    Working on my art!
The GG music is ok. It's certainly unique. However it could sound a little better (I'd prefer a remix of the song. Either way it sounds good enough).

Right, it is also possible to get MPT make good conversions with some tricks. Sometimes you just need to hex edit some values in the MIDI header to "cheat" and load it properly.

The palette you've got there works real nicely, but I'd recommend you lose the recognisable bits of the default EHZ... I gather I'm not the only person who likes to completely wipe a level layout clean before starting a new one, and it's probably the best way to go to keep your hack feeling 'fresh'.

However, what I've seen of the actual new layout there looks quite good.

Wow, that's much better. The music is quite fitting, too!

You might want to fix the title screen music, though—Puto can help explain how if you ask him. I believe it has to do with how modulation works in Z80 SMPS compared to 68k SMPS; the range of a pitch bend is different, so you have to work around it.

I'm also glad to see you got Tails' flying in there okay. :) Keep up the good work!

Part of Team Megamix, but haven't done any actual work in ages.
In the case of the S&K theme, it's impossible to port it perfectly without changing some of the code that handles modulation in the Sonic 1 driver, as even with the number of steps set to the maximum ($FF), it's still not enough.

Ok, If you were wondering, I've been doing new art in Emerald Hill (I've only done the new art to the trees currently, now they are emeralds).

The new background and foreground art will be done soon.

Comments, Criticism, and suggestions are welcome.

Purple Rain would be better yet. *shot* Interesting hack ideas. You should try art edits too though. :)

    That's a great palette there.

For a third character, I would actually avoid Knuckles like the plague. He's too expected really. Same with Shadow and Mighty. I kinda think they have a little too much exposure in hacks. Understandable though because all three are awesome.

Bean actually does seem like a pretty unique choice, can't imagine how he'd play though.

If you can make Bean work, then go for it. Otherwise, I'd go with Amy. Yes, Amy. I can't stand her, but I think any hack that fully utilizes her would be seriously awesome.

On the subject of new characters, when some hacker comes along with the skill (And balls) to include Sonic (High speed ground character), NiGHTS (Aerial trickster) and Ristar (Somewhere between the two with a penchant for groping) I'll be happy.

The layout looks better than before, but this is still really nothing new. Have you worked on any of the other levels yet?

I'm very sorry for the two month bump.

I am ready for a release of what I've got done.

    Download

EHZ act 1 is done, and I'm currently working on EHZ act 2.

Oh, and Emerald Hill is the only zone playable in this build.

Act 1 isn't much new, but Act 2 surprised me. Excellent choice in music, and for what's done, it has a very solid layout and nice palette to accompany it.

Awesome job, and keep up the great work! :(

    Ok, ready for another release:

    Sonic Zeta Overdrive release 2

    This release has:

    Act 2 of EHZ done.
Wall Recoil removed - Yes, the Wall Recoil was so annoying.
HTZ added to the main game level order as zone 2 - Palletes and music for Act 1 and Act 2 done, I've yet to start on the layout for Acts 1 and 2.
    Some new music
Replaced the Special Stage in level Select with Wood Zone. - I'm going to start on Wood Zone in the next version.

    Things I've yet to fix:
The soundtrack change option, where you can change the Soundtrack.
    Fix Wood Zone's title card.

    So, enjoy!

  17. Lots of awesome music, cool levels, nice pallettes, clearly a very good hack.

I suggest fixing the title theme though.

    Keep it up :)

Not too shabby! The beginning of Act 1 is still way too easy to die in with all the unforgiving bottomless pits, but Act 2 is a lot more solid of a layout. The music is definitely unique as well—you don't hear that music in many Sonic hacks. Nice and original. :)

Not much new, admittedly, but you're still on the right track. Looking forward to the next release! :v:

    Doing anything at all
This is really good! Not much else to say, really.

Your options menu music is broken, though...

Ok, sorry for the four month bump, but I haven't posted an update on this hack in a long time, so, I might want to post an update:

I am putting Sonic Zeta Overdrive on hold due to development decisions (No, Sonic Zeta Overdrive is not cancelled), as I am having trouble on deciding on what to add, and what to implement. I would like to thank everyone for their opinions on who should the third playable character will be in my hack, and the third playable character in my hack is none other than Bean the Dynamite.

Many of you will be asking "Why not Knuckles?". To clear this up, Knuckles will be an 32x exclusive playable character. Yeah, I have plans for a 32x version, and the 32x version will have exclusive features that were not in the Mega Drive version (Like for example, new 32x specific music).

And I had an idea for the boss of Gear Factory Zone. No, it will not be Grounder, Coconuts or Scratch, it will be Kula Diamond, yes, Kula from The King of Fighters, when I thought up of adding Kula as a boss for Gear Factory, I was like, "Hey, why not Kula, I would love to add a character from The King of Fighters series to my hack, as a boss of some sort, so, why not Kula?"

Last but not least, I would like to turn this hack into a complete 3-Part series, yes, Part one will be based on Sonic 1, Part two is Sonic Zeta Overdrive, and Part three will based on Sonic 3 and Knuckles. So, I am turning this topic from a topic about a single hack, to the Sonic Zeta series.

Before I can end this update, I will reply to your comments and criticism (I am doing the replies from the 2nd release).

    ----

The beginning of Act 1 is more like a challenge in the current release, when I work on this hack again, I'll change the beginning of Act 1.

As for the Music, I know that two of the songs (The ones that I used for Hill Top Zone) are from Fatal Fury 2. I had an idea that the songs that I used would fit in Hill Top Zone, the song used in Act 1 of HTZ is Pasta - The theme of Andy Bogard from Fatal Fury 2, and the theme of Act 2 is Muay Thai - The theme of Joe Higashi from Fatal Fury 2.

Overall, thanks for telling me about Emerald Hill Act 1, I know the beginning is like a challenge to get thorugh the corkscrew.

Thanks for telling me, I didn't notice that the timing in the options menu music is broken, I already fixed the song. The only thing I noticed wrong in the song is the timing in the FM channels, but thanks anyway, it has been already fixed.

    ----

Overall, I will release the third release soon, so get ready for a release in the next Hacking Contest.
