You say that like SA2 didn't already have script differences in its english dub that "ruins" stuff like, say, Amy's speech in the final story. Of course a rewrite would be fine, the original is cut from that same cloth.

I was initially open to the idea of Gens being rewritten but the whole way they're doing it is just not going to work. The writing in the original game wasn't good outside of a few jokes, but the main problem is really how barebones and nonexistent the overall plot is more than the dialog itself. All they're really doing at this point is Frontiers-ifying the original plot by adding more lore references and eliminating the "meta" humor, which doesn't actually fix anything meaningful and also feels incredibly out of place with the whole way the game's story is presented. Ultimately it doesn't ruin the entire game for me since i didn't care much about Gens' story to begin with, but rewriting the game like this just feels like a needless mistake more than anything else

Some part of me thinks that maybe it's just an elaborate effort to not have to pay royalties to any old voice actors that might not have stuck around with the dubbing cast for the time being, but then the JP version would have to be participating in the rewrite/redub too so it doesn't really hold much ground. I'd really like to be a fly on the wall at Sega to find out what the intention really was.

The Japanese script is completely irrelevant. It's a localization while the English one is the original.

I'd argue that it was a collab effort. Leaning more on Sega/ST's side, even.

Point is, I don't believe the JP Sonic cutscenes are purely an act of localizing the English scripts of whichever writer we love/hate. Rather, there's active intent in separating what they want Sonic to be in Japan VS what they want it to be in English-speaking/international countries. And while they hire who they need to help write the plots or push those distinctions, it's all their call.

In other words, there's no lesser scripts here. Sonic Team decided on the JP script just as they did the English one.

The finger pointing towards individual writers and contributors in general is so gross. These people are just doing their jobs

Going through Generations' Japanese cutscenes, it definitely seems like the collaboration was handled the most gracefully out of the entire series. Hell, the cutscene's energy and body language actually match better than the Eng version, in spite of the lip sync matching the latter. I think that the "Seriously, we beat this guy like every time" DNA of the English cutscene dictating the Japanese scene, works alongside the Amy example in the English version to make this the most "the scripts are equal" example out of all the games. But the argument about sensibilities being pushed is off-base for the scene being cited, considering Sonic Team are the ones usually pushing the clingy Amy direction, while the western direction is the opposite - this is just a case of one script handling it in a more likable way than the other, rather than the Japanese version being either the original or a deliberately equal decision of marketing importance.

The argument of originality isn't actually addressed with this either; if they're both of deliberately equal influence on each other, the argument for preservation in favor of originality still applies to both with that equality.

Heard about this and was wondering what was going on. I'll be happy with my 360 copy, I don't support this overcorrection of Amy's character just because SEGA (who for reasons forgot what they were doing with Amy in Adventure and SA2) couldn't be assed to make her care about something other than loving Sonic between 2003-2013.

Gotta hand it to the leaker to have the courtesy to warn people about bigger leaks before dropping them, very respectable.

It's kinda funny how relatively calm and low-key the Shadow Generations leaks are, compared to the absolutely chaotic whirlwind happening over in the Pokemon fandom.

I agree about the fingerpointing and I’m very disappointed that a moderator started this thread by doing exactly that. But honestly I can’t blame him. We all love sonic and wants what’s best for the franchise while still preserving the past. I am disappointed in Sega’s decision to change the dialogue regardless of the quality.

I will also say that I personally regret how I previously felt about Pontaff and Graff based on what we now know about Sega’s editorial guidances. The sonic fanbase (myself included) has a nasty habit of pointing to someone and saying “X person is the reason Sonic sucks now”. That scapegoat has been Naka, Iizuka, Kishimoto, Pontaff and Graff, and now Ian Flynn.

We're only a few days away, and we're only talking about one game. Gamefreak got FUCKED. Multiple games affected including an unannounced one. There's also employee data in the mix. We're getting off easy.

Amy can't desire Sonic anymore, Rouge has to be toned down now. The modern times disappoint me more every week.

New Amy basically has no personality besides "girl" and "tarot cards". I much prefer her characterization in SA - Heroes over the new one.

"New Amy" is still pretty clearly old Amy in the IDW comics. Still crushes on Sonic, still really silly and feisty, none of that went away. They just added her new 'adventurer' angle and tarot card obsession in.

And that's a place where Flynn and co have significantly more control, so I don't think it's him or anyone on the IDW Sonic staff trying to lessen how she once acted. Seems more like the usual mandate mess they've gotta fumble through.

Amy still cares about Sonic, they just don't wanna make her look too obsessive with him, since Amy is more than "character that likes protagonist". I like Amy in Sonic Adventure 1-2, but I don't wanna 2000's Amy back.

I will say I wish Amy was better in Frontiers, tho'.

Why is Amy's crush on Sonic getting flanderized and overtaking over her characterization and interactions for several games okay,

But exactly one game with tarot cards (and Frontiers goes out of its way to explain why she can't use her hammer) is too much and "not a personality"? Also, did they "take away her feminity" or is she "just the Girl" now, because I'm hearing both from people (even the exact same people) and that doesn't make much sense.

Can I digress and say it's weird how hostile people are about female characters being "girlbosses" but "girlboss" has been dumbed down to "competent and not Hyper feminine"?

Anyway, Amy using the hammer as a broom and the cards as a wheel is the coolest she's been in decades. Plural.

If they should do anything, it's lean into the whole magical girl angle.

Amy's crush wasn't flanderized - that was literally her entire character from the beginning. I'm not saying that should be her entire character (because that sucks too), but I just don't think her recent portrayal makes for an interesting character at all.

And Origins also had the tarot cards.
