I can't wait until Sonic's "rough transition into 2D" is done.

Look, my guys, I didn't buy Super Mario Odyssey because I don't like its logo, so I will certainly not buy this for the sole reason of it being wrongly bundled. Why no Frontiers DLC? Everybody and their mother knows Sonic Generations, if they haven't played it already, it's because they don't want to. So why shove it down their throats?

I want to play it, the new levels look great, but I got like 20 things to complain about already. The animations, the game it was bundled with, the pre-order bonuses... Would have preferred something akin to the bonus content of SA2B HD (e.g., interviews with Shadow's voice actors)

I'm not sure if this makes sense, but I have reasoning to believe it won't be purely 2D for Act 2 outside of the Metadata reasoning.

Notice how across the Boost-Games, when a Badnik is in 2D Section they're always directly in front of Shadow. There's no room for confusion nor mixup, the Badnik will always stand in front of you

However this GUN Robot in the bottom right - from a section that isn't in Act 1 - ISN'T directly in front of Shadow, it's standing further towards the left than directly centered.

Perhaps I'm wrong, so I brought this as well

When in 2D Within Gens, this said GUN Robot is always standing on the same plane. It's directly in front of Classic Sonic. Perhaps that's just to the angle and Shadow's pose however.

    ...

I also noticed this area had a lot more depth than the average 2D Section. They usually just stick to what you need and a little extra for 2.5D

It could be a City Escape 2.5D situation where it has more depth however, due to the environment it needed to be full of depth. But the ARK is a floating colony, that kind of depth isn't needed compared to avoiding say...a floating San Francisco

For all I know, I'm crazy and wrong. But it stood out to me and I'd like to know if I'm onto something or I'm a nutjob :)

Eh, looks to me that the robot is directly in front of Shadow, you can track them even with the perspective by using the floor pattern, just need to keep in mind that the robot is much larger and with a wider stance.

It's amusing to see the main selling point of Sonic Superstars be the "classic physics", only to see the craptacular ones of Generations make it through to this remake. Granted it might have been hard to expect them to re-write half (or a third) of the game, but it's a weird message to send: physics are important, except for when they aren't.

Yeah totally get that, the Metadata is a stronger argument but I was gonna be bothered to hell by this if I didn't ask. Depth Perception, my greatest enemy

Generations is designed with those weird physics in mind, and as far as I see it any attempt to fix them with mods just made the game overrall worse to play because of it

This. As much as I 'vastly' prefer Classic physics, Generations is a different game that operates on different mechanics, and they weren't S4E1 level bad or anything, so I'm not going to fuss if the game plays largely the same as the one I already knew.

I just want the new content to play more like the Generations we knew, and less like Frontiers cyber stages or Forces. That's my main ask.

I thought the main selling points of Superstars were the 4 player co-op and Emerald powers, neither of which had well execution.

Eh. Is it really? We know they consciously moved away from the general ideas for which those physics were important. They must see it as a global gimmick all on its own, but not a core concept of the series. Gens Classic Sonic was well received on its own at the time, despite the stuff it doesn't do very well. So "physics are important, except for when they aren't" seems to be exactly the message they want.

The press release for the game contains a 4K version of the trailer with all the metadata intact. From there it's pretty straightforward to get the metadata. You can simply open the video as a text file and get it, for example.

Yeah I have a feeling Iizuka misinterpreted that question given the stuff we already have and the fact that the interviewer said Acts in specific reference to generations where classic is 2D and modern is mostly 3D with some 2D. I could be wrong though, maybe this game will launch and it'll end up being 70% 2D like colors or something.

Space Colony Ark Act 1 remixes into Radical Highway half way through, but will this be the case for each stage? My hope is they use the Act 1/2 system to bridge certain other similar stages and themes together. Since Act 1 takes from The ARK's music, and therefor Final Rush, I hope that Act 2 instead uses Final Chase as its musical choice.

Then for Rail Canyon, I hope its other act references Sky Rail from Adventure 2.

Would actually love the idea of Stage-Mixing, taking areas from different games / zones and fusing them into an Act / Zone

I don't think we'll be seeing that same level of cinematography and change within every zone. The transition to Radical Highway is probably a one-off set piece for Ark level. Other levels could have different types of set pieces, like the waterfalls in Kingdom Valley or some sort of crazy train chase in Rail Canyon.

I got the impression that the "Warp" to the bizzarro Radical Highway was a small mini-boss fight against Doom's Eye. This one seemed to be introductory given how simple it was, so maybe there'll be more of them with increasing difficulty and complexity.

For what it's worth, that secton is referred to as "30_RadicalHighwayAct1_PlayThrough.mp4" in the trailer metadata.

We can assume that they're treating this wrap sections as their own "acts" internally, and that there will more Radical Highway warping in later stages.

I mean they were never going to change the physics of Generations for this remaster.... For one thing, the levels were not designed in a way that the Classic Sonic physics would honestly make that much of a difference. It would take a complete redesign of the game, something completely out of scope with this most likely low budget stop-gap project (at least, in comparison to something like Frontiers)...

Also, considering that Superstars underperformed, we may unfortunately see SEGA extrapolate the rather unfortunate opinion that the Classic physics are not what people actually care about when purchasing a game... Even though there were lots of things that shot Superstars in the foot in terms of commercial viability (like coming out the same week as Mario Wonder, also, the boss fights being a very big complaint against the game).

I'm starting to see Sonic Dream Team inspiration in the level design.
