Not sure if this has been addressed, but does South Island still move across the ocean or sinks without the emeralds? Was thinking about that, because despite Sega trying to push Green Hill as Sonic's iconic location we don't really see much of the rest of the island. As in we haven't seen locations like the city (or cities?) from Spring Yard/Star Light zone or the ruins from Marble/Labyrinth zone for a while. If it still floats across the ocean then how do Sonic and friends find it again? I'm assuming the sinking aspect of it has been retconned since the emeralds have been off island for a while. If it doesn't float, does that mean that the island is close to places like the United Federations and Prison Island because that's how it was depicted in the SA2 map? Again, find it odd that we haven't seen the island again in story driven media like IDW, other than prime or the movie that just shows Green Hill.
Where does it state that the island sinks without the Chaos Emeralds? As best I understood, it was only theorized that it's floating around the ocean was "somehow connected" to the Chaos Emeralds. If that is the case then the burst of energy they released at the end of Sonic 1 could easily account for why it doesn't. I wouldn't be surprised if this detail of South Island doesn't exist in the new paradigm.
The whole sinking plot point in Chaos never made sense and was never shown in the actual game itself so I can’t say I’m bothered that it’s been (presumably) retconned.
Ah ok, I was only aware of what was established in Sonic 1. In this case, I would say this is something the lore team might choose to write out.
South Island is probably under the sea? AND IT TOOK GREEN HILL WITH IT!? GREEN HILL IS DEAD! FUCKING YES! FINALLY!
Then Green Hill emerged from the ocean and scattered in pieces that all attached themselves into different landmasses. There's a little bit of Green Hill in every country now
I'd still personally just have it that Robotnik's shenanigans in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-Bit) damaged the island, and the Chaos Emeralds were repairing it. Man created a fantasy world with Sleeping Egg Zone and mechanised Green Hill Zone in Sonic Chaos alone, so his antics causing so much damage the island needs fixing isn't outside the realm of possibility. But alas, Lore Team's choice.
@Linkabel Ian’s repeatedly said not to take level select/world maps at face value, which I think is very reasonable given the myriad glaring inconsistencies between them. A Fantasy Zone, if you will.

I feel that "their" in the wording is a bit ambiguous. It's not clear to me whether the Chao garden in question belongs to Vanilla and Cream, or to the Chao themselves.
Well, that explains why Ian was saying he knew the “how” but not the “why of the how” about Silver’s time travel method. I can’t blame Sonic Team for going with the simplest method, but it really does just open up a ton of questions. Why do the portals appear? Is some higher force making them appear and if so who/what are they? Are the Chaos Emeralds causing it like when they cause Sonic to teleport to Blaze’s dimension? Is Silver aware of how/why this happens? The answer of course is “don’t worry about it,” but it does make one curious.
My mind jumps to the genesis portals from post-reboot Archie. There have been a number of cosmic events in the Sonic series, all they'd really need to do is pick one to tie the portals to.
Archie's Robotnik screwed up so bad, shards of the Archie Multiverse are ripping holes in the Game Universe...
In the comics they did save a bunch of Chao from Clutch so it might be a reference to them taking care of all those Chao after that story arc.
I find it odd that they keep bringing up 06 and the fact it excised itself from canon when it'd be so much easier to just...not.
I think they do have to address 06 because that is Silver's first appearance and everyone on Twitter still thinks Blaze is from the future.
