nice, I was really hoping this would happen. I was kind of underwhelmed with Shadow Gens' visuals on Switch but I held off on getting the game on PS5 in the hopes they'd do an upgrade for Switch 2.

  2. Seems like its gonna be a Switch 2 Edition which is good because as much as I loved the game I am not double dipping. I'll gladly pay the $10-20 to get the upgrades so Shadow Gens stops looking like someone smeared vaseline on the screen

Trailer for the Switch 2 edition is out. doesn't look like there's any new content, just upscaling to be on par with the other platforms. Has a new song which sounds like a Sonic Forces version of I Am All of Me, not a compliment.

You just barely beat me to the punch on this! That said, I was gonna post the YouTube version, as I just got a notification for it a moment ago.

Also, that song seems to be the title screen music track for the game re-used for this trailer, sounds identical to the in-game version to me, aside from volume shifting to accommodate the speech and sound effects in the trailer.

Ah never hanged around on the title screen that long to hear it that far.

Would be nice if you can upgrade the OG Switch version instead of having to buy a whole new copy lmao

You’ll be able to. I’m pretty confident of that at least, I don’t think Nintendo would allow publishers to cut their own detail given the pattern they’ve established, and I don’t think SEGA would want to jeopardise their relationship by trying.

If it's like the PS5 with PS4 games, which I'm assuming is what they're going for with their upgrade program, then you will be able to download the Switch 2 version if you have the Switch version and also if you have the physical card inside the system (with the need to keep it inserted for license purposes)

I got the PS4 version of Frontiers and was able to upgrade to the PS5 version for free so I'm hoping this Switch 2 upgrade will be free too.

All up to Nintendo’s policy. They didn’t say anything in the direct which has me worried, but maybe we’ll see some sort of soft confirmation along the lines of “Select 3rd Party Titles are eligible for free/paid upgrades.”

So the pattern so far seems to be that branded "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition"s have performance enhancements and some new content, with the price tag for this format being between $10-$20 depending on the complexity of said content. Otherwise, standalone performance enhancements are to be delivered as free updates for certain games (for example, Super Mario Bros. Wonder). I would like to think SEGA will follow suit with this and we're getting a SXSG Switch 2 Edition with some additional bells and whistles (it may be the case that they just bundle in all DLC with it, including the Adventure and Jam legacy skins) but I admit it's not a given at this point.

In an ideal world, that's what SEGA would do here. SXSG will probably be around a year old by the time it launches on Switch 2, so "early" adopters on other platforms won't be missing out by that point. But yeah, like you say nothing is actually a given set this point. SEGA have been cool about providing generational upgrades for other Sonic games on PS4 to PS5, so there's reason enough to hope that they'll follow suit here. I don't think we'll be seeing any new content though.

It's cool that this port exists. I'm guessing it's going to be more or less on par with the PS4/XB1 versions on a base level, right? And on top of that it'll have the NS2's built in DLSS capabilities etc. We don't know exactly how powerful the NS2 is yet. I have SXSG on both Switch and PS5 already, and even though I plan to get an NS2 eventually I don't think I'll buy another copy of this game. The PS5 version plays like a dream, but on Switch the performance is just so much worse. It's not a nice game to play at 30fps.

Wonder if SEGA will ever release an NS2 version of Frontiers or at least offer an upgrade for it...

I got the game on Switch for my sister...kind of, as part of the LRG edition, and I got it for myself on Steam, but would be happy to triple dip and have my own copy on Switch 2 to be able to play both games in 60 FPS on the go. It's such a shame that the Switch version of Sonic Generations got locked to 30 seemingly on account of wanting to be in parity with Shadow's performance.

They might be able to get away with a spit-shine and performance increase for Shadow Generations, but a Switch 2 Frontiers I'd want to see accompanied by an actual update. Smooth out the remaining jank in Final Horizon (mostly the delay on some characters' actions), rebalance the FH guardians and character damage, fix the acceleration slider, Fucking Let Me Turn In Cyberspace™ (and midair), add the QTE for Supreme The End by default (did you know it had one? I didn't, because you have to die and repeat both phases multiple times to see it), and then...I dunno, maybe let you unlock the other characters outside FH in New Game+?

Although I agree and would like to see this stuff, I don't think it's likely at all. Frontiers will be celebrating its third birthday by the end of this year, and we're well and truly past any kind of updates to it as a game. I just think it's not entirely impossible that SEGA might consider an NS2 version of it that's otherwise identical to all other platforms. There's definitely no way they'd bother to update all of the other versions either.

But yeah, the acceleration slider for Tails, Knuckles and Amy is my biggest gripe with the game at this stage. Not that it's the biggest issue by a long shot, just that it's inconsistent because it doesn't affect Sonic and the acceleration slider wasn't even a part of the game originally. It ruins the experience of playing as the extra characters. How did they manage to miss something so blindingly obvious when they patched other things in TFH?

If they put out a NS2 update for Frontiers at all, I only really expect a bump to the framerate + resolution and maybe an increase in fidelity to put it closer to the PC version at low settings. That game is too old for anything beyond that

  19. Switch 2 is in ballpark performance of a PS4, but with a more modern GPU. If Sega updates Sonic Frontiers for Switch 2 I expect it to be on par with the PS4 (Pro maybe) version and maybe PS5 version if they use DLSS.

I expect them to have moved on from every other Sonic release at this point. Shadow Generations for Switch 2 was probably developed alongside the other versions and just never revealed.
