Seriously though, I am genuinely hearing a lot of reports of the new Sonic Generations port being less stable than the original. But the game always had a fit if you did something it didn't expect. And sometimes it would throw a paddy regardless of what you did. It was inconsistent.

There's this upper path in Sky Sanctuary 1 you reach hy bouncing off Egg Robos, I used to consistently get to it just by holding left while bouncing. Now I have to actively aim myself to bounce off them. Something is definitely wrong with the physics in Sonic Gens.

Is this relatively near the beginning of the level, about 21 seconds in this video? I remember this one being particularly finicky in OG Gens and made the same error in the new version. If you hit the first enemy from too low down or too far to the right (the direction that Sonic approaches from), you won't make it to the red platform at the end and will call to the lower route. It's very easy to misalign your jump and isn't exclusive to the new release.

There's a few other examples, such as at 1 minute in the same video. These kinds of jumps in Generations are easy to mess up because they're far more precise than they seem to be in the surface.

Yeah, but it happens more often in X Generations. I wouldn't say it's a placebo either, like thinking that Sonic feels different to handle. I'm not talking about a jump timing being slightly off either. Things like scripted loops or walking on shakey terrain like the log bridges can cause issues. It happens in OG Gens, but it happens more often in X Gens.

I wouldn't say it makes X Gens unplayable, but it is noticeable. Especially when you spend 3 hours testing and resetting side by side like an idiot. I'll upload an unedited video showing it off next time I'm home demonstrating it.

Yeah, I can absolutely buy that XGens is introducing new problems and whatnot. Too many people are saying that it feels off.

Well if you buy it then I don't need to make a video.
Please God no, don't make me do a video. I'm so close to beating 2 minutes in Chaos 1.

I even love the cheese in this game, it's great. The line where Metal Overlord calls himself the ultimate weapon and Shadow gets cocky is great, and I loved the dialog during the Mephiles fight. Especially the ending where he screams in agony that he wants to exist, and Shadow tells him he'll never come back in any timeline.

It's just the right amount of edgy and cool that it works. He's Vegeta as fuck in this game and it's awesome.

Shout outs to using Chaos Control outside of a warp and getting slapped by Metal while he boasted about it.

There is no better example of how much Sonic the Hedgehog is open to interpretation and can go in wild, completely different directions than to compare Classic Sonic's City Escape, to Shadow's Radical Highway. In terms of function, in SA2, they are basically Acts 1 and 2 of the same zone motif, yet their interpretations are so wildly completely different. Classic Sonic's is about as cheery as the entire series gets, with bright poppy colors, cheerful vocals, and Sonic riding an adorable skate board completely with BOOOP noise from the monitor. Then we see Shadow's version, and it's a nightmare world with red skies that is ripping itself apart and twisting in every direction like a kaleidoscope. And yet both versions feel completely appropriate. Its what I've loved about this series going all the way back to the Bad Futures in Sonic CD: Sonic can go anywhere and do anything. It can be bright and fun, it can be edgy and dark, and it fits like a glove.

I'm in the same boat, I think I saw people early in the thread complain that he sounds to whiny. And while I can see that and part of it is their choice of VA (I'm not saying he did a bad job, just wasn't a fit for the character), I do really like it and think it makes sense, because Mephiles knows he was erased from the canon, he's desperate. So desperate that he pulls "The move that kills Sonic" SEVERAL TIMES on Shadow. It's just so cool and provides a good explanation as to why 06 stuff is in Gens, because it pulls from other timelines. Good stuff, really. I just wanted more out of the boss fight itself.

I personally liked all the boss fights in the game. I appreciated that they didn't overstay their welcome, and to me they felt more like Zelda bosses than traditional Sonic bosses. I liked how each one would incorporate your most recently learned Doom abilities. I had a lot of fun with them. I thought they were flashy without being basically a movie, which I felt Frontier's bosses were like.

Can't wait for a sequel to this.

This is one of the few times where I was thrilled to see Mephiles back. I may be letting on that I know more (and I apologize if I do. You understand, I hope.) but it makes sense to see him back in extra or non-canon stuff. I genuinely liked him as a villain, and was probably the best one in 06 (not hard when Eggman looks weird and is playing Bowser essentially, and Iblis is generic monster of the day that era really loved) but because the game decided to erase itself from any sort of continuity, it means it's very difficult to bring him back outside of Sonic Dash or stuff like that.

To see him here, where time fuckery is absolutely in peak, and openly referencing that he wants to be back in the canon while Shadow both doesn't understand who the hell this is but still saying, "Nope, never, you're gone" and basically absolutely flatlining the guy from power creep? I actually really enjoyed that. It's about all the reverence the boss fight needed, and we got a great remix of Mephiles Phase 2 out of it. He at least made for a better boss than Infinite could ever do (and I also LIKED Infinite.)

Honestly I really wish we’d spent more of the boss fighting Mephiles himself rather than his flunkies, as well as fighting as Shadow rather than the Doom Morph (I like it better than I first did but I still don’t love it). Overall I think it was just a bit anticlimactic, especially combined with the tepid difficulty. Ah well, the S-ranks have been a genuine challenge in places so maybe Doom Zone Mephiles will be more entertaining to me.

Infinite. Mephiles at least had a confirmed kill. Infinite got wrecked, put on a mask, said some middle school edgy shit, then got unceremoniously written off. Dude only had aura in his reveal trail then consistently had nothing. Didn't even get picked for Shadow Genny.

It occurs to me that they skipped Sonic Lost World in Shadow Generations...
