This is awesome! The story leading up + - to the origin of King Boom Boo was a nice surprise, especially because of all the hints they leave along the way. And I also like that the campfire story format means that it might not be definite and could just be an urban legend. It makes it more fun that way, as it's something for the viewer to ponder. Brilliant stuff!
That's awesome they did something Halloween related for it. I always wanted back in the day a Sonic Mania Adventures Halloween episode where they told scary campfire stories so this was perfect.
Ms. O'Shaughnessey's voicework is in full force this episode, I don't think I've heard anything cuter than ghost-story Tails in a long while!
Heh, that would be a fun addition to the series' lore regarding King Boom Boo. I'm not a fan of overplaining everything, but he's such a minor boss from over 20 years ago it really didn't matter. It's totally inconsequential one way or another. Why is the voice direction in this so much better than SXSG though? Rouge is utterly unbearable in that game, but she's just fine here.
https://bsky.app/profile/aaronhamm.bsky.social/post/3l7swotvxbk2x aaron hammerstrom (works on idw comics) did some art here, art for the human king it seems
That’s hilarious - I thought she was alright in SXSG but only tolerable here I was gonna say! I can see a few Yardleyisms in his style, it’s nice to see Sonic Team don’t just want him for IDW, happy he can work on a variety of things.
It was my idea to bring Aaron in actually. I usually do any original art in Tails Tube myself, but we're in full steam towards the end on Movie 3 so I needed some help. Aaron is also a big Black Knight fan and I wanted that Story Book cutscene feel to Tails' story so I knew he'd be a great fit. edit: Just regarding the voice acting in TailsTube, I direct the actors in the booth for all the episodes and I take almost all of their takes home and then meticulously put them together later. I am extremely picky about conversational flow and will sit there pushing and pulling frames and swapping takes for hours to get things just right. And since I make the whole thing myself I can keep messing with things like that all the way to the end, which is a grace no other production really has. When you have multiple departments working together you just have to make your decisions and stick with it. But I am Ship-Of-Theseus-ing these episodes all the way to the end just because I can.
How considerate of you! I’m certainly appreciative you brought him on, I love their art and I can imagine it must feel good to have someone at the ready who’s able to lighten the workload. Good luck to you, and pass on my regards as a stranger to the rest of the movie staff if you’re able!
It's always a joy to see Aaron Hammerstrom get more work on Sonic. His ability to consistently produce extremely on-model Sonic art brimming with energy and emotion is second to none and I would love to see him get to make alternate artwork for reversible game covers in the future.
Really great work on this, love all the stuff you do for tailstube and hope we can keep getting more of them. As a followup question to last time, since you said these are recorded from home on zoom, is this an ensamble recording of all the actors, (some from their home studios presumably mike and roger, as well as some in the studiopolis booth) or do all the actors record individually. And how many tailstubes are recorded at a time generally. I assume since this is mainly a sonic pillar project, it would explain why there isn't a japanese version of these. Keep up the great work, you and the actors all kill it here.
Very curious over the background here. Is it an edited SADX screenshot or an illustration traced over one?
Everyone records individually, as in not as an ensemble. Schedules just don't allow for everyone to get together at the same time unfortunately. Wether they record at Studiopolis or at home just depends on if they're in LA or afar, really. We typically record a whole season at a time, and then if I need any pickups I'll try and piggyback a few takes onto another session that they have for something else later. The background this time was originally an SADX screenshot captured on PC and then heavily altered and painted over.
I love these. They’re so cute and add to the lore. So who killed the King? His men for allowing them to be sacrificed or the evil entity that took them? He’s holding the talisman so shouldn’t that grant eternal life or it needs to be worn? I wish Shadow had taken Sonic’s candy. I felt bad that he let it fall on the ground.
Yes, basically the legend foretold that the talisman would grant you eternal life at the cost of a great sacrifice. The king assumed the sacrifice could be be his men, so when he heard them calling out "the price!" he thought they meant that the price had been paid and the prize was ready to claim. But they were trying to warn him what the price was; that to gain eternal life you have to sacrifice your mortal soul.
