The fact that the only release date for the Switch 2 edition is just "Soon" leads me to believe it's still in development and they just don't expect it to take long since all the actual game content is already done, I don't think it was developed at the same time as the other versions. But what do I know.

@shilz There's no way for us to know for sure, but I'm with Kilo on this one. I would guess that SXSG would be an NS2 launch title/upgrade or would at least have a release date if SEGA has been sitting on it for a while. It's probably just a low priority, straightforward porting job.

They could stand to give Shadow another skin with it at least. Maybe just a texture swap to the Shadow Androids, since they got no representation in the game and it's real easy.

I feel the skin functionality in both Sonic X Shadow Generations and Sonic Superstars has been pretty underutilised to be honest, to the point where I'm not exactly certain why they even bothered. Superstars did at least add a couple of extras aside from the launch/pre-order bonus ones, but then petered out after that; Generations seems to have stopped completely after the initial batch.

It's a shame, as I'd hoped to see more 'classic' skins added to both sides of the package - skins for both Sonic Generations and Shadow Generations from Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes and Sonic the Hedgehog '06 would have made a nice addition to the package, allowing fans the chance to play the remixed stages from those gameswith an era-appropriate version of the character. And Superstars could have at least let you unlock skins of the Metal versions of the characters, especially as they're all already modelled/animated and everything for the Battle Mode. Heck, even having a skin for Trip with her helmet still on would have been something.

Come to think of it - I never played it, but didn't Frontiers have this issue too? I think they did the SOAP shoes, a Monster Hunter collab outfit, and a Korone-inspired shoe/glove retexture... Was there ever actually anything else?

If they're going to add skin functionality to a future game, I'd love for them to go all-in like Crash Bandicoot 4 or similar. Have a whole bunch in there from the start as unlockables, then make a few new ones to go with any DLC that's released after the game is done.

I've been saying it for years, before Frontiers ever even came out -- costumes and costume pieces should be the ultimate panacea for Sonic extra content. Not that they should skimp on other stuff -- but when levels, or overworlds like Frontiers -- feel a little too samey or empty (think of how many different items in SA2 stages got replaced by generic 10-ring pickups when they became cyberspace levels in Frontiers), and the developers aren't interested in bringing back invincibility, speed shoes, shields or other powerups, throwing in a costume piece that gives Sonic a funny little hat or some alternate gloves or some such would massively improve the time players spend on the game, completely optionally. And they already have an entire game full of cosmetic stuff purpose-built for Sonic character proportions! Sometimes even including Sonic and friends' own gear from across the franchise. It's a little tiny dopamine hit for exploration and going out of the way, and it's more unique than a generic ring pickup, but the devs can still do whatever they want with the core gameplay.

There was also the Birthday party hat and shades, christmas outfit, the boots and gloves from the preorder bonus (ugly), and if you 100% the game, you get the "Frontier elite" crown.

I'll still never really understand the gamer's obsession with skins and character customisation, especially in single player games with a canon/true design. A solid majority of the time, the default appearances were better than the alternatives. And I'd much rather things looked "correct" than spend my time faffing around with custom choices.
But it is what it is. Skins are not only enjoyed by most, but they actually seem to greatly enhance the shelf-life of games for most people.

SEGA have done basically the bare minimum them in Sonic games (Hardlight titles notwithstanding) and it beggars belief. The amount of effort involved in making skins is miniscule compared to the potential gains they offer. Colours Ultimate is so far the only game to actually include customisable skins for the main character. Frontiers and SXSG both have a pathetic selection of presets that get overriden in pre-rendered cutscenes and Super transformations, and you have to edit out of the game to the title screens to even switch skins. Superstars at least lets to change skins any time you like.

They could do so much better and it wouldn't take much work at all.

Stupidstars seems like a giant missed opportunity for additional character content. They really should have drip fed us a bunch of characters coming back in playable form mashed into one big game.

That's quite literally what I was expecting after first hearing its name.

I do mostly agree with this to be clear, I think that it just being there as a thing you can get does a lot on it's own. It's a psychological thing. I'm just thinking, for example, there's only one Sonic Forces Gamer Hat in any of the open zones, and if you find it on your own, that's a unique little story of discovery you just made. It's not much, but compared to yet another memory token, it being a permanent, one-of-a-kind thing that you put in some amount of effort to find means it's a direct sign of your actions as a player, and it has a clear, obvious effect on the character when you put it on, even if you don't keep it on because it looks stupid.

The lackluster implementation is unfortunately a result of their discovery being synonymous with their becoming DLC/preorder fodder, I fear. We had one game all about them, and then they realized they could scalp them to us, so no more diegetic implementation. Go eat at fucking IHOP, you worms.

The Sega Asia website says the following:
    • The Nintendo Switch™ version cannot be upgraded to the Nintendo Switch™ 2 version. (The same applies to DLC.)
    https://asia.sega.com/SonicXShadowGenerations/en/news/20250424.html

This is money grubby… they could at least have an upgrade purchase option (although even that’s a bit grubby because they’ve made a good chunk of change from this game). But to require existing owners to buy the whole game again is poor form.

Come the fuck on SEGA this was an open goal.

Even though this doesn’t affect me, it’s pretty much killed my enthusiasm to double dip. Hope they backtrack on it.

Game Key Card for the physical = no purchase from me - a shame, since this was one of the few games I already own that I would've been tempted to double-dip for (or, more precisely, sell my original to part-fund the new version), given that it should be a significant upgrade from the current Switch version in terms of resolution and frame rate. But with this news, it looks like I'll be sticking with my OG copy - at least that has the games on the actual cart...!

Nintendo have several games where you get a free upgrade from the Switch 1 version. And for games where you have to pay for new features, there are either new modes or new levels. But even then, you pay for the upgrade. You don’t have to buy the whole game again.

SxSG only seems to be a graphical update. So far, no new modes/features have been revealed.
It's just ridiculous that Sega isn't following Nintendo and instead expecting Switch 1 owners to buy the whole game for prettier graphics.

  14. SEGA doing what Nintendon’t and making their upgrade fee seem reasonable as opposed to not having an option at all. Kinda hints at why they oddly haven’t confirmed a Switch 2 version of Crossworlds.

I was looking forward to eventually playing Shadow Gens on Switch 2 so this is a bit disappointing to see. They were kind enough to give out a free PS5 upgrade for Frontiers so what gives here

Game key cards are bad enough, and not offering even a paid upgrade route is the greediest shit. I'm genuinely surprised, because for PS4 to PS5 upgrades have been handled so will by SEGA.

lol fuck this I'm not paying for another copy of SXSG that's inferior to the PS5 version. I have SXSG on Switch and PS5 already.

I already wasn't interested in buying the game because there wasn't an upgrade path for original Gens owners on PC/Xbox. This is just plain silly. Not to mention the game could easily fit on a 32GB card.

That's one way to burn up any good will Sega earned! Yeah, I ain't getting it unless it's on sale. And even then, I'd rather not reward them for shitty behavior like this.

Game isn't even a year old and they're expecting a full cost upgrade? Nah, I'm good.

    They are growing arrogant.

Is there no mention of the game running at 60fps for switch 2? Either I'm blind or my eyes are tired as fuck to look around properly
