He is noticeably much more critical of this game than others, mainly that level design is mostly reaction based set pieces back to back rather what pre boost eras level design was.
Most strange, no comment on the music? The story?
I don't think this is because he dislikes the game or thinks less of it, more so that he thinks Sonic team finally has what it takes to make something exceptional.

Funny enough, i only watched first minutes -can't have time to watch hours long vids, his previous video took me a long while- and noticed he was way less critical of the new Generations remaster than other people

This guy somehow enjoys actual dogshit (cyberspace in Frontiers), so I am also a little surprised by some of his criticisms. Many are totally valid though - especially his Radical Highway complaints.

I'll be honest, I think this went pretty well. This is probably the most popular critical review I've seen for this game that wasn't outright positive from start to end. Yet, it still ends with saying he liked it and he's glad it appealed to so many in the fandom.

Hell, even him in the comments is still positive.

So if the most popular yet critical review for this game so far is still ultimately positive. I think that's a good game. There's that one Mario Odyssey Video about it not being a Masterpiece but that doesn't really seem to bother discussion so if anything this is like that but way better in terms of reception from the Youtuber who posted.

I don't agree with everything he said, but his critics were totally valid. it was a good review.

I really like his reviews because the negativity in them doesn't have that smug and above-it-all character to it that a lot of reviews these days have. It's so unfun for me to listen to someone basically telling me how much smarter they are than the writers/dev team/creators. (Bonus points if at some point it transitions into strange assumptions about the creators' character, misinformation or insults.)

I think I also disagree with the speed complaint the most.

I saw one streamer that just could not stop being sarcastic about how the boost barely did anything (in fact a lot about the game got some sort of snippy comment about it and it got really unfun to watch eventually, I just can't stand that kind of stuff anymore because it's just shallow, boring misery) and I just don't see it.

I think it is slower, but not by that much and add to that the general slower movement speed is augmented by the shortcuts/nimble moves you can pull off. The total speed comes from the boost and the optimised movement working together and adds up to about the same in my eyes.

I think it achieves its speed by different means, but would I call it slow? No.

In comparison to Unleashed/Gens? (Which is what I read the complaint mostly as in the review.) Yes.

But I also value the control above speed here. I think they probably could increase it a bit without sacrificing too much control? But it's not a key criticism to me.

Would love to see an Air Boost fix, though. It does feel strange it slows you down (which I did not notice at all at first, same for the action lock).

Same for a skip button for cutscenes, more reason to fully explore the level and the return of more substantial capsule mechanics (how about another go at actually substantial Elemental Shield mechanics in 3D) that augment this new Adventure/Boost gameplay hybrid.

I didn't like how there was no way to jump or boost in the air without losing speed anymore, but beyond that it felt fast enough to me.

this I do remember being a thing in Frontiers' Cyber Space levels. while most of them are comically easy to S-rank, 1-2 was one where I really, really had to learn the movement mechanics to get that rank - and I had found that I was actively slower any time I was in the air, so I endeavored to jump as little as possible.

I've enjoyed all of his reviews so far even when I don't necessarily agree with them, but was pleasantly surprised to find myself nodding along to all of his critiques. Ironically with the largely positive conclusion he comes to by the end I think we were bothered by the same things, but they just bogged the experience down a lot more for me than they did for him. Glad he was still able to enjoy the game overall!

The criticism of the lack of speed really resonated with me - the game feels agonizingly slow and stiff, and while it's nice to be able to turn Shadow around in a circle that doesn't have the diameter of a small country I don't think it justified nerfing the speed so hard. He still doesn't feel as good as Sonic did in SA1, or as satisfying to "pilot" as Sonic did in Unleashed and Generations. I really hope the next game is significantly different but I'm not holding my breath.

The one thing I really can't vibe with in that review is the love for "spear gliding" or other tech that's focused on letting you skip as much of a level as possible. That's precisely why I also don't like rail jumping and the broken-ass spindash in Frontiers. I just wanna play the actual game.

I disagreed with the points about the game's speed, I actually think the slower pace is to the benefit of the game as it lets it focus more on pure movement as opposed to more reaction based gameplay, but I do agree with the points about the air drag. It absolutely kills the pacing and it would've served the game well to reduce it to make it feel more like Colors or SA1, I love spear gliding for that reason because it allows me to incorporate aerial mobility into my level playthroughs, as opposed to avoiding it at all costs like you do in the base game.

Playing the actual game gets in the way of speedrunning it as fast as possible for some sick twitch/youtube content. :V

I've seen many people complaning about the medails lately on my timeline, and that makes me happy the decision Shadow Generations have made with the level design.

Don't expect more than a quick port across of the PS5 version's textures, etc. It's a simple enough job to do for them and they already have the assets, no real reason not to given all the work's largely done and might sell to some Nintendo owners who didn't buy outside the Switch version.

Given the existing Switch version's dynamic resolution and (I think) uncapped framerate, even that will get a bump in performance from being on Switch 2 and having the power to hit its targets at all time. I think Overlord's correct though, we'll be getting a very simple update to just bring things more in line with PS5 performance. Better visual quality, 1080p in handheld and up to 4k in docked and then at minimum a consistent 60 FPS in both games. For existing owners, I imagine this'll be between free and a tenner, though that it's been announced as its own thing pushes me towards the latter. Unless they've fixed the screen burn-in issue in Sonic Generations' timer that seems to only affect me, I could see myself double dipping on a Switch 2 version and that being my preferred way to play the whole package (though modded Sonic Gens classic may still win out)

    creating the biggest sonic collection
I bought the collectors edition through limited run games. The game arrived at last fall, but I'm still waiting on all the physical stuff. Would just be funny if the Switch 2 version of the game came out before the Collector's edition of the original game.

Christ, I'd more or less forgotten I'd order that lmao

Hopefully we get an update on it soon, I think it's mean to ship sometime in the next couple of months?
