Strider Hiryu in Sonic 1

I've just found a small Sonic 1 mod/experiment I made some months ago (using Nineko's xm2smps and Xenowhirl's SonMapEd), that I had already forgotten about. There's some very noticeable bugs that I didn't manage to fix back then, but I'm posting it before it gets lost somewhere in the depths of my HDs.

Also, it's just kinda fun even if it feels incomplete.

    Features/Changes:
-Strider Hiryu graphics and animations replacing all of Sonic's (no custom art had to be made).
-Intro, levels, bosses, invincibility and ending music has been changed. You might want to go directly to the sound test and try to figure out the games those tracks came from (Spring Yard and Ending are just two random, sligthly modified, chiptunes).
-Intro screen runs for a bit longer so it doesn't interrupt the music.

    Bugs:
-Some of the main character's tiles look like they're been taken from the wrong VRAM address. No idea of how to fix this.
-I had some problems when trying to rotate the sprites 90º in SonMapEd, which caused those frames to look like garbage (not in SonMapEd, though), so you'll just see a garbled mess running over certain slopes.
-The top of the background/foreground messes up whenever Sonic dies or there's a fade in/out, for some unknown reason.
-Score from inside the enemies, etc, comes out garbled.
    -SEGA Sound is messed up.

    Things that could be improved:
-Some music tracks sound like a cat just got ran over.
-The lives icon (and title screen) show Sonic. I was just lazy on this.
-The invincibility and shields are always protecting his pants.

Let's see what I can figure out.

    81: No idea.
    82: No idea.
    83: Town from Zelda 2
    84: No idea.
85: No idea. IIRC this was one of the random chiptunes, though, so of course I wouldn't know.
    86: Wacky Workbench Past
87: Sounds like it's supposed to be Sonic Advance's Invincibility?
    88: Same as Sonic 1
89: Sounds vaguely familiar, but I can't place it.
    8A: Mario Bros. title theme.
    8B: Same as Sonic 1
8C: No idea but it came out nice.
    8D: No idea.
    8E: Same as Sonic 1
    8F: Same as Sonic 1
    90: Same as Sonic 1
91: No idea. This was the other chiptune, wasn't it?
    92: Same as Sonic 1
    93: Same as Sonic 1

Well, four out of whatever isn't THAT bad...

Yep, 85 and 91 are the completely unrelated chiptunes.

Part of Team Megamix, but haven't done any actual work in ages.
More like Sonic Advance 2/3, since Sonic Advance 1 uses S1's invincibility song :P

ID 8C = Boss music from Tiny Toons: Busters Hidden Treasure.

    Great game. :P

    Decent hack too. :P

Heh, I was just playing it the other day and noticed that not only it clones ideas from the old Sonics, but it also seems to have similar stuff even to Sonic games that were released later (Mighty's wall jump, slower walking animations like in Sonic Advance 2/3). Freaky stuff.

Fun fact: all the videogame-related music in this mod (including Tiny Toons') was imported from MIDIs, transformed to XM with ModPlug Tracker, then to BIN with xm2smps.

...you know, sometimes it's better to just leave the original music intact. >_>

    8C is pretty cool though.

EDIT: As for track 87... perhaps you meant it to come out like this? :P

I was waiting for someone to do Strider in Sonic. Now I can kill myself.

    Wow, that's pretty cool.

Converting between Sappy -> MIDI -> XM -> SMPS proved to be a bit too much for me. =(
