Front page'd. Hopefully it's showing the RIGHT video this time. Stupid video id. Anyway, see, this is the kind of stuff we should be doing a little more of instead of constantly bitching about everything wrong with Sonic now. This and the whole thing with The Jetzons are examples of things we've not tapped into as a research community yet, mainly because (in my opinion) most of the people here have had their heads up their butts about Sonic 4, green eyes, spike pits, and other trivial miscellaneous nonsense. Good find and sourcing, man. This was interesting to watch.
(if more people helped with Sega Retro this sort of thing would be more common - Sonic material naturally occurs when tackling the bigger picture) also this footage is pretty much as I expected it to be. Aside from "Metal Sonic moves about a bit" it doesn't really tell us anything new. Neat though I suppose - too bad they had to talk all over it
Hey I'm just finding the formula for green eyes man. I just want to prove that poison is involved s'all.
This clip really helps with my recreation project quite a bit actually, especially with how the buildings were placed and giving a better look at the backdrop textures. I don't think I'll be re-creating Metal Sonic's clunky looking moves though lol
What strikes me about that footage is how high the frametate is. They really did have the boss engine running smooth as butter!
That was much faster than I was expecting. Good work! Really wish they'd zoom in more to the screen, or better yet just cut to footage rather than merely showing it playing on a TV. Better than nothing, though :v:
Back then, the only way to get footage was to either have the dev system there and record it on a connected VCR or to record the screen. I don't think Sega was going to allow a VCR at a small expo just for a Canadian kids show.
Yeah after dissecting it frame by frame its impossible to use as reference from such blurry images to re-creat textures from. However I believe the buildings themselves are billboard polygons that always face the camera. Although again its kind of hard to tell. It does give me a little better understanding of the background layout though. not sure how usefull it will be. I cant quite pull off any camera matching this time because of the camera man's porn video style camera angles. lol I'll figure some kind of use out though....Wish it were as clear as the game-fan screens ! perhaps something new will show up in another 15 years....(perhaps the video that was used to take the actual gamefan screens from will surface)
Now if we could find video, or better yet the disc, of that Nack boss fight. That's probably the least seen portion of the game as far as coverage goes.
My X-box One came today.. I've not even gotten up to open the box yet because I've been sitting here studying the x-treme clip frame by frame looking for a good place to start the re-creation process for the background... The PS4 has been sitting with the Wii U now for awhile collecting dust because I've been so busy with all this X-treme crap...Don't think I'll even be playing any of them for awhile now.
DaGuAr spotted that it says Metal Blade. ( its hard to tell 100% because of the quality) but hey I think he may be correct ! In this frame we can see an L A and part of a D? and in another frame there is an E at the end.
Oddly enough it looks like the font they used for the level names in the Generations HUB. Also it does kinda look like Metal Blade, as mentioned below
Oh, wow, fantastic catch on the title card. I totally did not see that. And so smooth, too. I'm sad this game never got finished, but I will be patiently waiting on Andrew's remake... Andrew and shoemanbundy, good work on this! What a lovely few weeks it has been.
Looking threw the many sonic X-treme concepts that I have backed up I came across this: It does not give us a clear boss naming scheme or anything like that but Freeway FRENZY sounds like the perfect place to hold a Metal Sonic race. And guess what stage it belongs to.....Metal Blade! ( yeah I know this isn't really proof or anything like that) I'll pick some Dev brains if I can to find out for sure.
Well I'll be, it does say Metal Blade. Looks like we now know what stage Metal was meant to be a boss in after all these years, although it certainly seems to make sense. Also is that the Generations HUB font? It looks so damn similar.
This is the best I can get it with as little conversion as possible, from the EyeTV proprietary format... https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B74H9496rzgcZ1FFVnJRNzlzc00/edit?usp=sharing
Isn't that font just Sonic 2's in 3D? I'm sure it's use in Generations isn't a coincidence. Very good finds btw! It's strange that another game with Metal Sonic was so many years away due to its cancellation (Heroes).
