568399360?s=20
Wow this is so interesting! Also, I just found this tweet. She claims she is the proginal composer for Marble Garden Zone and some bonus stage music from Sonic 3 (I guess it would be the gumball or maybe the magnetic balls bonus stage?) . Was this known before? https://twitter.com/soundforest1/status/451046640552382465?s=19
From MegaTech #13 - Sonic 2sday. All the stars were out in force: - half of Right Said Fred - Omar Lye-Fook, who had a #14 single once - Todd Carty, who played character Mark Fowler in Eastenders for 13 years - Cathy Dennis, because Sega were obsessed for some reason - There was a GamesMaster bit. Because of course there was. Party hard.
Interesting Fred was there. I wonder if he heard the song and thought "I could do far better than this"? =P
Masses of information have come through in the last 48 hours and wiki thumbnails are broken. Arg. Sega Power #22: Sonic Retro before Sonic Retro. Sega Power #33. This was the first official screenshot. I mean, you could have guessed that, but here's confirmation. Strictly speaking I'm not sure it was the first screenshot of Sonic 2 to be printed - one of the mags got some very blurry shots from Summer CES 1992 (aka the Nick Arcade build), but they weren't meant to do that and the quality was garbage anyway. Also I just noticed the extra cloud reflections.
Sega Zone #9 - that's the unaired AoStH pilot. Except flipped. And the footage we have has a building in the background. I've heard this BBC vs. video games thing in the past - the corporation saw video games as a threat to television, so tried to pretend they didn't exist. They also did this with films - towards thee end of its run, BBC One's Film XXXX was being aired at 11:30pm, when most of the country was in bed. God knows why. You can file it alongside "nobody is allowed to print the TV schedules except the Radio Times" which was in force for too long.
https://arbys.com/papercraft A fairly rudimentary printable Sonic papercraft is available courtesy of Arby's, for some reason.
Sega Pro #34 There was a period of time when the 32X was a known quantity, but Sonic & Knuckles was not. So obviously you needed a 32X to get to Flying Battery Zone in Sonic 3!.. or not. This is June 1993, Sonic 3 was released in February, so even in the days before the internet, people were able to find the level select and speculate.
I managed to get a hold of a clean copy of the ghost theme from Sonic: Night of the Werehog. https://twitter.com/AstroSeedP/status/1265719210468093954?s=20 MP3 for those that would want it: https://t.co/CiSZFOutUb?amp=1
Would be neat if we had any idea who on the social media team did the art for this. Neither the post on twitter nor the YouTube video's description list anyone.
Friend of mine threw these happy meal toys out recently, but not before taking these photos. The Knuckles one has a date of 2003 while the Big one has a date of 2004, which would make these too late for SA2 no? If so, why is Big on here? Also, I couldn't find any articles that had these on there. Maybe our search algorithm needs to be improved? (They are too big for this. Knuckles front, Knuckles back, Big front, Big back)
Wow, you're right. It was out at the end of 03 apparently. My sense of time with that game is skewed since I played it in my freshman year of HS, which was 05-06. Also (visibly sweats)
Category:LCD games Of course, these pages aren't entirely accurate. They're not inaccurate per se, but they don't reflect the 32478023948 countries which had Happy Meal runs. The nuances aren't documented well.
If it helps narrow down the date more, I once dated somebody who got a job at McDonald's within a week of our first date, which was March 27, 2004 (Sonic X Episode 26 aired in the US that day). She got me all those LCD games pretty soon after that. Pretty sure I still have them somewhere. During the promotion there was art of Sonic from the cover of SA2:Battle in McDonald's stores, but with classic sneakers instead of SOAPs. Too bad cell phone cams weren't common place yet.
