  1. I didn't think NiGHTS was a good game myself.

My guess for Shadow Generations is two acts of 3 levels each with two separate parts representing two levels (Like level 1 being Ark with Radical highway), Doom's Eye as a miniboss, Biolizard, and Black Doom as the final boss. Two hours of gameplay that Retro members could beat in an hour.

I'm not going to pay full price for what could end up being just 1-2 new hours of content

Honestly I'm just excited to finally get a physical edition of Generations since I didn't own a 360 or PS3.

Going by the Steam pricetag it's 50 dollars. That isn't what I'd call full price anymore, though I agree it's higher than I'd like.

As fun as it would be to buy another copy of Generations and show it off next to my 360 and 3DS cases like Colors Ultimate, the digtal/pre-order bonuses are too interesting to me to do it. Plus I've somewhat tricked myself into believing the rumors of a new Playstation portable device that plays PS4 games are true and think I'd really like to future proof for that if it actually comes along.

...Looks kind of weird? I mean they're obviously doing Sonic Jam, but I dunno, something looks off about this one. Maybe it's the modern rendering messing me up?

EDIT: it's definitely the way the lighting reflects off the individual polygons. Makes him look like a papercraft or something. The seam going right down the center of the head is weird, too.

I hate how they always look like that papercraft look.

Although I do like how FFVII: Rebirth pulled it off

  9. The eyes and muzzle have more polygons added to give depth to what used to just be texture work, looks way too smooth compared to rest of the model. The textures and pose seem to be based off Fighters:

Part of me feels like when they do these throwback skins they intentionally make them look crappier to really ramp up the "So Retro!!" factor even though in reality they never looked like that at all lol

but nitpicking aside, I love the Sonic Jam model so I'm glad to see it back :P

  11. Hmm... The model seems to be based on the model used in Jam's credits renders and SA1's Tornado segments. Neat.

They look like crap because they're low-poly models on significantly improved rendering hardware.

They could make it exactly like how it ran on the Saturn/PS1/N64, but it would look even more jarring.

Edit: I wish they used the Sonic R model so he can have popsicle hands

  13. I dunno, this mod for Crash 4 does what you described. This doesn't look that jarring to me.

I think it's meant to have the opposite effect where you're supposed to think "wow how ugly! good thing graphics are so much better now!" even when the graphics really aren't that much better. I guess it's a bit of an unfair example with how magically gorgeous the PS1 Crash games are but yeah I do find it a tad disrespectful.

    We lost, Fighters bros…

Joking aside, I don’t think anyone’s surprised by this, I just hope this isn’t the extent of skins in the game. Frontiers’ offerings on this front ended up being pretty underwhelming so I hope they’re more ambitious this time around.

I'm disappointed. I would rather have seen the Rabbit skin come back. I mean, with how far away the camera can be in the Classic stages, would you really be able to tell much of a difference?

The way the rendering is done makes it seem like the polygons are smoothened out and rounded off, which adds to the papercraft feel.

Like for example, the head's polygon shapes are pretty much unchanged. However, because of the rendering, it shows individual polygons lit differently, creating all this separation.

Why is that? Well I think it's just because the intent is different. Back in the day they were trying to make these low poly models look as smooth and seamless as possible on low resolution TVs. Nowadays they want to highlight how low poly they are for the "nostalgia" and the contrast.

Although it's still possible that the model is rendered differently in game, we shall see.

Also, they removed Sonic's eyebrow textures from the model. All the better for it, would've looked very weird in 4K (CRT was meant to make it blend with the rest of face).

Any low poly Sonic is a low poly friend of mine! Still prefer the Fighters model but the "Jam Legacy" skin is really cute! Didn't think they'd top the SA1 Skin.
