Let me know if there is anything I should add to the Retro wiki.

  2. Could this be the cake drawing in question?

I stumbled upon this while scouring the web for AoSTH production material (because why must l̶o̶w̶l̶y̶ SatAM fans have all the fun?). According to the Tumblr post where I found this, this was used for the AoSTH episode "Sloww Going". I decided to see if any such scene where Sonic gets cake on him appears in the episode, and...

Look at that. Sonic's all caked up.

Personally, I don't see the "Japanese" in this concept drawing. Just looks like a slightly off-model drawing of DiC Sonic.

Thank you so much for putting together these resources! I was looking for a SatAM Bible/Production Guide on a whim and found these forums because of this post. I hope to put together limited color palettes for artist use from what you've provided. (I figure I'll be digging for Pantone codes for a while, though -- there's so much to go through!)

Preservation is a thankless job sometimes, so I want you to know it's appreciated. Thanks again!

I wasn't satisfied with any other recreations, so this is my attempt.

    Holy smokes, this is incredible!

That Sonic design with the vest and feminine eyelashes almost looks like a fusion between Sonic and Sally, while that Tails design is surprisingly faithful to Yamaguchi's style. Not sure how I feel about that stubby, pear-shaped Robotnik though.

However, what fascinates me most is that goblin-esque Snively design. I wonder if it has anything to do with the Fleetway comic's Grimer, as he was originally supposed to be Snively.

  7. Alex the Hedgefox tweeted some interesting documents. Kinda funny that this, of all the reasons, is why SatAM got cancelled. Obligatory call for mirroring onto the wiki.

I wonder how much of that topic came up when Shoichiro Irimajiri talked with the CEO of DiC while setting up Sonic Underground three years after SatAM ended—or Christmas Blast.

It also makes sense why there isn’t as much Underground production material compared to AoStH and SatAM.

From what it looks like there is actually a lot of stuff out there, but very little of it is actually physical since from what I can tell most of it was animated and mastered digitally? Like you have concept / Background art from the show and storyboards but there's no cels to be sold because they just don't exist.

Is the implication that SatAM was canceled due to Sega and DIC having a disagreement over ownership of the characters? If so that's amazing, hilarious and prescient all in one.

Yeah, I recognized this immediately upon seeing the sketch. I'd rent the VHS with this episode all the time from Hollywood Video when I was a kid.

Glad I got to respond to this a year and a half later, lol.

  11. It was apparently cancelled because SEGA caught DiC selling SatAM cels without their consent.

I've been under the impression that SatAM was canceled because ABC wanted more Power Rangers.

  13. That was a very common reason that I heard people cite. It doesn't really make sense when you take account of the fact that at the time, MMPR aired exclusively on Fox, not ABC.

Maybe he meant that ABC wanted something that could compete with Power Rangers? But then again they put the fucking Free Willy cartoon in SatAM's time slot after SatAM was pulled from the schedule completely, so maybe they didn't care about competition and just needed an excuse to kill off shows they didn't want.

Does anyone have information about the ending of the second season and the eyes of the character that appears at the end? I know that it was generally supposed to be Naugus, but apparently the team wanted to tease Knuckles – and it was Ben Hurst who took on the narrative, suggesting it was meant to be Naugus.

So... maybe there are some materials or details about this issue?

The reason I'd heard (from the complete series dvd) was that it was a bad time slot that was constantly getting pre-empted for sports, making it hard for interested audiences to watch the show at all, and especially disastrous with the serialized nature of s2. Replacing the show with something of relatively little concern would make sense for the time slot.

  18. There are many factors for why the show was cancelled. We all know the part about the Power Rangers, being pre-empted for sports and new people in charge of the network not seeing interest in renewing the show, thanks to that interview with Ben Hurst from the DVD. However, besides the unconsented selling of the animation cels (which funnily enough Ben Hurst was denying to be the case), the legal documents also seem to hint that Sega wasn't fond of the partnership between DiC and ABC during the show's run, which later led to ABC owning DiC (and that's before Disney bought ABC). It seems that Sega was suspecting DiC to enter the partnership with ABC on purpose, so it'd presumably solidify the show's production and broadcasting to become only possible through these two and in the event of Sega considering continuing production with someone else (like say, Saban, Hanna-Barbera, USA Network, etc.), they wouldn't be able to do so.

EDIT: I might've read something wrong as I can't find the exact quote in the document. It might've been something from a Twitter conversation between AlexHedgefox and someone else.
