Nothing seems to appear on a search….

Yet another Escapist reviewer shares a video about popular blue gaming mascots. Though this one is more constructive than angry.

Speaking of Korean Dr. Robotnik's... If I remember correctly, at least in Sonic Classics, the Korean name next to "Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine" actually reads "Puyo Puyo" instead.

I thought it was odd, but it would make at least a bit of sense if Twimfy is right.

EDIT: Hey, turns out the regular Korean release also has "(Puyo Puyo)" next to the game's real name. <a href="http://info.sonicretro.org/File:DRMBM_MD_KR_Box.jpg" target="_blank">Wiki link.</a>

Ok that makes even more sense. It's weird my copy of Mean Bean Machine has a manual, sleeve and sticker but the game is 100% Puyo Puyo and yet my friends is Mean Bean Machine through and through.

Sad thing is, Koreans do not give a fuck about Retro gaming so I guess we'll never find out for sure.

Not sure if it's been said before, but...

Mess around with the "Y" button while fighting the Egg Walker in the XBLA version of SADX. I don't know if this works for GC or PC, though.

Essentially, you can control what the Egg Walker does to a certain degree. I made the Egg Walker follow me on my command and kept it from using its attacks by pressing "Y" repeatedly.

    Kinda weird.

This definitely works on the PC version when you press the Whistle key (S).

I was gonna test it on the PC version, but Main beat me to it. Well, that sure seems weird. Reminds me of the code that puts Sonic on a board in Metal Harbor if you press Y on the second controller.

Anyway, another fun fact, which I added to the wiki some hours ago. In the original games, if you collect a ring, it'll play a sound effect on the left speaker. Collect another one and it'll play on the right. Then on the left. etc. I don't know for sure which games have and don't have this detail, but I wrote a list <a href="http://info.sonicretro.org/Talk:Ring" target="_blank">here</a> for people to contribute.
Oh, and just as I was about to post this, Nineko brought to my attention that there are 2 different sounds, with different durations, for each speaker.

Sonic 3D has two ring sounds. One of them alternates between FM channels 4 and 5, the other one sticks in FM channel 5 (like most SFXs). I should check S3K, since Sonic 3D shamelessly took every single sound effect from there (even in the same order, and in fact even with the same number IDs internally), and just replaced a few (for flickies and such).

...I thought that one-side ring effect has been there since Sonic 1?

EDIT: Yep, sound #CE. Perhaps it's used for the Ring monitor?

EDIT: Yep, sound #CE. Perhaps it's used for the Ring monitor?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->No. There are two ring sfxs in Sonic 1, 2, 3, K, 3D, and both of them are mono per se, one on FM4 (which is panned to the left) and one on FM5 (which is panned to the right). For example, in Sonic 1, sfx $B5 is the right ring, which plays on FM5, and $CE is the left ring, which plays on FM4. In theory. In practice, there's a code which seamlessly alternates between $B5 and $CE if you play sfx $B5:
    Code (Text):
    1. Sound_A0toCF:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;; XREF: Sound_ChkValue
    2. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;tst.b&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;$27(a6)
    3. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;bne.w&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;loc_722C6
    4. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;tst.b&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;4(a6)
    5. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;bne.w&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;loc_722C6
    6. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;tst.b&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;$24(a6)
    7. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;bne.w&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;loc_722C6
    8. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;cmpi.b&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;#$B5,d7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;; is ring sound&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;effect played?
    9. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;bne.s&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Sound_notB5; if not, branch
    10. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;tst.b&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;$2B(a6)
    11. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;bne.s&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;loc_721EE
    12. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;move.b&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;#$CE,d7&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;; play ring sound in left speaker
Without that code, the "real" $B5 would always play, always to the right.

The trivia is that <a href="http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=8815&view=findpost&p=357041" target="_blank">$B5 is one time unit longer than $CE in Sonic 1 and in Sonic 2</a> (even though that's barely noticeable), but it was fixed in Sonic 3 (not sure about 3D).

Sonic 3D outright steals the sound effects from Sonic 3 (like I said, internally they even have the same numbers), so it's probably exactly the same.

In my years of playing Sonic 2 I've found 2 shortcuts in Wing Fortress Zone, the first being one I don't think I've seen anyone use before. When combined they allow you skip all the bottomless pits and easily go straight to the boss.<!--id1--><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/PczMwyxam0o&"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/PczMwyxam0o&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object><!--id2-->
The second one is more obvious but it unfortunately requires Super Sonic.

Sorry if these are common knowledge, but I don't recall anyone using both shortcuts to beat the level this easily.

I have actually always used the 1st one. The second one looks like you just jumped over everything...

I also love using the Super Sparkle bug!!

I'd be surprised if people don't usually take that route. I've barely used the annoying path with the bottomless pits since '92.

I'm surprised I haven't seen many people use that shortcut now that I see you guys already know about it. I thought that I'd be sharing something new while adding to this topic. :flunked:
Still I do find it to be an interesting way to beat the level quickly and easily.

I used the first shortcut since like the first time I ever played the level... Now thank you for making me feel like an idiot for that second shortcut =/
