what i mean by my quastion is more like level design and new bosses. i dont want to fight bosses ive already fought elsewhere. it sounds like new level layouts and new bosses if im reading your words corectly. also even if 4x3 you should still suppourt 16x9 monitoros by haveing a self boardering mode, so i do not have to manualy change my monitor to 4x3 mode which is a hastle
We are having new level design and bosses, and there are plans to add image borders for 16:9 monitors with ability to make your own too if people wish to do that. But default is going to be black borders What does this even mean??
I mean that Sonic Omens' integrity as a game was brought into question when the development team behind it backed it by Patreon.
I’ve seen people say that some shmups and beat em ups are better in 4:3 due to there being a more manageable amount of enemies on screen. I personally enjoy 2D Sonic in 16:9 as it gives me more room to see enemies. That said this is a fan/passion project worked on in folks’ spare time, so the team can do what they please. But the team should also understand that this may be an unpopular decision and increase the pressure to have stellar level design (to avoid the criticism of screen crunch).
I don't like widescreen, because I can't see everything at once. Give me the standard aspect ratio, kthx.
Not every shmup is vertically-oriented. There are plenty of horizontally-oriented shmups as well. Playing those in tate mode would be a terrible idea. When it comes to vertically-oriented shmups, there are barely any that are 9:16. Most are 3:4.
I still don't see how this is relevant. To my knowledge, the team is not asking for donations to aid in development. Your point is too unclear. Also, we should probably stop talking about shmups and aspect ratios. There is no "better" aspect ratio for video games as that's a subjective element that can differ from game to game and person to person. I've also seen Sonic fangames in the past with a toggle that allows you to change from 16:9 to 4:3 and vice versa. I don't think it's really worth talking about.
They say 1.85:1 is the perfect aspect ratio for seeing everything at once, because it's the aspect ratio of the human eye!
All pedantry and unrelated game discussion aside, I'm gonna humbly request that the option for both 4:3 and 16:9 is considered. It's the simplest way to please everyone and it puts it toe to toe with what's available officially for the classic games. I recall Triple Trouble 16-Bit was gung-ho on solely offering 4:3 as well initially, but now it has both and everyone's happy, especially because you can play it's port on a whole swath of systems with all manner of different screens, and it looks great.
It was Joe making GoFundMe to get new software for XG dev but im pretty sure that was taken down very quickly. At that point Euan was just doing his IRL stuff, basically after Retro Sonic XG Euan had no involvement with XG anymore. We are not adding 16:9 toggle, We are designing this game for 4:3 and we feel like if we add toggle for 16:9 it will ruin level design and some other things like bosses for sure. I have no idea why Noah did that for Triple Trouble 16-bit considering the fact majority of the game was designed for 4:3, basically, 16:9 is just additional work to optimize everything and i feel like its not worth it at all
Thank you for the correction. my memory is fuzzy on that. You guys do you but claiming that adding 16:9 toggle will ruin level design is not only ridiculous but also plain wrong. We don't need to go far for an example, just look at Sonic 3 AIR/Origins. Classic games were nothing but improved with this change. You may have a bit of a point with bosses, but they can just be designed with 16:9 in mind to begin with. Again it's your decision but you are alienating a big (I dare even say majority) audience by catering to 4:3 purists.
I think it's a stretch to say elements of the classic games (and TT16B) were ruined by having 16:9 jammed into them after the fact. Of course they were designed around 4:3, but it's not a bad thing to give players more options that would make them happy. There's not some sacred dialogue that's being besmirched or something; the Retro Engine remasters changed the boss behavior a little to accommodate the extra screen space and anyone who cared that much just stuck to the originals like they would have anyway, but everyone else moved past it and generally had a great time with them. Anyway, it's your project and I'm ready to play it in whatever aspect ratio, there's plenty of mods and fan games (and Chaotix lol) that will never be updated for anything but 4:3 and I still play those just fine. I just think it's worth giving some further consideration while things are still malleable.
You've made some good points, but this isn't one of them. How are some borders alienating a majority of the audience? That's ludicrous!
OK, I concede that came off a little bit sensational. Obviously I use my personal experience as anecdotal evidence, but once I played AIR I couldn't go back to original Sonic 3 on Genesis. it is just that much better to play (for me)
It's their game, they can do whatever they want. This whole widescreen purism is ridiculous in general. If it really is somehow objectively better than 4:3, all screens of all devices would've been 16:9 since the first one was invented. And this is more of a personal thing, but I don't think that aspect ratio has ever affected my performance or capabilities in any Classic Sonic game.
