That's a terrible idea. Babelfish is awful at translating stuff. The only thing Sega of Japan will think is that the english speaking world is full of mongoloids spurting the translated equivalent of "WANTING FOR THIS GAME SIMILAR IS AGREED?"

Didn't we determine back in the S4 topic that mass e-mailing / petitioning SOJ is not only utterly futile, but also makes you a fag?

I'm pretty sure this was scientificly proven.

By the All Spark, that must have taken a LONG time to make. Wow, he went through the trouble of remaking the entire level and everything!

I am AMAZED at the effort put into this. Must have been years in the making.

I doubt it took years. Have you ever been to polycount? Those guys can whip shit like this out in a week, its scary.

The longest part of this was undoubtedly the rendering.

  6. Yeah, its frightening. My cousin, who works in Special Effects for film, made a fully rendered F-16 (with operational wing-flaps and landing gear) in just under a month.

I think he played MHZ, and recorded it. Then based the animation off of that, which would explain its perfect "physics"

There aren't that many materials, and the geometry is pretty simple. Grass is basically just a material that you slap onto a surface, by the way.

If you wanted to make a remake of Sonic 3 like this, you might be able to simplify it by making a plugin that gets the position and state of everything from Sonic 3 running in an emulator that is then duplicated it to a separate rendering engine.

The Sonic model ruined this for me.

And then the reveal that it wasa prerender totally let me down.

I know guys at polycount who could probably throw this together pretty quickly.

I like the lighting and badniks though! And I particularlty like the music.

2.5D? Not interested. An admirable effort, but Sonic 4 looks a lot more appealing to me.

    Sonic 1 layout hack
Wow, how ironic is all of this. Just yesterday I was looking through this guy's YouTube videos again because I wanted re-watch the amazing 3D rendered footage that he made for the background videos of a Dream Theater concert I went to earlier in the year. In fact, if any of you are interested in what this guy has done commercially, he made all of the 3D rendered menus in Dream Theater's live DVD "Chaos in Motion." Also, there might be a slim chance that he made an engine for the sonic video because in some earlier Dream Theater concerts he made a song/video remix of Dream Theater's "The Dark Eternal Night" retitled "The Dark Nintendo Night" that contained a hacked version of Super Mario Bros. He named it "Super Majesty Bros." and replaced many of the characters and items with the members of Dream Theater. I also read somewhere a while back that he claims that the hack was real and could be played on an emulator but wasn't released to the public. So, he does have experience with rom hacking if my memory serves me right.

    All the bitches.

Simple tile editing is far from making a perfect replica of the S3 engine.

  12. Haha, I actually shown this video to my younger sister before, didn't tell her what it was, she's 10, her response "Woah, is this why they delayed Sonic 4? It looks loads better now! When's it out?".

Projects like these are where inspiration is born, which is all the more beautiful considering it was borne of inspiration.

making cool music no one gives a shit about
Very similar to the response my younger brother gave.

    "Is this in Sonic 4?!"
    "No, it's fanmade.
    "...Oh."

That's why people lie to kids! To make make things look better than they are. It works for the double dip recession!
If you did this before, do it again with S2 HD! I guess it's exactly the same!

Wow, this is truly stunning. The amount of work that must have gone into this.... My goodness, it just looks totally awesome and is a brilliant 2ยท5D. rendition of Mushroom Hill Zone Act 2, which looks graphically stunning in every way. Mega props to the creator!

I'd love to see this masterpiece in 1080p High Definition! :) (Or even just 720p H.D., although I'd really like to see its full glory in 1080p.)

Oh, and in case you guys didn't know, BlobVanDam updated the video description for his video:

May answer some questions I noticed people asking in this thread.

About arguing about the time it took him, it says in the description it took him 2-3 weeks. And as someone who also animates, I'm not surprised. The description ALSO says:
I seriously don't get how this "owns" Sega, as some people have said. It's not like they could have made sonic 4 look like this as a downloadable wii game, nor a downloadable 360 or PS3 game. It's not even the same type of art style. I'm not saying it's not impressive, but it doesn't seem very time consuming for a professional animator.

I don't get why this owns Sega either. To each their own. That said, this is quite nice. A fan film done in this format would be perfect.

I don't get why people are so bent out of shape over the model.

It's beautiful. Stop being so damn nit picky.

Well that was a good way to start my day. Pity it's not an actual game, as most people said, but it's not like it couldn't be . If someone gets ambitious enough, I can see it happening.
