I took a peek at this thread last night and figured I'd throw my hat into the ring.
I think why so many people prefer 16:9 for their sonic games is because it adds an additional reaction buffer for when you're moving at higher speeds. If memory serves me right, a big complaint people have with the 2d classic sonic games is that the player can't reasonably react to obstacles when going fast. I do want to address the potential-counter of "sonic isn't just about speed, it's about memorizing the level design through playing it multiple times, thereby slowly mastering the level". I do think that's a fair point to make. You can't expect to be immediately good at a game when you're playing it for the first time. Naturally, you'll bump into stuff less once you're familiar with the level design.
That being said, offering widescreen does make the game more approachable and immediately accessible from a gameplay standpoint, which is partly why the retro engine remakes have become the sorta "first choice" versions of those particular games. If the decision to stay 4:3 is set in stone, that is still your decision at the end of the day. That being said, I do hope that yall could remedy the root of the issue in the form of some kind of extend camera feature. I think sonic generations did something similar to that too. Just a little something to make reacting a bit easier.

An extended camera is planned for the game, and if you are in the camp that doesn't like it at all, its an option that can be toggled off. I'm usually not a fan of extended cam and could care less in 90% of situations where its added but for the pace and speeds you get in this game, it is a must have.

Reposting some media from the discord server for those who bother to only look at the retro thread

    Context for the video above:

"I'd also like to note that 70% percent of this menu was made by drawing polygons in code, the rest are sprites"

"(menu buttons are a temp asset based on the 2017 menu and are planned to be altered to appear more readable)"

I coded this menu and it's primarily made out of polygons instead of sprites, quite proud of that.

Also chopp you should fix first image not working, i assume you copied a discord link.

Yes there is! But i am not sure if posting invite links is against the forum's rules...

I checked the rules and there's nothing that says you can't link a Discord server invite.

Well in that case. Here's the invite to Ultra Ring Community Discord. The server is not exclusive to XG only but also to other projects that we are doing.
