I think its Sonic 1 you're thinking of plugging into Sonic & Knuckles to get to a special stage, Hybrid. And just to be stating it, that slot is also used to plug in a part that goes with the 32X. Its been so long since I tried to fix that old thing I forgot what that card that goes in that side slot does, but I THINK its got something to do with the graphics. I really can't remember, and I'm too lazy to look it up right now.
There are some games that will unlock a single Blue Sphere stage, but Sonic 1 allows to play them all.
More detail can be found about what each PIN corresponds to here. But yeah I must admit the post did make me laugh, just because of how it was presented in such a dramatic way yet was something that was so obvious, to me at least xD I think I might just say "So... the megadrive is a cartridge?" whenever someone tries to explain some technical hacking stuff to me to annoy them =P
I'm tempted to start one of those fake secrets, but no... Just make sure the 32x is plugged to the power line or you won't see the cool ;P
I'm planning on trying the 32X on top of S&K when I get home on Thursday. If it doesn't work, then I'll put Sonic 2 in the 32X and see if I still get Knuckles in Sonic 2. If I had a Sonic 3 cartage, I'd try that as well. But I don't think anything can beat the TOWER OF POWER

LOL ICEKNIGHT This is the largest I've done that I have a photo of that can legally boot (ie not S&K twice or cleaning carts or any of that shit (I could add a MCD1 and a 32X to this and it could still legitimitely work): Virtua Racing --> S&K --> Game Genie --> Honeybee region converter cart It should boot Blue Sphere but instead just refused to and ran S&K
I'm surprised that it loaded S&K at all rather than give a black screen the way it does, say, plugging in S3D.
Such towers aren't that healthy though, as the cartridges ALL have the power of those shiny little 10 volts with 2,1A or something. Too much and they'll not get enough POWAAAR leading to malfunction.
What I find surprising is that it fails when the total sum adds over 4MB when it only needs to read the first few bytes to define the Special Stage...
You can stack two S&K carts on top of each other, it doesn't make a difference. I tried the 32X on top of S&K thing, I got a green screen. It's kind of funny how it seemed to go through a series of colors before settling on green.
