    Sonic... Pinball?

a.k.a. this is why catalogue scans are important.

Yes that's the old Jurassic Park cover art too. And Robocop vs. Terminator.

  2. Huh. The box says Sonic Pinball but the text beside it simply calls the game "SPIN BALL" (no "Sonic" at the start).

This isn't a reveal of info but more a curiosity. I was playing Sonic Adventure today and couldn't help but notice all the classic Robotnik design references (the Eggman logo, the Eggman plaques in Final Egg, the whack a mole Eggmen) and it made me wonder just how late in development did they redesign Eggman?

I always saw that as more of a design choice than a late redesign. Kind of like seeing the classic version of the characters in Casinopolis.

If anything, you could say that his 3D model in Adventure has in some ways literal elements of his sprite design. His weird mustache that curves around his face brings to mind the fact that his mustache is always visible from his sprites, which are from a side profile...

I'm certain Hisashi Eguchi's take on Eggman influenced the Adventure-onwards design (and to a lesser extent Sonic as well):

Note how his 'stache fans out at the tips, just like Modern Eggman; note also, the scrawnier arms and better defined shoulders.

I get the impression the Modern redesigns were the result of wanting extremes for the characters but with a lacking ability to satisfactorily apply the other animation principles they just decided to have them all permanently exaggerated. (or not; though it'd explain those stretching effects found in the Sonic World portion of Sonic Jam).

Special thanks to Tongara who has highlighted the source.

I really need an army of people to come in and mirror all of the relevant videos on (Sonic/Sega) Retro (CDN).

There is a lot to digest. For example:

    https://archive.org/details/k-project

Rez back when it was still "K Project".

    https://archive.org/details/014268

Metropolis Street Racer, back when it looked awful.

    https://archive.org/details/012193

X-Women, back when they thought they might actually release it.

    Make it so... Retro

In the Sonic Screensaver executable SCRNSVR.EXE, some of the debug error messages contain
    Code (Text):
    1. (^.^)
and another emoji I can't seem to use because of the IPB board emoji glitch :argh:

    Thought that was neat.

Was looking for something totally different and spotted this:

Sonic Chaos doesn't really have a story. It's basically "Sonic 3 but not really" - you're not meant to think about it.

But Sega of America had a plan once:

Surely the nuclear lasers would fit better in Atomic Destroyer from the sequel? ;)

Need some hints on French television:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqur-6C7r1M

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIJNZXDyJd8

It's looking like Sega (or at least Sonic 2) sponsored the TV channel Canal+ in 1992. These two videos have been on YouTube for a while.

But what are they? Why do they say "Pub+" - is it to signal the start of an advertisement break ("publicité"), or was it a programme? (or a block of programming?)

It's a bit of a challenge to find information on this, given that Canal+ is huge (and "canal" is French for "channel").

The Mysterious Sonic Statue is gaining some traction!

Hopefully it gets some traction within SoJ, though it'll probably mean them putting some legwork into finding out who DOES own the thing.

    Quick(?) one:

Did we ever work out what sort of car this was? Assuming it's not fictional (that's a big assumption).

    It's a Lotus Super Seven.

Yasushi Yamaguchi decided to give Tails a favourite car when he heard internally at Sega that Sonic's favourite car was the Lamborghini Countach.

It showed up in this Saturn test disc as well:

Tails also drives a Lotus Super Seven in the Koichi Tanaka's Sonic manga, published in Bessatsu CoroCoro Comic Special. It later inspired Tails' fictional vehicles in Sonic Drift, Sonic Drift 2 and Team Sonic Racing.

As for Sonic and the Lamborghini Countach...
