soniNeko, my hack of Sonic 1

I've been working on my hack a lot in the last few days, also because I don't have a job anymore, so I thought it was fair to post some updates here in case anyone was still interested in this. Now, I don't feel like it's ready for a public release yet, but I plan to work on it a bit more and release something in time for the hacking contest.

So, what's new? Of course don't expect graphic improvements or anything like that, soniNeko has always been a music hack, and I doubt it will ever get new art.

I added some new more songs, you should already know about Metallic Madness and Sleeping in my car, since I posted them in the Genesis Music Thread, but I bet you don't know yet about Mario Kart 64 Battle and Mario Kart 64 Yoshi Valley (unless you are one of my beta testers of course :P)
There are also several other new songs in soniNeko, but I figured out that teasers are good if one doesn't show too much at once :P
What are all those songs for? Well, for one, each special stage has a different song now. That, and I added a song also for the Speed Shoes (fuck, another teaser! I can't resist )

I also decided to concentrate on the ASM part of it, taking some time to fix some bugs from the original Sonic 1 that always bothered me, and some other time to add nice features here and there. As I once said, boredom is a very good ASM teacher.

Oh right, and I added a new level, Good Morning Zone:


Being SLZ4 in disguise (with different palette and title card), Good Morning Zone is the first level you play in soniNeko now, as you can tell by the level select screen:


I'm going to add another new level, but I can't confirm anything at this time. Hopefully I'll get it done for the contest.

I'm also thinking about Slow Shoes and "S" Monitor, but I'm not sure about them so they won't probably make it into the final version of my hack.

Since it seems I can't resist from posting teasers, here's another one. The song isn't labeled by purpose, let's see who is the first to guess what it is

Now, for the credits, a lot of thanks go to Puto, he helped me on several things, including getting SLZ4 in.

It gives you one additional minute (or less, if you are in the first minute) to complete the level, or lets you get higher time bonuses at the end of the level.

Of course it won't be present in any level until I redesign the layouts, but it will be used eventually.

Aaaaaaaah someone should stop me before I add 32894234 useless monitors

 

I still have to decide, actually. It will probably change the music to one of the unused tracks, either randomly or pre-defined.

And yes, the VRAM is getting sad with all those monitors, I have room only for one (maybe two) more. Not sure what I should do next.
Any suggestions? Here's some ideas:

• Slow Shoes: makes Sonic slower
• $ monitor: gives you 10000 points
• GO monitor: lets you skip the level
• -1 monitor: placed one per zone, decrease the hitcount for Final Zone's boss by one
• ? monitor: swaps your left and right controls
