Special Stage Development

    While I don't speak for all of us, I'm pretty sure that we understand that these are nothing more but mock-ups and don't represent anything more than that. I'm personally only using what Compense provided so that people can get a general idea of what we're actually going to see of the background itself (not the pipe), transparency or not and mainly so what I'm showing doesn't seem so empty.

    Whoops. Looks like I used an old file to make the new one. It's fixed now.

    Trying to replicate them but I seem to be having trouble. I'll find a way to do it though.

    I'm satisfied with the coloring, it's just the way the diamonds go all weird on the bottom half that's throwing me off.

    I thought I'd add this, maybe for the database, to get an idea of the construct of the special stage tubes. I've seen these 4 versions so far

    Some observations:
    - The orbs are aligned with the orange half-ring
    - The arrows are also positioned at each half-ring, centered at half the length of each arrow
    - At turns, sometimes 2 cylinders are position on the top-edges of the tube
    - The checkpoint rings are rings from the main game, but flashing different colours.

    And you know, I never noticed that the background moved around. When I play the special stages, I alwasy focus on the rings and tubes. Amazing how blind I was.

    Apologies in advance for the repost, but when I surfed through the pages I found that not a single person acknowledge my suggestion for the art direction. Nor do any of the mockups seem to be taking this direction. I think it's at least worth considering. Delete the previous post on the fourth page if you like. I'm working on a cleaner version of the concept as we speak.

    Alright RSS, you said it was a very rough draft. Make a new, more refined version when you're ready and you'll get updated feedback on it. In its current state there's not a lot of positive things I can say about it.

    I thought what you have done recently looks great. I didn't comment as you said it's a rough draft. So I was just waiting till you get something done to what you consider is worthy before I commented.

    Also...

    I've been thinking as an idea for the SS is to have the half pipe switch between occupancies from time to time so it breaks up the repetitiveness.

    Your layout looks the best of any I've seen so far, the alignment is perfect, and the gradients mingle nicely in both the foreground and background. You've handled the middle connecting strip ICE referred to very well. My only suggestion would be to make the top diamond pop more, as it fades into the background color a bit too much right now.

    Chimpo, if you need a shaping template, here you go.

    So its going to tile? Remember, 16:9, not 4:3. And if you would like my collection of various stars and stuff, I'd be glad to oblige, not that they're all that great.

    And it seems that your diamonds are stretched vertically.

    In fact they are...

    ...not (they are in the pic but not in RL)!

    The ripped BG is not at the correct aspect ratio because the MD uses a different resolution for the special stages, on a 4:3 tv they look like more wide, as the other mockups here.
