The internet lies: cheat code edition

Discussion in 'General Sega Discussion' started by Black Squirrel, Jul 9, 2022.

  1. Bo, I noticed you contributed to the recent fan translation for Rabbit. Do you know how to unlock all the additional options in the regular (unpatched) version of the game? The project page for the fan translation says:

    > In "Rabbit" there exists numerous unlockable options only accessible to players after beating the game one or more times (depending on the option). As part of this English translation patch, these supplemental options have been enabled by default.

    I beat the game once and unlocked the "Zoom" option, then beat it two more times and didn't unlock anything else (every time was on the normal difficulty level without losing a round or using a continue). The fan translation has three more options (Animal Stock, Stock Count, and Damage); do you know how to unlock those?

    This was one of the things I contributed, the extra options. It's 10 completions to unlock everything.

    It's all connected

    Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball (EA Mobile) credits "Distinctive Developments Ltd." (now Distinctive Games) as its developer.

    According to their history they are also responsible for the Saturn port of Primal Rage. We have some cheats for that game already, but there doesn't appear to be any obvious in-game credits to confirm or deny its development team. The US manual credits Probe (although some distinctive people get a "special thanks" credit?) - are there any clues?

    They're taking credit for the unreleased Saturn port of Tenka too, but nobody else is claiming that one.

    I did the Saturn Primal Rage codes (including guessing the cheat mode code which I'm more proud of than I should be!), other versions have credits you can view by holding certain directions for both players controller at the title screen. Might be worth a go on the Saturn as well.

    The Horde's cheat codes are spelled out in the game code, but A and B have weird mappings.
    • A button = O
    • B button = T
    • Up button = U
    • Down button = D
    • Left button = L
    • Right button = R
    The phrases are:
    • trot
    • turdodor
    • lootlord
    • trolldrool
    • loudtoot
    • dolldoor
    • rollout
    • oddrod
    The usual cheat sites have descriptions (e.g.) that seem to be accurate.

    For Saturn Primal Rage, here are the credits straight off the game disc:

    I've been testing that P Rage cheat menu a bit

    One Hit Kill P1 - means that P1 only needs 1 hit TO BE killed (learnt that one the hard way, I expected to be dishing out the 1 hit kill, not on the receiving end!)
    One Hit Kill P2 - P2 only needs 1 hit TO BE killed
    Quick FB - means you only need to win one match to achieve world domination and get to the final battle
    Quick Comp - means you only need to beat one opponent in the final battle to finish the game (normally it's an endurance against every opponent one after the other but with extra health)

    Still need to work out what's easy about easy fatalities.

    The credits do not appear when you win the game, even on skill level 16.
    They do appear eventually if you keep cycling through attract mode (thank goodness for turbo!)
    Obviously they match the text Bo found in the binary.
    upload_2024-6-19_9-37-35.png upload_2024-6-19_9-37-41.png

    The similar jag version has a title screen code for credits (P1 Left + P2 Right) but it doesn't work here.

    EDIT - out of curiosity is there any interest in in-game credits screenshots? Looks to me like it's preferred that it be typed out and hyperlinked which I guess makes sense when wanting to see what projects a dev worked on.

    Very much so - they're used for references. It needs to be typed out so the wiki to can automatically generate lists, but both is good.

    Anyway it looks like Distinctive Developments had some kind of role in Saturn Primal Rage (or at least, its bosses did), but most of it was done by Probe. Stretching the truth a little, it seems.

    Ah yes, I see Typhoon in particular has been going to town on that for a while now, I like the PDF format to represent multi page credits tidily.

    More plain text - Formula Karts Special Edition recognizes these special names:
    • OXFORD
    • BLADON
    • DUNSTEW
    • CHIPPIE
    • WOODSTOCK
    • FARTYPANTS

    The WOODSTOCK code definitely unlocks a new track (The Moon):
    upload_2024-6-26_13-18-55.png

    I can't tell what the other ones do. GameFAQS says that CHIPPIE unlocks "Super Kart," but what is that? There are only 8 kart models from what I can see.

    The code looks like maybe the others are meant to work together somehow, but I have no idea how to get to those paths.

    The codes on this page are correct for Kururin Pa!.

    To play as the king: enter X, B, Y, A at the title screen. Then hold up while selecting Michel.

    To see the endings: hold X+B+Z as the game starts up.

    It's been known for quite a while that you can unlock extra menus by putting the following in SONICCD.INI:
    Code (Text):
    1.
    2. [Secret]
    3. User=Debugger
    I've been poking at the .EXE and see that there are two other names: Fujiwara and Satoh. It's unclear to me what they unlock because I can't run the game on this PC. All I can see is what values they modify:

    Debugger:
    debugflag1 = 1
    debugflag2 = 0
    debugflag3 = 2

    Fujiwara:
    debugflag3 = 1

    Satoh:
    debugflag1 = 1
    debugflag2 = 0
    debugflag3 = 128

    They also unlock the same debug menu (I think, its been a while!) But I'm not aware of anyone going deeper and working out any subtle difference

    EDIT - ok, had a quick look running in PCEm. Satoh enables the STAGE and FUNC menus but Fujiwara does not. Which would suggest debugflag1 = 1 enables those particular features. Interesting. I wonder if the other flags do anything in the retail release.

    Here's a heretofore unknown code for Assault Suit Leynos 2:
    • At the title screen, using controller 2, hold L+X+Z+Right and press C. You’ll hear a click.
    • After that, switch to controller 1. Hold L+R and press Start.
    • At the data select screen, use controller 2 to hold L+A+B+C and then use controller 1 to press Start. You’ll hear another click.
    Before the mission starts, you'll get the equip screen (which normally doesn't show for the first mission). You'll have access to all the mechs right off the bat.

    I wrote up the technical details here.

    I end up in strange places.

    Foreman for Real/Hidden content
    GameFAQs has a "C00L-B0DS" password listed with an "unknown" effect. I can tell you exactly what it does:

    [IMG] [IMG]
    it changes some boxer names.

    Passwords aren't stored in plain text in this game, so there might be more than GameFAQs knows.

    Code (Text):
    1. Acclaim Boxing, Version 5.20Û`äThursday the 6thäof July, 1995
    I mean here's a version number and timestamp, but I've no idea if it's ever shown in game.

    So yeah I was checking to see which Mega Drive sports games are marked as sub-stubs, because I thought I'd padded all these pages out. Apparently not.

    [IMG]
    Both Premier Manager and Premier Manager 97 seem to have secret German translations, presumably from some earlier non-Sega project that these games derive from(?).

    No sign of any German teams, and indeed when you've got icons shaped like pound signs, it seems unlikely the game was intended for German audiences but... well.

    Cyber Doll has a very nice debug menu that's known to the Japanese Internet: hold X+Y+Z while the game is starting up to launch it.

    Davis Cup Tennis has a fair amount of imaginary players:
    (this was before women were invented)

    But there's a second set of players that only show up in tournament mode:
    As far as I can tell, you can never play as these guys... which is slightly weird - is there a code?
