So, you never used the three Super Rings Monitors in the end of Death Egg Zone for your advantage? :ohdear:

Rolling doesn't help you speed up.

You do speed up when rolling downhill. Not nearly as much as you should, but you do speed up.

    >rolling down hills for extra speed

Rolling helps you speed up if you are in a descent, or if you know what you are doing... in the classic games, that is.

In Sonic 4, you just go slower.

    Edit: digitally duckage'd!

Actually, rolling just suffers from the same problem as jumping, unless you hold right, it won't go far. (Correct me if I'm wrong though, endri). Still, you can go fast with the roll, REALLY fast, I've seen people do it before. It may be fixed in the final build, because in the LLZ trailer you see sonic rolling down a slope and then up a slope REALLY fast, and everything looks to be at standard speed (AKA no sped up footage).

Every problem (and by "problem", I mean "inaccuracy to the originals") in Sonic 4's engine basically boils down to the fact that the friction/air resistance value used is about three times the value it should be. Fix that, and you have a fully functional classic engine.

EDIT: Obviously you'll need to fix the uncurling too.

Wow. So it's more or less that simple? Is that explained in the Sonic Physics Guide, or did you just drop that bomb right now?

I'm not sure if what he's saying or true, but it's not changing it that's the hard part, it's getting it tested and changing the level design to fix it. I doubt air resistance is the reason sonic can walk on walls, though.

What I don't understand is... Dimps made Sonic advance 1, right? Because, if you play Sonic advance 1, you'll realise the engine is pretty good.
So it would mean Dimps is actually able to make a decent engine.

Yeah, DIMPS are pretty awesome to be honest. I loved the Advance series, and the Rush series was good too. They can certainly make a sweet engine, but I have no idea why Sonic 4 has gone in the direction it has, especially when it's been dubbed as a return to 'classic' form. Nevertheless, it'll be a good game, but when you advertise something as classic in the way SEGA have, you expect it to mimic the designs of the classic series. That's what has gotten people's backs up. It's not annoyed me, rather just confused me. If I'd have expected Sonic 4 to be an updated continuation from the start(such as NEW Super Mario Bros.) then I would have instantly found less fault in the design direction, rather than comparing the previous instalments.

Sonic Advance seemed to also be a bit more lenient with the booster pads too, giving you them for short sections of speed, letting you explore the rest.

    I wish I knew...
Dimps actually did a great job with Sonic Advance, then they heavily fucked up with later games. Hey, the bosses were even in the 2nd act as well unlike future games.

  12. That reminds me, who did the music for Sonic Advance 1? I actually think it's more catchy than what's offered on Sonic 4, even though it has more limitations with the hardware!

Happy they replaced that lame 2nd pinball stage with something that uses flipping cards and blackjack (or something like that) as the level mechanic.

I never mind where the bosses go. Having it vary between games adds to the fun. In Sonic 1, you got three acts, in Sonic 2, you got two, so you expected more, only to be blown away by the sheer amount of zones, and by proxy, the bosses. I liked the inclusion of the mid-bosses in Sonic 3, and now Sonic 4 seems to have gone a step further than Sonic 1, which in itself is similar to the last classic game, Sonic 3D.
