Was on the bus today and I noticed something I haven't before - Chaos has a recurring drum in the Adventure soundtrack. It's not too special but perhaps noteworthy.

    Life.
  3. I've read somewhere that they actually played "Emerald Coast" music there in the lobby and the hotels were lined up very similar to the game.

I don't think this case matches this cartridge.... is this the same box as the wai proto? It has screens of MZ on there... http://m.ebay.com.au/itm/Sonic-The-Hedgehog-2-Sega-Mega-Drive-Boxed-Aus-Seller-FREE-POST-/191819191345?nav=SEARCH

Oops, I guess I've never mentioned that I noticed this XD I live on the "Gold Coast" (Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and Palm Beach), and I can tell you that we never refer to ourselves as "coasts." It's just like southeast Florida, central Florida, Panhandle, really far Panhandle, etc. Maybe other places refer to themselves as "coasts," but where I'm from we don't really.

I've never been to the beach in that area, but I have actually heard that Emerald Coast from SA1 is based off of that area, which is definitely pretty cool.

I've been to that area and those beaches. I've never really thought about it, but Emerald Coast from Sonic Adventure does look like a lot of the beaches/coasts there. Minus the loop de loops and stuff.

Edit: Especially the beginning of the level, with the hotels on the side of the beach. Looks just like a lot of the beaches on the real Emerald Coast.

Emerald Hill was named after a real place too.

The Simon Wai ROM was distributed around and likely packaged in different ways with whatever the pirates could get their hands on. You could probably source everything to issues of EGM or GamePro or whatever.

This variant has been spotted before, but it's not up on the wiki because nobody's put up a list of Sonic bootlegs (it would be lovely if I didn't have to do it)

It's more coincidental, but there's a Station Square in Pittsburgh that checks a lot of the boxes. Train, by the water, kinda sorta laid out similarly to the playable areas, drivers that don't know what they're doing, etc. Sadly the casino is a bit farther away, but there were even "Mystic Ruin" machines in it. Closest I'll ever get to that dumb childhood dream of visiting the Station Square from the game.

My game with an extremely long name!
For what it's worth, there's a Green Hill and Emerald Hill here in Australia. Now I feel like going to Emerald Coast.

We've got a street on the way out of town called Hill Top. People bought and sold, uh, medicinal herbs there several years ago.

I used to live near a city that had a Green Hill Park, unfortunately I never went.

I live on a street called Hill Top. And it's bizarrely unrelated to that, but the high school on the other side of town USED to be on top of another hill, and so all of its sports teams are the "HIllToppers."

I think Hill Top is a very common name for a street, since there's one in my city too. I don't live on it, and I'm not too close to it though my sister had a friend who lived on the street as a kid and I remember pointing out the fact that the name of the street is Hill Top just like the level in Sonic 2. :v:

I live right beside Green Hill. I was almost able to steal a street sign with the name on it, as it was knocked over in a storm. Unfortunately by the time I got around to it, it was gone and a replacement was up later that week.

Oh there's a whole bunch of curious trademarks and patents out there that need documenting on Sega Retro

    https://www.google.co.uk/search?tbo=P&tbm=pts&hl=en&q=inassignee:%22Sega+Enterprises,+Ltd.%22&gws_rd=cr&ei=0djdVsKCAob4UN_ar6gB#q=inassignee:%22Sega+Enterprises,+Ltd.%22&hl=en&tbm=pts&start=0

I've so far only bothered with this Saturn patent - there are plenty more and I'm all up for elegant solutions for displaying them.

You also have game design patents - one of them is the formula behind Crazy Taxi (which was actually (in)famously used against The Simpsons: Road Rage).

  17. I found this print ad:

I don't know how to add an image. I tried the image option, but it didn't show.

Nothing to get particularly excited about, but a re-scan of EGM #22 has given us some slightly higher resolution shots of prototype Sonic 1

(might take the wiki some time to generate better thumbnails - if they've still got Megacosm watermarks from decades ago, leave it a few hours)

Thought of the day - was Clock Ork Zone blue?

I always assumed it was the magazine's fault, but if you apply a bit of colour correction, every zone's palette looks like the final except that one.

The Master System and Game Gear interpretations are more blue too.

Shay knocked it out of the park with his Sonic Spitball finale. Some of his ideas are so close to my own wishes, it gives me hope some of these aspects may be a shared intention of some members of Sonic Team to pursue as well.

I had to look, and you are right, that is an awesome Eggman running animation indeed!
