Always wondered how to get the Amy/Tails/Knuckles chao on the GC without cheats? We know you can get a Tails chao with PSO EP 1&2, but did you know you could get all three with a special demo disc that was around during the time of Sonic Adventure DX?

The Interactive Disc Catalog Summer 2003, which was released in Japan, contains an extra bonus along with a demo of Sonic Adventure DX, Viewtiful Joe, and a demo of Made in Wario (which runs like the GBA Player). This extra also allows you to transfer a Puyo Pop game or a Chu Chu Rocket game to your GBA. The chao are sent to your Tiny Chao Garden where you can transfer them back to your gardens in the Adventure games.

    Here are some shots:

Oh wow. This I had absolutely no idea of. Around 2003/4 I hung out at Chao Island a lot. They had nothing about this. I think this info was probably lost to the masses, and all people really know about nowadays is the Tails Chao. Thanks for bringing this forward.

    Has the disc been ripped?

I assume so, since those are clearly emulator shots.

The disc contains a file game.zip, which contains among other things an nport folder, with the three demos (change extension to .mb for emulators):
    • ChaoGC.bin: Tiny Chao Garden
    • Chu2PuzzleJP.bin: ChuChu Rocket
    • toko.bin: Puyo Puyo
However, if you load up the Tiny Chao Garden, it just gives you an ordinary Chao. So I took it upon myself to get the three Chao dumped. It took a bit of doing, but I finally managed to connect Dolphin to VBA-M and suffer the horrendously slow GBA BIOS three times and ripped the resulting data from the GBA's WRAM (I had to change the first byte from 36 to 2E for some reason).

So here's the three Chao as multiboot ROMs (A = Amy, T = Tails, K = Knuckles) along with the default one for comparison. The modified ones all start you with 1000 rings for some reason as well.

Interestingly, although it uses SA2B's GSBJ game code, it's actually version 2 of the Tiny Chao Garden, with Sonic Advance 2's Chao Bounce minigame.

Oh that's incredible, I had no idea it existed. Wish I could get my hands on a disc and a Freeloader easily and cheaply.

Wow, that is FASCINATING. I had no idea! What I did know was that the disc came out in the US! The menu looks like any US kiosk's demo disc, and I remember getting it from Target around June 2003 for something like $10. It had demos for Viewtiful Joe, SADX, Billy Hatcher, and you could transfer WarioWare and a few other goodies. But alas, no Chao.

I still have that, but unboxed. eBay has one at a $10 bid (plus $8 shipping) and $60 Buy It Now.

xD I lost it at "Remotely Piloted Vehicle". Also what the hell is up with using Sonic 3 Zone names as video game titles? :v:
Also ha I knew it it's Hydro City zone not a play on words for "Hydrossity!" xP

I guess this is the second prototype level order we had never heard about.

I found 2 weird things in Sonic Adventure a while ago. When playing as Sonic, I did a Spindash, and hit some Flicky that stopped me dead and made me fall on my butt. If I had to guess, it was somewhere in Speed Highway.

Also, in Amy's Twinkle Park, the shield you can get doesn't have a reflection. Only the "real" Amy has it. The way the camera is, sometimes it focuses on one of Amy's reflections instead of on Amy.

Did you know the grind tricks in Sonic Adventure 2 are real tricks with names?

This one is called an AO Soul. The AO stands for "Alley-Oop", meaning the grind is facing backwards.

This one is called an AO Miszou. Again, it's the backwards-sliding version of the Miszou grind.

This one is called a Royale. The non-crouch version could be called a frontside, but since the feet are torqued, I'd say that it's more like a less-crouched royale grind.

Interesting stuff! It's a shame that all the effort gone into making grinding an interesting and deep mechanic in SA2 was lost come the next game and all future instalments.

It was certainly more interesting in SA2 than Sonic "let's twist around like idiots" Heroes.
