    Superstars could've done without reusing gimmicks, but at least...new.

    Mania did the level gimmicks just fine. The problem is that I don't want to play fucking Green Hill and Chemical Plant the 7th time in a decade.

    The Green Hill and Chemical Plant problem started AFTER Sonic Mania, to be honest.

    Anyway, I don't think we really should doomposting about Classic Sonic, SEGA know he's still appealing to many people.

    Anyway yeah Shadow Gens, I wonder if SEGA plans to show any (other) teaser for Movie Shadow DLC.

    Yea fr, Superstars sold well enough and considering Sega seems keen on releasing a major new console Sonic game every year now, I highly doubt he will leave.

    Some people do count Windy Hill from Lost World as Green Hill so it could be the third then.

    This game is also full of asset reuse though... and don't even get me started on Frontiers. Hell at least when stages came back in Mania they looked and played better than they did before.

    Instead of building new assets every game, they should focus on making the game better. This has been the real pain point for a while. What matters more is how and where they use the assets. Just look at Yakuza for example.
    Straight up lifting stage designs 1:1 like frontiers did is probably the most blatant they’ve been. Nothing in Shadow Gens is easy to point at and go “yup this is reused” unless you’re specifically looking for it.

    I apologize if I'm misreading your intent here but I really don't see why they can't do both. I gave Frontiers some grace on account of it allegedly having a shoestring budget and COVID to deal with - I guess you could extend that to Shadow Gens as well but I'm also really not a fan of making excuses for SEGA in my head while I play these games. Surely next time with Frontiers' and Shadow's success they'll give the next game a good budget and proper project planning - or maybe they'll find some new novel way to justify why Sonic's memories are the plot actually and it also still doesn't play as well as Adventure did 500 years ago.

    I vividly remember a conversation with a college friend back in 2016 when he gave me the side-eye for being optimistic about 3D Sonic - "well, see, Lost World and Boom were both made by different teams! The Generations team is definitely cooking up something amazing for 2017! It's been five whole years! They've never given Sonic Team that much time!"

    He did check in when Forces came out and I said I didn't want to talk about it. :shobon:

    I don't think Mania really butchered anything. I know Superstars wasn't a masterpiece but I think the game had a really strong start, even if it kind of falls apart after the first few levels. I'd like to see them continue with smaller scale 2D games.

    This is kind of why I miss handheld devices like the GBA/DS/PSP. Mobile phone games will never really fill the gap imho

    I was being very broad with butchered, that term mostly applied to 4 and Superstars. Mania falls under gimmick and level reuse moreso. And I felt no interest going back to it because I can get the same content by playing 1-3K.

    I mean I do think Mania just reuse level chunks too especially in the Act 1s. It's especially noticeable with the levels ripped from Sonic 3&K. It's not exactly the same, but the level chunks are very noticeable if you've played these games a lot. I would've preferred level design more akin to Gens, where it's basically unrecognizable from the original if they had to reuse themes. The Act 2s do it right for the most part, but the Act 1s could be more original.

    Fucking weeks later and I still can't get What I'm Made Of out of my head, damn earworm. My dog brought his toys to me today to play and I was like "IS IT ME YOU SAID YOU'RE LOOKING FOR? LET ME SHOW WHO IM AND WHAT YOU'RE HERE FOR" lol

    You know, it occurs to me, that I got basically all the DLC in this game for free, including the early access. I bought the game from GameBillet, which had a sale that brought the Digital Deluxe version down to the same price as the normal version. That gave me the Sonic Adventure and Terios skins, plus the movie DLC later. Then I signed up for the newsletter to get the Classic Sonic Skin.

    That's pretty cool lol
