  1. "BAH, they won't notice the small problems"
"They'll probably just make a few bare-minimum changes"

    To you I say...simply this:

    *histerical laughter*

They did notice the small problems. They changed the fucking running animation. If they changed that, then I'm sure they changed other "small nitpicks"

Wow, I haven't seen this many people on this thread in a while... even Ntom! I think I only saw you comment once a long, long time ago.

Anyway, I can't wait to see the new running animation... still, I'm afraid fans will still hate it :(

And what about big problems? Speed boosters & springs, snail roll, uncurling off ramps and StandOnHills the Hedgehog specifically. As brilliant as the updates shown today are, I won't be looking at the game as though those problem never existed.

They're trying very hard to please us, they're clearly putting in the effort. I bet you guys still have something bad to say about this update though don't you.

While I'm glad that they went and fixed a few things, (minecart section especially) I don't really think that they're going to bend much more to our whims. We were extremely lucky to get what we got now, much less the overhaul that the engine undoubtedly needs.

EDIT: Basically what Blue Blood said, yes.

  6. Well, one would a assume, that if someone noticed the small details, then they'd notice the big ones.
They've heard a few people complain about running animations, but they've probably heard millions of people complain about; Springs, boosters, uncurling. Some people mentioning more than once.

Of course this is a logical assumption.

We'll have to wait and see. I can tell they're only gonna start revealing stuff once its actually been implemented and they can prove it.

This all makes me wonder what the backlash would have been like if the game was released as it was originally.

All this update shows me is Dimps/Sonic team is willing to work hard to make changes. Do I think all speed pads will be removed? No. But I think many of them will. Do I think the physics will be just like the classics? No. But I really do think they will improve them. They're not showing that to us yet because then there'd be nothing to get excited about until release. This update just shows that they are working to change the game for the better, and that's enough for me.

Edit: Plus, to many people the mine cart was one of, if not the biggest problem in the game. Worse than the physics, worse than the speed pads. To most people, that was the absolute most terrible thing to ever be in a sonic game. So don't act like it was a "little thing", that caused the most uproar of ANYTHING in the leaks. Even more than physics.

The only real reference to physics changes that was evident to me was the touch of bump-up in time to get to blurry feet running. It's the small tip of a larger iceberg, and aside from the LLZ 2 revision, this list of changes seems, at best, cosmetic.

That, except for the difficulty part. There appeared an inference that there will be widespread difficulty changes. Not all of it will be revised downward, from what I gather. If it's less "dumbed down" and more in the name of balance, it's something else positive to take out of this.

I would hardly say this was very cosmetic. The only cosmetic thing was the running animation.

Are we forgetting the whole new act, the faster acceleration, and the difficulty balance? Only one tiny thing was cosmetic. Not most of it.

That's because people won't be happy till they state "we've redone the whole engine" which won't happen.

I've been following this saga with hyper-nostalgic interest and must concur that this latest update does show that SEGA are making the effort with this game. I remember watching the leaks with horror as I came up to the minecart level, now I'm more than satisfied.

To face facts, I'm getting this game whatever happens. It's some sort of inescapable fate for me to purchase this, having played Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles on their release days. Also, I love the Advance and Rush games; they were fun. In particular, despite the awful special stage entry method, Advance 2.

However, I would indeed welcome a return to the physics of old and my biggest issue thus far is the uncurling in mid-air. I used to love bouncing through a level (Emerald Hill Act 1 I believe achievable in a mental time frame using that method.) Here's a video of what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHo2hTQLBd8

Isn't that just awesome? That's the kind of thing I'd like to be able to do.

Overall, I approve of the attitude SEGA are taking with this game. They are listening to the vocal fanbase and acting upon the criticism. With this and Colours due before the year is out then 2010 is a very good year for Sonic, and I eagerly anticipate these releases. Not through the fan-duty of "OMGIMUSTHAVEIT!" but genuine anticipation of fun experiences.

Back to lurking for a bit.

I'm working on working up the willpower to work on learning how to make my own Sonic fangames. Not quite there yet.
As I understand it, people who played the leaked build found the Wall of Death sections in LLZ and MGZ more frustrating than challenging, so people who know what it's referencing will probably take that part in a positive light.

As for the physics, I wouldn't want them to mouth off about that until they provided some gameplay footage to back it. It's not exactly the kind of thing you can show off with screenshots.

Maybe I'm just too pessimistic about Sonic 4 for my own good.

I comprehended: "Now, you'll be able to trigger the blurry feet faster, and in a time frame more comparable to the classics."

as: "The acceleration is still the same, but we make your feet blurry at a lower speed."

In other words, I'm not seeing, "Sonic's acceleration = 4 m/s^2 when it was 2 m/s^2 before." I'm seeing "Sonic's acceleration is still 2 m/s^2 and you're seeing blurry feet when Sonic runs at 40 m/s when before you saw it when Sonic ran at 60 m/s."

The reason why I'm comprehending it this way is because of this: "and in some cases you'd be running at near maximum speed but wouldn't have the blur going on."

I'm not saying he runs slower. I'm saying that the acceleration and speed didn't get touched, but the run animations at different speeds did.

Am I wrong for thinking that?

Which directly contrasts what Ken Balough said. He said that acceleration had been improved specifically. I anticipate some footage to really confirm how the game has changed.

If they slowed sonic down I bet some of the level designs would be broken until they stick a boost in there to aid sonic :psyduck:

  19. I don't think his speed was touched. I never thought sonic was too slow or fast. It just took forever for his spinny feet to appear IMO.

He does take a bit too long to accelerate, mind. Which makes his ability to walk up hyper-steep surfaces all the more mystifying.
