Wee bit of a bump. I dug out my copy of Damon Hill's autobiography, and here's the passage which reveals how the SEGA-Williams deal and subsequent Sonic's Legs livery came about:
Spotted this in the September 1994 issue of Gamesmaster: Another example of the giant Game Gear screen at the 1993 Future Entertainment Show (and the car is there too)!
Not just that but one if the Sega Roadshow busses are there too! Shame we don't have more media of these events, some of the display pieces Sega had were wild.
https://retrocdn.net/File:SegaPower_UK_44.pdf (Page 13) Sega Power Magazine gave away some a set of Sonic's Legs decals and a team jacket in a competition.
This explains some eBay listings I've seen over the years. Some of the decals have popped up on there from time to time. No idea if they are the genuine ones but based on this it does look like making duplicates or decals and the jackets for fans (racing ones) was at one point a thing.
F1 teams usually make a large amount of duplicate decals to be applied incase the originals get damaged or had to be removed for local advertising law reasons. Wouldn't surprise me if Williams Heritage even had spare Sonic decals to this day.
Bumping this to say that I am aware SEGA has been trying to return to motorsport as a sponsor this year - first seen during the MotoGP race in Texas where they had a Shadow bike in the paddock and Sonic waving the chequered flag. They've been shopping for teams and championships to promote "Fearless Year of Shadow" and Sonic Generations.
Yeah so, they're also going to be at the MotoGP event in the UK next week at Silverstone. I did look into going but... its just time viable for me to get to for the day =/ If you're not able to get there in car or staying close overnight. Its REALLY hard to get to for a day trip.
