I like it, but I think we need a bit more to it than that. Three words: METAL SONIC RACE A few more: You know how we're all talking about throwing in every form of Metal Sonic? Here's where we encounter them! Grudge matches with Sonic to race for the emerald. Of course, if there's going to be a race then there ought to be some sort of collectible item around for Sonic to grab to help speed him up a bit to give him an edge over his opponents. How about a classic mainstay of Sonic 3D stages since Sonic 3K?
AND some time increase items/boxes.. that is, if it hasn't been thought up yet. I love the Metal Sonic idea, it should become a race of some sort for sure.
Do we have 6/7 incarnations of Mecha/Metal/Silver Sonic? 1. The Roller in Spring Yard Zone 2. Silver Sonic in Sonic 2 8-bit 3. Mecha Sonic in Sonic 2 16-bit 4,5. Mecha Sonic and Super Mecha Sonic in Sonic 3 & Knuckles 6. Metal Sonic in Sonic CD 7. ???????
Mobiethan: Well if it's an actual race you don't really need a timer as such -- your opponent sets the pacing instead. There is also the redesigned Metal Sonic from Heroes, not sure if that would count or not.
The final Special Stage features Eggman getting increasinly pissed off as each Metal Sonic loses, and races you himself. >_>

But I think that we should make it, well, more Sonic-ish, and make the Outrun reference a little bit less clear. Having that surreal look of the Special Stages (Sonic CD style at minimum), and the later levels would have crazy tracks, not possible IRL, you know what I mean? Bottomless pits, springs and loops, and any kind of Sonic-ish features.
Guys, I was waiting to see what the response would be before I positively drooled all over this idea myself. I've said before that OutRun and Sonic share a lot of similar themes - starting with the coastal level, and working through world stereotypes. Hell, there's even a CASINO in Out Run 2006. Looking at the various level themes in Out Run, what about this; a special stage's background corresponds with the background of a zone (For example, the tropical first zone would be an OutRun-style coastal area, and we can have a carnival one, etc.)? Just an idea I'm throwing in the pot.
Half the time I played OutRun 2006 I thought how awesome it'd be if there was a secret unlockable Sonic car, which would be Sonic, on foot. I wholeheartedly approve of this idea despite not caring about this project otherwise!! EDIT: SAME WORDING AS OVERLORD. ..."I energetically support this Special Stage concept" then.
I too agree that the Outrun idea would be good, seeing as you're moving all fast and drifting and such. It's almost like one of those kinds of sections in the Sonic Unleashed levels (which someone else already said). But as Rave said, it needs to be less obvious, make it like a Sonic level, but with the camera behind him as opposed to 90 degrees from his face, and with the pits and spikes and enemies and rings. Maybe add the quick step as well?
I posted the same identical idea for a Special Stage on the old forum (the only difference was that the tracks, even if they had 2D graphics, where 3D in their structure). I also had some concept on how it would have worked with some past special stage gimmicks and a lap system. The concept was that Sonic needed to complete 3 laps in a certain amount of time (where it gets shorter with each lap: Lap 1 1 minute, Lap 2 55 seconds, Lap 3 50 seconds, and so on). The player could not control Sonic acceleration, but could make him turn left and right, and jump. Dirt would make Sonic go slower (and since you race against time this is an hazard). Sonic could collect rings in the stage, and if he had rings before going in dirt, he would lose rings instead of speed (kinda like the Sonic CD SS, although in it Sonic losed time). The gimmicks from past SS stages that could make an appearance where: The bomb from Sonic 2 SS, which would have worked in a very similar way. If Sonic hits one, the explosion sends him backward, making him lose speed and time (if Sonic has rings, although the explosion still send him back, he recovers faster and don't lose speed) UP/DOWN blocks from Sonic 1. If Sonic touches one of them, his max speed increase/decrease. Highter max speed would make him faster, but would also make turning harder. Blue/Red Spheres. The Blue spheres marks shortcuts. If Sonic uses a shortcut, the spheres turns Red and Sonic will be unable to pass it again. However, there could be a way so that if Sonic accomplish certain things during the shortcut, the spheres turns into rings instead, allowing him to use the shortcut on later laps too. I'm sure I forgot something. I don't have it anymore, so could anyone of the project leaders recover my special stage concept from the old forum in some way and bring it here somehow?

But could we please have splash wave as the music for one of the stages if we do? :v:
Splash Wave was probably my least favorite of the songs from that game. Still, I do think it would fit in well with all the other music in the game I've done so far, so I may just try my hand at it.
