I’m pretty sure any depiction of Earth that’s not just a background object in a game is going to be the Unleashed one from now on. I really don’t think it actually means anything that the continents don’t line up in the background of cutscenes or whatever. Not even worth worrying about IMO.
Since the mountain from Spinball is in the ocean in Origins I get the feeling Mobius being another planet isn’t a thing anymore. I always kinda wanted to ask Ian about that, but not enough to pay money for it.

I can’t remember what any relevant text in Origins says, but it has been said on the BumbleKast that, while Spinball itself is canon, the presence of the Freedom Fighters isn’t canon, so it’s more like a version of Spinball is canon. On that logic, I’d wager that the mountain is no longer called Mount Mobius either.

I heard the exact opposite, that Flynn argued that the canonical presence of the FFs in Spinball should be a reason to introduce them into more material, but that SEGA just wasn't interested anyway.

Either way, I don't think it would be nearly as contentious for the mountain to still be named Mobius, so it's not a great argument in my eyes.

Canonical presence? They were literally two-second cameos in the bonus pinball minigame. They didn't even get a mention in the manual. Freakin' Nights has had more of a "presence" in Sonic games than them.

I've mentioned this over in the Headcanon thread, but I personally think Mobius should be a planet inside Subspace, where Fang comes from according to Sonic Triple Trouble and where the Flickies frequent according to Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island.

With those two details, there's something habitable there, and it would be a good place to store all the old western characters out of the way, yet canonically included.

Yeah. Regardless of your feeling on the planet's name, the name of a mountain is irrelevant to it. We don't live on planet Everest.

The planet's still Mobius and you cannot change my mind

To be fair, they can also rename the mountain, since they're throwing out manuals. Mt. Eggman, here we come!

Yeah but they had sensible reasons to do that. The name of one mountain they're never visiting again probably doesn't make much difference.

The place is named Mt. Mobius, which SEGA were at one point distancing themselves from, but I figure they'd have done it by now if they would. Also, I'm pretty sure they can't go back to it anyway since the Veg-o-Fortress, and Mt. Mobius by proxy, sank beneath the waves.

Well yeah that *was* Flynn's argument, but ultimately the FF are non-canon regardless.

Yeah but you need to consider why they were doing that. They don't want the planet to be Mobius and the characters to be Mobians, they want the planet to be Earth and the characters to be...uh...[ ]. Mobius as a name for a planet, a name that defines the species of every major character, is something they'd have concern with. Mobius as a name for a mountain they're never revisiting is a lot harder to worry about.
Well, no, they're canonically not in anything except Spinball. I don't think there's been any evidence stating that their existence within that canonical game literally didn't happen. It's not like the Kukkus aren't canon just because they have no presence outside yes-canon game Tails Adventure.

Which is weird because they went ahead and had another planet named Mobius in internal documents anyway. Also, I think the mountain was only called Mt. Mobius in the English manual.

That's assuming that their cameo was ever canon to Spinball to begin with. As opposed to being, you know, just a meaningless small cameo. Not unlike Nights in later games, or Mighty, Ray and Fang in Generations, or Cream in SADX.

The FF aren't part of the story in Spinball, and only make an appearance in a minigame in which Sonic is playing a pinball machine, within said machine. If we take that as canon, then I guess they're canonically around 2 inches tall. You may as well take Nights as canon, as there is no evidence that they're not. And I guess Chris Thorndyke must be canon too, due to making a cameo appearance in a signpost in SADX's mission mode?

The Kukkus, on the other hand, were actual characters in their game's story - and major ones at that.

Something about mt. mobius I find interesting is that an eggman island base was a somewhat recurring thing in the classic series; Eggman is seen in a mountain island base off the coast of a city in the "hero for a day" cartoon in sonic jam, and little planet was chained to a mountain with eggman's face in the ending of sonic cd.
I could see the original intent to be that "Mt. Mobius", or whatever it was called, was supposed to be eggman's permanent island base. Then sometime in adventure they changed it so he just lives in his ship fleet or where ever. I'm actually quite fond of the egg-mountain base, it has a very james bond-esque villainy to it, and there are really that many locations in the series where you can definitively say "this character lives here"

You should also include that Tails is amongst those in the pinball machine minigame, but we see him in the intro flying off after Sonic is blown off the...whatever that is, a glider?... and then Tails later returns in that same vehicle to catch Sonic as he's falling, so very much unlikely to have been captured in the Veg-o-Fortress.

Robotnik's base was shown being on top of a mountain all the way back in Sonic 1:

Considering his preference towards airships, it's probably the best place for Robotnik to set up so there's lower risk of said airships hitting the ground while docking.

Interesting! There's lots of interesting stuff in the 8-bit games, shame they don't get more attention.
This can't be the same mountain since it doesn't have his face on it, but it's neat to think they had this idea for his character planned out so early on.

Here's something that came up in the SA2 character thread and then the movie thread.

But why were GUN after Sonic in SA2? So here's the timeline:
-Eggman attacks Prison Island and releases Shadow.
-Shadow defeats Hot Shot and escapes.
    -G.U.N. captures Sonic.
-Sonic escapes, leading to an all-day chase.
-Shadow reaches the city at night, breaks into a government-owned bank, and steals a Chaos Emerald.
    -Shadow is pursued by authorities.
    -Sonic and Shadow cross paths.
    -Sonic is captured again.
-During a cutscene, Tails mentions that news reports accuse Sonic of destroying a military facility (Eggman and Shadow's earlier actions) and robbing a bank (Shadow's Radical Highway chase). In both the English and Japanese recaps, Sonic states that G.U.N. troops accused him of deserting a military facility before arresting him the first time.

But the wrinkle is, was SA2' story operating under the idea that present day GUN did not not know Shadow was sealed on Prison Island so they did think it was Sonic attacking them? Or if not why were they after Sonic?

From what we saw about GUN in the game, and then some of the extra material I walked away as seeing GUN as a corrupt organization trying to keep a lid on the situation and framing Sonic.

So they viewed him as collateral damage in their attempt to keep their involvement in Project Shadow and the massacre on the Ark a secret. Especially because the current president hired Rouge as a spy since he didn't seem to trust them.

Because I get the average GUN soldier not knowing about Project Shadow, but did no one really know about the project in the upper ranks?

Did they see Sonic as a threat before SA2 so they used the events as an excuse to go after him and kill two birds with one stone?

But there's not enough meat on the story to justify that.

Then Shadow The Hedgehog comes along and introduces Abe which complicates things more. Was he on vacation that week so he didn't get a chance to tell everyone in GUN it was actually Shadow and not Sonic?

Was he going through a case of Amyvitis and also thought Shadow was Sonic?

What does everyone think? Am I missing something that explains what went down?
