It's called Story Mode, it's presented in story order. Sonic CD's new animation outro foreshadows Sonic 2. That is the official sequence of events.

It's a story mode, so why would they make this one exception for Sonic CD? Anyways, if you don't want to believe Origins, the Encyclo-speed-ia, and Speed Strats then here's Ian Flynn confirming that CD takes place before S2.

The second card Amy flips is Tails' tails. They're fortune telling cards.

Ian Flynn was overruled, so it wasn't done. SEGA maintained it an interquel.

That's jumping to conclusions, since the Tornado doesn't have that update. It'd be like them randomly foreshadowing Shadow the Hedgehog with the cards.

Technically, it can be anywhere in the series. But you know I mean interquel between Sonic the Hedgehog (Mega Drive) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Mega Drive), and used interquel for shorthand since it wasn't post-Sonic the Hedgehog 3, thus not a sequential event.

    @Rafa Stary what original vision?
I don't think they cared about continuity or timeline placement at the time, the franchise was yet too young.
Two different teams created two different games at around the same time, in different countries, that's all.
Any talks of continuity apparently came after S3K, so by then they already had more ground to tread nicely.
Origins may be the best solution, for now, to that conundrum...

In this case I shouldn’t have to follow an unofficial podcast to get that information which may or not be canon, it should be presented in an official capacity. Preferably in a game but any supplementary material would be enough.

Since CD has time travel how do we know that CD takes place at the same time chronologically for both Sonic and Robotnik? CD happens before s2 from sonic's perspective but it's possible that Robotnik and metal sonic are actually from a post s3k time. Ian has stated he likes the idea of CD after s3k with Robotnik time traveling in CD to undo various defeats, since he's now part of the lore team I could see them agreeing on this compromise. Also it makes more sense for Robotnik to go back and try to defeat sonic before the death egg saga cause then he'd then stop sonic from blowing it out of orbit in s2.

I think it's pretty clear that CD takes place between 1 and 2 according to Origins, otherwise it wouldn't be happening... well... in between Sonic 1 and 2 in the story mode in the first place. Even if they were not foreshadowing Tails, there is no other way to interpret it unless you actually ignore what's being shown

They've been codifying the current canon in Tails Tube, the IDW comics, and recent releases like Sonic Origins and Sonic Frontiers.

Ian sometimes gives us small peaks behind the curtain. Which is exactly what this website was built on: acquiring information about the creative process and what was going on behind the series.

  15. I think the people here know its official placement, they just don’t like it. I mean Origins is what reignited this whole discussion in the first place.

I’ve always swayed towards team pre-2 btw. While post-3 also makes sense, it’s not hard for me to accept that Eggman made a lamer “Metal Sonic” after CD’s. I mean, Mecha is clearly trying to be more combat-focused than Metal, and he did end up refining the concept for the 3rd game (and Knuckles).

I guess I don’t really care either way. The stories don’t really conflict no matter where you place it outside of between 2 and 3. Placing it pre-2 just allows for a better gameplay progression which is why I imagine it being there. Ohshima saying it’s after 2 has some sway on me, but it’s not like he was involved in the creation of 3, so it’s hard to just say, “authorial/directorial intent,” and close it there. If Ohshima had said, “Oh it’s after the sequel to 2,” that’d be different IMO.

Even if you place CD after S3K, Mecha Sonic mk3 in SA1 implies that Eggy kept making Mecha Sonics after Metal.

I honestly don't see the issue. Eggman was implied to consider Metal Sonic a failure by the fact he stopped deploying him and kept him in storage in the Dreamcast era. That was why Metal rebelled in Heroes. It makes sense that Eggman would keep trying to build the perfect robot Sonic.

The manuals established a continuity as they went but that doesn’t mean they were planned out that way. The Sonic CD team and Sonic 2 team had little to no contact with each other and didn’t reference the manual plot of Sonic 1. I’m sure they were meant to happen after it but aside from that there wasn’t much connective plot tissue. Sonic 2 talks features the chaos emeralds but talks about them almost as if they’re something unique to Westside Island. Sonic CD was also not meant to come out after Sonic 2, hence the “see you next game” screen with Tails.

Any placement of Sonic CD after Sonic 3 was decided well after the game was developed, and for a long time it doesn’ seem like there was a specific placement decided on until Sonic 4 Episode 2, which Sega changed their mind about (and even at the time they didn’t announce it publicly iirc).

Even if it wasn't before, it's now pretty clear that CD takes place between first and second Sonic game. Origins pretty much confirms that.

It's fine if people don't like it, headcanons exist for a reason in fandoms, but you can't argue with facts.

I think the point was that they were trying to figure it out with pre-Sonic Origins evidence, since some of us really do not like the story changes being forced upon us with that game so are just ignoring it entirely.
