Hey guys. Nice to be back after a while.

Sorry but I didn't know where else to put this.

My megadrive was having problems with graphics so I opened it up for a look:

See that red thing? It's a plastic cover that says DO NOT REMOVE.

    Guess what I did.

So, yeah. Protected by that cover is a how-ever many pinned card:

Have a close look at it, then at the bottom of one of your game cartridges.

It seems to be the same type of card. A quick try with the top of a 'Sonic & Knuckles' cartridge confirms this.

    So, what's it for?

That's so you can connect your Mega Drive to a Mega CD.

It's used to hook up the Sega/Mega CD to your Genesis/Mega Drive system.

I don't think it's used for anything else, really.

The connector covered by red plastic was connected to a MegaCD system so you could play MegaCD.

Damn, y'all beat me to it :argh:. Nevermind.

That was the expansion port. As stated several times above Sega (Mega) CD was the only thing that actually used it.
The problem is after a while the connection gets dirty causing the SMCD to crash.
With game carts you can simply stick them in and remove them a few times but with this it's not practical.
I disconnected the CD and play those in Kega now.

I lol'ed so hard. It's called the fucking expansion port. You hook the SegaCD onto it. =P

A fast look at the system case would have told you this.

Edit: I guess, it's slightly understandable, since you never had one, but still =P

The funniest is that I have the manual of my Genesis 2 clearly states that's the part where you connect the Sega CD in. It clearly states to ignore the "Do not remove" text ;P

Hey, Frigidare, you tried pluggin that into SK, right?

Have you attempted to plug it into another Megadrive? It could kill it, of course, but then again, could produce some wicked cool results.
EDIT: Also, your Megadrive was produced 5 days before my birthday. =D

What happens if you turn on the MD with S&K hooked up to the expansion port?

A fast look at the rules would have told you not to be a dick. So don't.

Aren't cartridges just extensions of the hardware, anyway? If that's the case, then the Genesis is the same thing as a cartridge. :P

Good to know what I thought upon reading it is true. I haven't seen them in a while. Folks got rid of them while I was at college and never said anything about it.

  18. Scissors, duh. It's not called "hacking" for nothing.

  19. Wow, those are some huge, blurry pictures, all of the same thing.

    Thread over, Grap3 wins.

But yeah, c'mon. It's obvious that the megadrive isn't a cartridge. Just because it has pin connectors.

Speaking of add-ons, could you play a special stage by plugging a 32X into Sonic & Knuckles?
