  1. I mean, if they aren't hiring for one it seems they should have someone dedicated for that purpose.

It's here, at the 1:38 mark:

Q: what happened to all the super emeralds
A: yeah it's still in the another dimension

Sounds like something he made up on the spot to give an answer. Every time he's asked about the Super Emeralds or Hyper Sonic he gives a different response.

I feel like every interview, there's something new he makes up on the spot that only further screws the Sonic lore.

The last time Iizukia talked about the Super Emeralds, he said this:

Q: What happened to all of the Super Emeralds?
Iizuka: The Super Emeralds really only existed in the Sonic & Knuckles game and that's the only place they're going to exist in the Modern versions of Sonic the Hedgehog we have now.
Hoshino: They're gone. I don't know how it happened, but they're gone.

So having them in another dimension isn't too far off that answer.

Personally, I think the Super Emeralds are "sealed canon". Basically, they aren't part of the canon going forwards and are never going to be seen again (Christian Whitehead has talked about how he planned them for Mania, but wasn't allowed, which suggests they have been dropped).
But Sonic Team doesn't want to erase them from Sonic 3 & Knuckles. So they've written them off as being in another dimension. That way, they can be dropped from canon but still remain in past canon.

I'm pretty sure Iizuka claimed at least once that they (Sonic Team) view the Super Emeralds as just a gameplay mechanic, a bonus to further justify playing the locked on game, rather than part of Sonic canon.

    I wonder...
How would SA2 have turned out if Sonic Team had kept SA1's style of storytelling.

Every story would last 30 minutes because of all the unique levels

Iizuka did say this back in 2013 (at the 19:40 mark):

"So Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles had...the lock-on, and...for people who played Sonic 3 the first time, they went through and they collected all the emeralds, right? ...So you already played Sonic 3 and you go to play Sonic & Knuckles, you've gotta have more emeralds to collect...and we put the Super Emeralds right there... Going forward, y'know, we also have...the Super Emeralds, the Master Emerald, and there's all these emeralds, and we've got too many, so when we released Sonic Adventure, we went back and just sort of cleaned up all the Emeralds and kind of reduced that down so we can have a little more control."

However, I don’t think that necessarily means the Super Emeralds are non-canon. He’s just giving a development explanation as to why they came into being and are no longer around.

As I said, I think they’ve been dropped and are now off-limits. Saying they are in another dimension seems like a good way of dropping them without erasing them out of Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

To this day I still think Iizuka just made up that explanation about the broken side of the moon being in the back after rotation.

Probably. I think he gave that answer on stage during a Q&A at Sonic Boom 2013, possibly just as a humorous "I don't know, lol, how about this?", but since we've never had a more serious answer given...

The two worlds thing was also something he made up in a hurry I believe.

I would love Ian to actually clean up the lore, even if he puts CD after 3&K, which is clearly wrong (I can understand his line of thinking, but i disagree with it lol :V)

Nah, the two worlds I think is a corporate thing. They decided that.

There was a point Flynn said the whole Two Worlds thing was inherited from Yuji Naka. I'm not sure if that was Iizuka's word or someone else along a chain, though.

I mean, what he proposed makes for a good story and I wouldn't mind it being used in another Classic Sonic story... but not Sonic the Hedgehog CD.

I like to think they had just totally forgotten they even blew up the moon in sa2 for the games that followed, which really, they probably did. I feel like a lot of the lore details we have are very much just answers given on the spot for things they honestly just havent even thought too hard about.

With that said, I really hope ian actually working on the games now means we can get some actual cohesion, and with the tails tube shorts, it seems like they are making an active effort to stitch things together and make sense of all these 30 years of games, which i can appreciate!

    Yup.
Well... Actually... Generations kinda did that in a way... didn't it? Eggman trying to erase his past mistakes.

But nowhere in Sonic CD it is indicated, that Eggy wants to do it. The focus is on little planet itself.

I would also like to point out that I really love Sonic CD as a concept (playing it, not so much). It gave us Toei Sonic, Metal Sonic; the original steel plated faker, and even the R2 enigma which is really fun to speculate about.

Indeed, which is also why I don't think it's weird Sonic doesn't remember that cutscene before the Death Egg Robot happening as Classic Sonic: they all indicate via dialogue that places seem familiar, such as Green Hill Zone and Chemical Plant Zone, after running through them.

Tails: "We've been to this place before, haven't we?"
    ...
Sonic: "You're right Tails, we've definitely been here once before."

To me, this indicates the reason Sonic doesn't remember his side is because it hasn't happened yet, until it does, because he's rebuilding the memories on both sides.

It's also why I disagree with the assessment it caused a timeline split.

    They're talking about Sonic 1 and 2.
